Last week, you analyzed your audience and purpose and found research to prepare your presentation for next week’s Communications Conference. You must post that presentation by Thursday midnight of Week 8. Again, look ahead to the instructions for the Week 8 presentation!
This week, participate in ONE of the following threads in preparation for the conference next week. Follow these instructions for adding images, audio, and video.
Thread 1: Social Media
As a presenter next week, you have been asked to help promote the conference on social media. Before Thursday midnight, post an initial message that does both of the following:
Provide a social media message appropriate for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, or other social media platform. The message should encourage participation in next week’s communications conference, specifically your presentation at that conference. Be creative!
Discuss the strategies you used in your social media message by answering the following questions:
Which social media platform would your posting be most appropriate for (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) and why did you choose that platform for advertising the conference?
What 2-3 specific strategies discussed in the Week 7 lesson did you use in your posting and why? How has a real business used these strategies in one of its social media messages? Share the social media message and discuss how it used those same 2-3 strategies! Thread 2: Podcasts
As a presenter next week, you have been asked to help promote the conference through the podcast series on your company’s website. Before Thursday midnight, post a 2–6-minute podcast about the topic of your Week 8 presentation.
To be courteous to all, including those who may be unable to hear the podcast, the recording must use captions OR a text transcript must be included. (The average speaking time is 100-150 words per minute, so the transcript of a 2–6-minute podcast would be 200-900 words.) For a concise and clear recording, preparing a transcript in advance helps!
Use this podcast as a “rough draft” or overview of the presentation you will create for next week, since that presentation also requires audio.
Thread 3: Blogs
Review the APU Edge blogs specific to Careers and Business. Before Thursday midnight, write a blog posting about the topic of your Week 8 presentation. This posting should be appropriate for publication on APU Edge! (Here is an example: How to Emphasize the Positive in Business Writing.) Use this blog as a “rough draft” or overview of the presentation you will create for next week. You can even submit your blog for publication to APU Edge, which would be something to add to your résumé!
Thread 4: Visual Aids
The Week 8 presentation requires an original visual aid created by you. This visual might be a pie chart, bar chart, line chart, infographic, flowchart, etc. Before Thursday midnight, post an initial message that does both of the following:
Provide the visual that you created.
Discuss the development of your visual by answering the following questions:
What source(s), if any, did you use to collect information to be presented in the visual? Why is this information necessary to support the ideas of your presentation? (Cite the visual as explained in Documenting Visuals in the Week 7 lesson.)
Why does the information need to be presented in a visual form? (For instance, why not just present the idea in text?)
Why is the type of visual you used appropriate for the content? (For instance, why did you choose a bar chart and not a line chart?)
What Visual Media and Design strategies did you use in your visual? (For instance, how did you employ Gestalt Theory?) Before Sunday midnight, respond to at least two others in any of the threads by addressing two or more of the following questions relevant to each thread:
Thread 1: Social Media
Do you agree or disagree that the platform used is best for the purpose and audience of the message? What additional social media strategies might accomplish the same purpose for the audience? What additional examples from the real world demonstrate the social media strategies used? What are the pros/cons of social media advertising for professional purposes, such as this communications conference?
Thread 2: Podcasts
What section(s) of the podcast stood out to you the most and why? What ideas from the podcast should be removed or expanded upon for the Week 8 presentation? What additional ideas relevant to the podcast topic should be addressed in the Week 8 presentation?
Thread 3: Blogs
Do you think the blog should be submitted for publication? What additions or revisions, if any, would you suggest before submitting for publication? What ideas from the blog should be removed or expanded upon for the Week 8 presentation? What additional ideas relevant to the blog topic should be addressed in the Week 8 presentation?
Thread 4: Visual Aids
Is the visual really necessary or would the content be better presented textually and why? Is the type of visual used appropriate for the content or would a different type of visual be better and why? If research is used, is the visual properly cited in APA style? What design changes, if any, would you suggest?
Finally, rate those posts that really stood out to you! Give five stars to the social media messages, blogs, podcasts, or visual aids that you thought were the best.

Title: The Human Element in Scientific Inquiry: Balancing Objectivity and Emotion
Thus far, you have learned about the fundamentals of scientific inquiry, including the scientific method. An important scientific principle is that in order to uncover truths about the natural world, scientific inquiry should be free from biases, emotions, and value judgments. This includes methods, results, theories, and scientists themselves. But there is always a human element in science that can affect objectivity. Reflect on what you learned from the module resources and respond to the following prompts. You will use your news story when participating in the discussion. Create one initial post and follow up with at least two response posts.
For your initial post, address the following:
Can scientists ever be completely objective when conducting research? Why or why not? Support your argument with course resources. What might be the consequences (positive and/or negative) of emotion in scientific research? -

Title: Demographics and Leadership in the NYPD: Addressing Community Issues
Discuss the demographics of the NYPD police department (Although you do not have to use where you live because the data may not be available, you are required to use a real police department/area, not a hypothetical area. Choose a city or county that can be researched and show your sources).
Discuss the characteristics of the population in which the department serves.
Identify and discuss a specific problem that is faced by the community (e.g., high rate of property crime, high rate of gang violence)
Discuss the key features of two prominent leadership styles discussed in the lecture and readings.
Of those two styles, recommend which style should be instituted within the department.
Include a justification (backed by scholarly works) regarding why this is the preferred leadership style.
Provide a discussion on how the leadership style implemented can effectively address the problem that you have identified. -

Crisis Intervention in the Aftermath of the 2010 Haiti Earthquake: A Personal Experience
You will discuss the crisis intervention continuum and where on the continuum they ended up when working through your crisis. Refer to the assignment expectations for further detail.
You are expected to craft a well-organized crisis intervention scenario in which either you were involved or had personal and intimate knowledge of what occurred and how it was handled. There will be a total of 4 assignments surrounding the scenario, which will culminate in a crisis intervention plan as well as lessons learned from the crisis you experienced. Please note that the crisis chosen need not be a ‘life-altering’ crisis per se. If you have not been involved or do not feel you have had personal and intimate knowledge of a crisis intervention scenario, you can consult with the instructor. It may be possible, in this case, that you, with approval of the instructor, can synthesize your own hypothetical scenario based on research and/or consultation with peers outside of class. However, personal experiences are preferred.
I woud like the crisis to be about the Earthquake that happened in Haiti in 2010.. -

“Analyzing Total Rewards and Compensation Strategies of a Fortune 500 Company: A Case Study Approach” “My Experience with First-Person Writing in APA Style”
In at least 2,000 words (total), pick a single Fortune 500 company, review job listings from the company and research their compensation and benefit plans, and then answer the following four questions…(IMPORTANT: For this assignment, the company you choose MUST have at least some job listings posted online for hiring purposes)
1. What does the company’s “total rewards” package look like? What do they offer above and beyond merely a paycheck? If you were in charge of Human Resources and Workforce Management for the company, how would you approach total rewards and compensation? Identify at least one thing you would change about the way the company is doing things now. Be sure to support your decisions with sound reasoning.
2. What, if anything, can you glean from publicly available information about the way the company ensures pay equity and pay fairness? Do they have a pay transparency policy? Do they have an affirmative action program? Do they have any other measures in place to safeguard fairness and consistency in terms pay and benefits? If you were in charge of Human Resources and Workforce Management for the company you selected, how would you approach pay equity and fairness? Identify at least one thing you would change about the way the company is doing things now. Be sure to support your decisions with sound reasoning.
3. Critique job descriptions that you find in job listings online. What information is thoroughly included? What information is missing? What information needs to be more clearly explained to potential applicants? If you were in charge of Human Resources and Workforce Management for the company you selected, how would you approach job analyses and job descriptions? Identify at least one thing you would change about the way the company is doing things now. Be sure to support your decisions with sound reasoning.
4. What, if anything, can you glean from publicly available information about the way the company strategizes employee pay? Do they appear to focus on industry benchmarks, or competitor offerings, or something else altogether? Do they advertise their job offerings as being particularly well-compensated compared with any kind of relative or objective baseline? If you were in charge of Human Resources and Workforce Management for the company you selected, how would you approach employee pay strategy? Identify at least one thing you would change about the way the company is doing things now. Be sure to support your decisions with sound reasoning.
—————
The reason why you are asked to choose a Fortune 500 company is that you are much more likely to find publicly available information for these very large companies insofar as it concerns the parameters of this assignment. Still, some big companies are a bit shy about publishing some data related to the way they do things – examples commonly include salary ranges and human resources policies and procedures. That said, do the best you can with your research. A good idea, before choosing a company for this assignment, is to take a look at some different company options and assess how much data is available for you – this will ultimately determine how easy it will be to find the answers you need to guide your work.
The 2,000 word requirement here means 2,000 words of substance. So please do not count title pages, headings, or references. Also, if you choose to copy the question text into your paper (which is fine), do not count that either. I am looking for 2,000 words of your own thoughts and responses.
Since you must write at least 2,000 words, it would be my recommendation that you aim for (roughly) 500 words per question.
Your paper should also include a minimum of eight (8) sources (two for each of the questions) – properly cited in-text and in a reference list in APA format.
Your paper should be in proper APA format with a title page (no abstract required). Please double-space and use a readable 12pt font. Contrary to popular misunderstanding, first-person writing is perfectly acceptable in APA writing style so you may use first-person perspective where applicable and appropriate.
IMPORTANT: Do not plagiarize. This assignment uses TurnItIn.com for originality verification. If you copy/paste from other sources, you may receive a zero. -

The Power of Words: An Analysis of “The Book with No Pictures” as an Innovative and Effective Modern Children’s Book
English 156: Children’s Literature
Research Paper: The Book with No Pictures
Length and Format: This essay must be a minimum of two pages typed and double spaced in 12
point, Times New Roman font. The essay also needs to have a title.
Topic: The Book With No Pictures is a funny read-aloud experience for young children that may also inspire readers to rethink the power of the written word and the nature of the children’s book itself.
The questions The Book with No Pictures implicitly asks include:
•How do children’s books work?
•Is it surprising to read a book with no pictures at all? •Why was this book able to be funny even without pictures?
Your research question: Is The Book with No Pictures an innovative and effective modern children’s book. Why or why not?
Your research paper should consist of five parts:
1.
2.
3.
Introduction: Your introduction should prepare the reader for what’s to come and follow all the conventions of a standard introduction, including an overview of the general topic, an explanation of the research question, and your response to that research question.
Review of the Literature: You must review three critical articles provided to you from The New York Times, Children’s Writer’s Guild, and The Guardian in your review of the literature. A good review of the literature provides an overview of what others have said about the topic, but in your own voice and your own words. The review of the literature prepares your reader to make sense of your own original argument.
Close Reading Analysis: The close reading analysis is the most important part of your research paper. This is your own original interpretation of the primary text, The Book with No Pictures, to make your larger point about whether The Book with No Pictures is or is not an innovative and effective modern children’s book. In literary criticism, close reading is the careful, sustained interpretation of a brief passage of a book. A close reading emphasizes the particular over the general through close attention to individual words, sentences, pictures, and fonts, and the ways in which the those words, sentences, fonts, and images unfold ideas. At this point, you should draw your analysis entirely from The Book with No Pictures, without any reference to outside sources. If this is your first time doing close reading, I recommend you read this short primer: https://writingcenter.fas.harvard.edu/pages/how- do-close-reading
English 156: Children’s Literature
Bronx Community College of the City University of New York
4.
5.
Conclusion: Your conclusion should follow all the conventions of a standard conclusion, reiterating your thesis, summarizing your main points, and making a final statement on The Book with No Pictures.
Works Cited: You must cite the four sources you are working with (The Book with No Pictures and the three critical articles from The New York Times, Children’s Writer’s Guild, and The Guardian) in proper MLA style at the end of your research paper. For a refresher on MLA style, see https:// owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/ mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_formatting_and_style_guide.html
•For books, MLA style is:
Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. City of Publication, Publisher, Publication
Date.
•For journalism, the MLA style is:
Last Name, First Name. “Title of Article.” Title of Periodical, Day Month Year.
Drafting and Submission Requirements:
✓ You must:
o compose the essay yourself, in your own words, and with a clear thesis statement. o use quotes and parenthetical citations when incorporating the words of others.
o have an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
o document your sources in MLA style.
o proofread.
o complete the assignment on time.
o submit the final draft digitally via Blackboard. -

“Exploring the Life Story of a Complex Personality: A Qualitative Analysis Using Psychological Theory” “Princess Diana: A Psychological Analysis of Her Life and Behavior”
The final paper will be written in accordance with APA guideline/style. Paper format: While the presentation is semi-formal, in terms of language and style, the paper is the formal written assignment in this course. It will include: title; abstract; the core of the paper will be an introduction (1-2 pages), method (of your qualitative research; addressing the reliability and the validity of biographical resources; 1 page), results (the life story of the person, focus only on facts; 4-5 pages), discussion (your understanding of the life story of the person, focus on interpretation and speculation according to your psychological knowledge; 3-4 pages); summary (1/2 page); reference list; appendix. The recommended length of the paper is 10 double spaced pages (not including bibliography). Maximum length is 11 pages (not including bibliography). Appendix at any length is accepted.
The presentation’s structure would be like the structure of an academic paper in psychology (see below “Final Paper”) with one difference: The presenters may leave some issues open for discussion in class, and they may share their questions with the class. Post-presentation class discussion is aimed at targeting these issues and enriching the final paper. The professor will lead the post-presentation discussion. Rubric is available on eClass. As described earlier, this project aims at integration of personality theory, personality styles and disorders in real life. Since students are not eligible to apply clinical concepts to real people, a compromise is offered: Instead of exploring the life of a “living” person, students may focus on a known person, about whom there is a lot of biographical information. Examples: Joseph Stalin, Sylvia Plath. Of more contemporary interest: Donald Trump. The person on focus does not have to demonstrate any psychopathology: Barak Obama, for example, would be a good candidate to be the focus of your study.
It is advisable to choose an interesting, multilayered, complex personality about whom there is enough reliable psychologically relevant information to be the centre of your project. Students are expected to demonstrate critical thinking about biographical data collection issues, such as contradictions among sources, issues of reliability and validity. The project will relate to a minimum of two theoretical perspectives learnt in class and at least one issue (theoretical or empirical) independently studied. These will be applied to a person on focus. For example: If you decided to work on the life story of Princess Diana, you may use two of the theories discussed in class (such as Freud’s psychoanalysis and attachment) plus independent research on a personality disorder they may have had (i.e., bulimia; impact of parental conflict on children; or any other issue that is relevant to Princess D’s life). Checklist /Rubric: Writing Skills (50%)
APA title
APA abstract
Clear language Correct grammar Correct spelling
Chapters are divided into paragraphs
Paragraphs make sense, with beginning, body, end
Many paragraphs are linked to each other
Chapters: Introduction, Method, Results, Discussion, Reference in this order
APA in-text citations and quotations
APA bibliography
Content (50%)
Abstract (half a page, not included in the pages count): a description of the essence of your study Introduction (1-2- pages): The purpose of your study; what did you do: who was your subject; shortly describe your data collection; what theoretical frameworks guided the interpretation of your data. Don’t forget references when needed. Method (1 page): Elaborate about the way the data was collected (“data” refers to the facts about the life and behaviour of your subject). Address issues of reliability, validity, strengths and weaknesses and potential biases of the various biographic resources. Here you may mention methodological literature on qualitative research methods (plus references). Results (4-5 pages): The life story and behaviour of your subject (“data”).
Focus on facts only. Whole, multi-faceted description of your subject: address all significant social roles (e.g., Princess D: daughter, sister, friend, spouse, mother, philanthropist, social activist).
Relevant details about childhood and adolescence that will enable connecting childhood and adulthood through a developmental theoretical framework (for example: temperament, attachment, Freud, Adler, Erikson, Kohut, Klein, Mahler, Rogers, Learning Theories).
Adulthood
Specify behaviours that can substantiate a potential axis 1 and/or axis 2 diagnoses.
Discussion (3-4 pages): Your understanding of the life and behaviour of your subject: demonstrate your knowledge of psychology.
Address personality styles and/or disorder as learnt from Millon’s text
If there is an axis one disorder (e.g., bulimia) use what we referred to as “Millon’s formula” to connect it to axis two and axis four (we learned these concepts in class). When PD is indicated (for example, antisocial PD for Ted Bundy), offer a tentative diagnosis, given that you are not eligible to diagnose anybody. If a personality style is indicated, your language should be tentative as well. In many cases it is useful to articulate an overarching question about your subject’s behaviour. This question may allow you to integrate a lot of information about your subject, and to increase the cohesiveness of the paper. For example: How can Princess D’s turn-away from the royal family be understood by the science of psychology? Complex, multi-faceted approach to knowledge of psychology rather than a simplistic one. Keep in mind the principle of overdetermination. Methodological considerations are integrated in the discussion when appropriate. Critical thinking Depth Engaging Demonstration of independent research (examples: papers/books about attachment beyond the well known Bowlby and Ainsworth, studies, literature reviews, research on an additional relevant issue (e.g, relevant for Princess D: Bulimia, parental marital conflicts). The quality of your resources counts. Demonstration of knowledge of personality theories and applying them to your subject
Use references to back up your knowledge. General:
Total 10 double spaced pages, not including the abstract, bibliography, and an appendix.
Appendix: Can be at any length. -

Correctional Dispositional Plan for Marquese from “Juvenile Justice”
Scenario: You are a juvenile corrections officer tasked with making recommendations to a judge for a juvenile’s entire course of treatment. You can advise on the sanctions they should receive; the components of their correctional treatment; the programs, training, or institutions that should assist them; any alternatives or special conditions to consider; and terms for their aftercare and transition back into the community.
Write a 525- to 700-word correctional dispositional plan for a juvenile.
Choose 1 of the following juveniles to use as an example case study for this week’s assignment:
Donovan from “Second Chance Kids” (see this week’s University Library Videos)
Rolon from “Second Chance Kids”
Shawn from Juvenile Justice
Jose from Juvenile Justice
Manny from Juvenile Justice
Marquese from Juvenile Justice
Gina, from the Ch. 11 Critical Thinking Exercises #3 (p. 313)
Any of the juveniles from the Week 3 court session videos
Note: If you choose an example with a known correctional plan, do not propose the same plan from the original case study. Make your own recommendations for a different process for the juvenile’s treatment.
Complete the following in your recommended plan for the juvenile:
Summarize the outcome of the adjudication process and the disposition in this case.
Describe the treatment of the juvenile in this situation.
Explain how law enforcement and the courts might have interacted differently with this person as a juvenile than if he or she had been an adult.
Explain the risk factors that need to be considered in the assessment of this juvenile.
Explain how the combination of factors considered in this case were connected and influenced the original outcome, if at all.
List any additional information you would like to have before considering other correctional treatments for the juvenile.
Recommend 2 alternative correctional strategies for this juvenile: 1 that includes a correctional program that exists in your state and 1 other potential option.
Explain how you could monitor, measure, report, and support the juvenile’s progress through treatment.
Justify your plan with evidence that supports your recommendations.
Submit your assignment. -
