“The Importance of Qualitative Research in Public Administration: Advantages and Applications” “The Advantages of Qualitative Methodologies: Lessons from Scripture and Addressing Misconceptions” Exploring the Strengths and Limitations of Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods: A Critical Analysis

    Instructions
In at least 300 words, reply to the original poster. You must use at least two scholarly journals to support your response.  You must also use at least one reference from the New International Version Bible.  All citations must be in APA 7th Edition format with both in-text citations and a References page.  If citations are from a book, the page number must be included.  Journals must be from within the past 5 years.  You must also use the attached text as a reference.
FYI…In the replies, many students do not analyze other students’ comments. Remember, you should write about the other student’s comments; that is, the good and bad points. Don’t just say you agree and tell the other student your opinion or just ask questions; that’s not sufficient. Look at several of their comments; list them in your reply, for context, and then critique them. I.e.:  I agree that on this point…; however, I disagree that it should be… On the other hand, you said that…, and, while I agree on part of that, I believe a better way… That’s analysis. Again, don’t simply tell them your opinions, as that is the biggest problem I see. Listing their comments is also important so that it gives a better understanding of what you are saying, according to the context of the comments.

Public administrators conduct research to plan, solve problems, and support their decisions. They must collect data to support these tasks and other courses of action. Unfortunately, the literature indicates that these public administrators mostly use quantitative methods. What can qualitative research offer than quantitative methods cannot offer to support these public administration tasks?
    Original Poster (Wendell Hindman)
Introduction to Qualitative Research for Public Administration
Within the public administration field, using quantitative data is the methodology of choice for most researchers (Ospina et al., 2017). While they collect data and evaluate numbers and trends, the lack of qualitative data leaves the research incomplete. The limited use of qualitative data and the often narrow scope of the methodology when it is employed have led to an underutilized and undervalued resource (Ospina et al., 2017). Qualitative data provides a glimpse of the makeup and composition of things, whereas quantitative provides a picture through numerical or statistical information (Lune & Berg, 2016). Public administrators who seek to find information to address problems, develop plans for the future or validate decisions should use a research methodology that allows them to measure the quality of information over quantity (Ospina et al., 2017). Quantitative researchers use deductive methods or approaches, while qualitative researchers use inductive approaches (Barczak, 2015).
Unlike quantitative research which evaluates statistical information, qualitative research focuses on determining the quality and value of information and its relationships to the subject being evaluated through systematic approaches (Barczak, 2015; Lune & Berg, 2016). The use of data to test hypotheses and determine the validity of an idea is replaced in qualitative research with specific observations and identification of patterns. This research type evaluates social interactions, behaviors, and other influences to measure their effects on people. While quantitative data looks for statistical significance, qualitative looks for patterns and relationships between the various factors (Lune & Berg, 2016). For researchers in public administration, these relationships and influences can provide information on not only the specific issue being evaluated but also provide a clearer picture of why the issue exists and what factors could potentially impact it. Quantitative methodology drives theoretical innovation and creates opportunities for the researcher to identify relationships outside a narrow or specific dataset (Hendren et al., 2022).
Qualitative data provides the researcher with understanding and information that could not be quantified numerically or through some other means (Queirós et al., 2017). These understandings provide explanations of the various social relationships and how they are intertwined and affect each other. Another advantage of qualitative methodologies is the immersion of the researchers themselves (Ospina et al., 2017; Queirós et al., 2017). In quantitative, the researcher is outside the problem or area of study looking inward to evaluate data gathered through some measurement instrument. Within qualitative studies, the researcher is more often immersed in the study in order to evaluate and closely examine the relationships and interactions of the area of study. While it may start with focus groups and external examinations, the nature of evaluation pulls the researcher into the study to fully grasp the problem and evaluate what influences the other behaviors have upon it (Queirós et al., 2017).
Within scripture, Jesus used parables to provide lessons on human behaviors and attitudes. These parables used qualitative evaluations to focus on those behaviors, emotions, and experiences. Quantitative methods do not provide an avenue to evaluate those basic human factors but leave the researcher only the opportunity to identify trends. Qualitative evaluations provided glimpses of how, what, and why people acted like they did, providing lessons in human behavior and the effects of sin on the heart. In Matthew chapter 13, Jesus is telling the story of the sower and scattering of seeds. When questioned why He uses parables to talk to the people, He explains in verse 14 that people hear without understanding and see without perceiving (Bible, 2021). He goes on to explain that people must understand within their hearts to gain understanding and knowledge, not simply rely on what they have heard and seen. The correlation exists within qualitative and quantitative studies, where the quantitative allows researchers to see and hear, but not fully understand. The qualitative methods allow the researcher to fully understand the heart.
Traditional use of qualitative research has focused primarily on case studies, leaving many to believe that this methodology is inferior to the quantitative methods (Barczak, 2015). Ospina, Esteve, and Lee (2017) evaluated qualitative studies and found that researchers often failed to be transparent about how the data was collected and analyzed, and failed to tie both epistemological and theoretical assumptions back to the correct methodologies. These failures, coupled with errors in the proper selection of methodology often limited the scope and outcomes of qualitative studies, which created some negative attitudes toward the method. The use of qualitative research provides opportunities to understand relationships and behavioral influences on factors being studied. This replaces the more traditional mindset of numerical significance and creates opportunities to determine what effect the variables have on one another, and more importantly, provides a glimpse into why those relationships exist.

Title: “Navigating the Legal Environment of the Dog Treat Industry: Protecting Salty Pawz from Liability and Other Legal Concerns”

Wanda is the owner of a small business, Salty Pawz, which makes and sells gourmet dog treats. One afternoon, Wanda sees a news story that reports on the recall of a well-known brand of dog treats that have sickened and even killed several dogs. Wanda is horrified and worries about the safety of her own treats. Wanda is very careful about her manufacturing process and only uses high-quality ingredients that come from sustainable farms. Still, these headlines make her nervous. If this well-known brand could make a mistake, could she? What if a batch of her Chicken Cuties is somehow contaminated and a dog dies from eating them?
Wanda comes to you for advice, not because you are an attorney, but because you know something about the legal environment of business and are concerned about her potential liability. To give Wanda as much help as possible, you will need to conduct research on the legal and regulatory environment for the dog treat industry. Once you have completed that research and have reviewed your course materials, you will be prepared to answer the following questions for Wanda:
What are some of the legal consequences that Wanda and the business could experience if a dog did get sick or even die from a treat?
How can Wanda protect herself and the business against lawsuits?
In addition to legal concerns related to dogs getting sick from Wanda’s treats, what other legal concerns exist for Wanda? Think about tort law, contract law, intellectual property law, and consumer protection law.

Title: The Importance and Complexity of Reasoning as a Higher-Order Cognitive Function

Metacognition is loosely defined as “thinking about thinking.” Cognition as a whole is also a very complex process. Cognition is somewhat of an umbrella term that includes all mental functions performed with our mind. It is what makes us different than other species. Certainly, other species have senses. They perceive things in the environment, and they have memory that enables them to survive. Some species even demonstrate some limited complex higher-order functions such as reasoning and problem-solving.
However, humans are unique in that they can use each lower-order cognitive function by itself to sense something, to perceive something, or to remember something. No other species can use and manipulate the basic cognitive functions performed everyday and combine them to think. When humans think, they combine and use a number of lower-order functions in order to successfully employ higher-order functions that allow them to survive, adapt, and even outthink other species and change our environment.
For this discussion, look at the topics we covered throughout the term, select one higher-order function (reasoning, problem-solving, decision-making, etc.), and think about that higher-order function. Then, submit a discussion post that includes the following:
The name of your selection (higher-order cognitive function: reasoning, problem-solving, etc.)
Why you believe it is most important compared to the rest of the higher-order functions we have discussed
An explanation/description of what occurs when the selected higher-order function is performed
An example of someone performing the function (solving a problem, reasoning, etc.) (It can be aviation-related but does not need to be.)
A discussion about the complexity of this selected function.
Please respond to this discussion with your initial post by the fourth day of the module week so that your fellow students have the opportunity to read and respond to your post as needed. Provide at least 2 (two) reputable scholarly sources to support your position.

“Improving Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Healthcare: An Interview and Issue Identification Report” “Leadership Approaches for Enhancing Collaboration in Interdisciplinary Teams”

    For this assessment, you will
create a 2–4-page report on an interview you have conducted with a health care
professional. (YOU CAN MAKE ONE UP).
Report on the information that you collected in your interview, analyzing
the interview data and identifying a past or current issue that would benefit
from an interdisciplinary approach. This could be an issue that has not been
addressed by an interdisciplinary approach or one that could benefit from
improvements related to the interdisciplinary approach currently being used.
You will discuss the interview strategy that you used to collect information.
Your interview strategy should be supported by citations from the literature.
    You will identify an issue
from the interview that could be improved with an interdisciplinary approach,
and review best practices and evidence to address the issue.
    When
submitting your plan, use the Interview and Issue Identification Template BELOW!
    Running head: INTERVIEW
    & INTERDISCIPLINARY ISSUE IDENTIFICATION  1
    Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification
    YOUR NAME
    NURS-FPX4010
    Capella University
    MONTH DAY, YEAR
    INTERVIEW AND
    INTERDISCIPLINARY ISSUE IDENTIFICATION 2
    Interview Summary
Summarize your interview in this section. Be sure to relate concise information
    about:
    · the
health care organization that was discussed in the interview.
    · the
    interviewee’s role and duties.
    · the
    relevant issues at the organization.
    · any
relevant comments on the actions taken by the organization or leadership
    previously
    and their effectiveness.
    · the
    organizational culture related to collaboration.
    · any
relevant collaboration or interdisciplinary team experience you interviewee has
    had.
The goal of this section is to convey what was discussed at the interview and
    identify an issue to
pursue throughout the rest of this assessment (and future assessments in this
    course), as well as
have enough information to relate theories, strategies, and approaches to the
    situation at the
    organization.
    Issue Identification
Identify the issue from the interview for which you consider an evidence-based
    interdisciplinary
approach appropriate. Provide one or more specific reasons why an
    interdisciplinary approach
would be appropriate for the issue.
Change Theories That Could Lead to an Interdisciplinary Solution
For this section, look to the literature and describe one or more change
    theories that would help
to develop an interdisciplinary solution to the identified issue. Also, you
    should briefly note the
relevance and credibility of the sources that you cite.
Another way to think through this section is:
    · What is
    the change theory?
    INTERVIEW AND
    INTERDISCIPLINARY ISSUE IDENTIFICATION 3
    · How
could it help create an interdisciplinary solution?
    · How
relevant is the theory to the specific identified issue?
    · How
    credible is the source?
Leadership Strategies That Could Lead to an Interdisciplinary Solution

    literature to help you
describe one or more leadership strategy that would help you develop an
    interdisciplinary
solution to the identified issue. Also, you should briefly note the relevance

“Exploring the Consensus and Controversies in Scientific Research: A Study on the Findings and Theories within Psychology” “The Impact of Social Media and Covid-19 on Mental Health: Examining Exaggerated Claims and Real Dangers” The Impact of Social Isolation on Teenagers’ Social Development during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Current Perspective

Science depends on research, it’s how discoveries are made and theories are tested. Often it’s useful to pull together the findings from several different studies to get a more general picture of what’s been found within some particular area of inquiry. Do the various studies agree regarding basic findings or are there contradictions? Does one general theory cover all the relevant data or are there competing theories and interpretations? These are the questions a research paper is designed to answer by summarizing reports from a number of related sources. That’s the task here. You are to write a research paper on a specific topic from within one of the general topic areas listed. Writing Your Paper
Your paper should summarize a minimum of three sources. It should be around five double-spaced pages in length using a 14 point font (nothing too small or too big). I also prefer half-inch margins. Given all that it should come out to around 1500 words. Since this is a psychology course I want you to reference your sources according to APA (American Psychological Association) style. More on that later. However, that is my only concern regarding APA style. Other than that, write this as you would any other paper for a course. You don’t need a title page, an abstract, running header or even page numbers. Keep it simple! But do remember to have a title and to put your name on it. 🙂 I would encourage you to work with a partner. That generally produces better papers as you edit each other’s work. However, I also realize coordinating efforts can be complicated. So, working with a partner is optional. If you decide to do so, get together early on so you can decide on the specific issue to research and plan how you’re going to divide up the work. Working with a partner should be a true collaboration, a joint effort. That is not the case if you write the first half, and your partner writes the second half. You’ll have to find ways to coordinate your efforts and pull it all together into a comprehensive paper. The requirements and grading criteria will be the same whether you work alone or with a partner. Partners will both receive the same grade for the collaborative effort. However, the way Canvas works each partner will need to submit a copy of the paper with both names on it to insure proper credit.
Regarding your sources, you should cite at least three, but you certainly can have more. Proper sources include textbooks, scholarly book chapters, peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, and legitimate videos from sources like PBS and Ted Talks. Use good sense and avoid Wikipedia, personal or corporate blogs as well as social media. The Cuyamaca LIbrary Resources page within this Module provides guides for determining if a source is legitimate, ways to search the college databases of psychology related journals and properly citing your sources.
In particular, you’ll need to cite your sources in the paper as you use them and in a reference list at the end of the paper. For APA style that means using just the last name(s) of the author(s) and the year such as ‘according to Jones (2024) …’ in the body of the paper. That’s it, nothing else. Any and all additional information goes in the citation in the reference list at the end. That should be alphabetical by author and each citation should contain all the information a person would need to find that particular source. Start with the name(s) of the author(s), then the year of publication, the article title, the journal title and the page numbers. Similar details if you cite a video. Simply providing a link or url address is not providing a reference. Those can change at any time and I may want to access the article from a different website. I’ve also set up a voluntary, non-graded discussion board in this Module for questions about the research paper. I’ll monitor that and try to provide answers. But help each other out as well. Some of you are more experienced with writing this kind of paper than others. That discussion board could also be used to connect with a partner, exchange ideas, share resources and anything else related to the paper.
When writing your paper, your intended audience should be fellow students. Do your best to be clear and concise. Don’t assume any knowledge on the part of the reader. Define concepts and spell out acronyms the first time you use them. Even a non-expert should be able to easily follow along and understand the ideas you’re presenting. Although your paper should follow the basic rules of grammar and proper spelling, keep in mind that I’m not an English professor. I’m not going to be overly zealous or technical when it comes to matters of grammar. But it should be of higher quality than a text message. 🙂
The paper is due at the end of Week 15 by 11:59 pm Sunday evening. That’s the week before the final week, giving me time to read and grade them. There’s plenty of time, but the earlier you get started the easier it will be to find resources and pull them all together. Choosing Your Topic
There are two general topic areas from which to select your topic. Now, you cannot address a large global issue effectively in 1500 words. So, once you’ve decided which general area interests you, you’ll need to narrow that down to a specific aspect of the larger issues to research for your paper. You can always ask for help in the Writing the Research Paper Discussion Board, or message me through Canvas Inbox, if you’re having trouble narrowing your topic to something manageable or finding relevant sources. General Topic Area 1
In the United States there has recently been growing concern regarding the effects of social media on young people. A number of states joined together in a lawsuit against Meta, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. The U.S. congress is considering legislation to ban TikTok entirely. The government claims include national security issues, collection of data from children and teens, the prevalence of misinformation, foreign governments influencing public opinion and elections among the threats. When TikTok put out a message for users to contact their congressional representatives to protest and thousands upon thousands of children, teens and young adults did so it really didn’t help their case. Social scientists have also raised concerns about social media. One claim is that social media employs aspects derived from gaming, such as particular colors and sounds, to stimulate the brains of users. In essence, the apps are addictive. A new term, FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), is now used to describe the feelings of anxiety felt by young people when they don’t have access to social media. The images of people presented are often cherry picked, retouched and otherwise enhanced. They represent an unrealistic and unattainable body image, particularly to young females. The resultant rise in cases of depression and body dysmorphia has led to a significant increase in eating disorders. The representation of unhealthy choices and lifestyles to impressionable young people is another issue. Cyberbully poses an inescapable form of harassment for the victims. Finally, there are concerns about the effects on creativity, independent thought and critical thinking. The prevalence of anxiety, depression and suicide among young people are all at record highs. How has social media contributed to this? For the assignment, pick one of these areas and examine what the danger might really be. Are the claims we hear from the government or mainstream media exaggerated? Is there scientific research to support that a danger exists? What is the degree of danger, the potential threat? Do the research findings match your personal experiences with social media? Yes, your own experiences are relevant to this debate. General Topic Area 2
The Covid-19 lockdowns and the disruptions in people’s lives a few years ago had devastating effects on mental health and well-being. There were problems concerning stress, anxiety, depression, social isolation, addiction, drug abuse, domestic abuse, child abuse and education. Certain groups, generally those already disadvantaged, were disproportionately affected because they lacked the resources required to effectively manage all of it. For the assignment select one specific facet of all this that really interests you. Then extensively research the latest findings. Using those resources, write a research paper on what we have learned over the course of this experience. That means current stuff. What are the experts saying right now about what happened, how it was handled and the lingering issues still affecting people? I would suggest examining one factor and how it affected a particular age group. For example, what was the effect of social isolation on the normal course of social development among teens during the Covid lock downs? Or, what was the effect on academic achievement for grade school children as a result of distance learning during Covid?
    Final Comments
I think there are ample opportunities here to find something of interest from within the two general topic areas. However, if there is some topic that you have a keen interest in and would like to research to learn more that would also be acceptable. After all, the best papers are always based on topics that students have a genuine interest in pursuing. Just message me by way of Canvas Inbox to get your topic approved.
