2. Evaluate the work you did during this class and explain ways you could have performed better.
3. Assess the course objectives you still do not understand and suggest how to improve the course to meet those objectives.
4. List ways you might measure the future effects of what you have learned in this course or your future progress/improvement.

Greetings class and professor,
This class has been challenging, allowed me to really focus on my studies without feeling too overwhelmed, but while also learning a lot in a short amount of time. My research skills with each weeks required reading really helped understand the discussions each week as well.
One thing I could have definitely done better with this class is read more articles that had to do with the topic. One thing I tend to do with online school is become lazy with some reading and just focus on 1-2 articles. I really would like to start helping myself to understand better with my own research and I do feel like this class has been one of the better classes with helping me with it!
The one discussion I had trouble with was week 4, developing supplier performance. The only reason I struggle with that is that the reading provided did not match other sources from outside with research, but that could just be a personal struggle I had and no one else could’ve felt that way!
Some take aways from this course that I can apply would be to always be transparent, realistic and trust worthy with not only myself but to those I will work with in the future. I’ve noticed that in a lot of the readings or discussions those are some important traits to carry towards relationships in this field. Regardless, those are very important traits to have as a person!
Thank you for all the discussions and interactions during this course. Good luck to everyone and their future endeavors!
-Lily
Jamian Ross
The most important economic principle I learned from this course is the concept of supply and demand. Supply and demand dynamics are crucial in macroeconomics as they form the basis for analysing how markets function and how changes in various factors affect the economy as a whole. Supply and demand represent the relationship between the quantity of a good or service that producers are willing to supply and the quantity that consumers are willing to buy at different prices; they are key as they explain how prices are determined in a market economy. Understanding supply and demand enables economists analyse various macroeconomic phenomena such as unemployment, inflation, and economic growth. For instance, when there is an increase in aggregate demand relative to aggregate supply, it can lead to demand-pull inflation as prices rise due to excess demand. Conversely, if aggregate demand falls short of aggregate supply, it can result in deflationary pressures and unemployment as businesses reduce production and lay off workers.
Moreover, supply and demand analysis is critical for policymakers in formulating appropriate economic policies. For instance, during periods of recession, policymakers may use expansionary monetary and fiscal policies to stimulate aggregate demand and boost economic activity. Conversely, during periods of high inflation, contractionary policies may be employed to reduce demand and stabilize prices.
In essence, the principle of supply and demand is key to understanding macroeconomics as it provides insights into how markets work, how prices are determined, and how changes in various factors affect the overall economy. By mastering supply and demand analysis, policymakers can make more informed decisions to promote economic growth and stability.

“Exploring the Vibrant Culture and Commerce of Jean-Talon Market: An Observation and Analysis” “Exploring the Vibrant Flavors and Culture of Marché Jean-Talon: A Food Column”
The assignment: It consists in two parts:
1) An observation of Jean-Talon market in Montreal during which you write your data (fieldnotes) in the observation grid provided as part of this assignment. Refer to document titled: Observation in Jean Talon market. No typewritten or audio/video recorded fieldnotes will be accepted.
2) An analysis of the market using as data the fieldnotes you wrote in the observation grid.
Submitting your assignment: You must submit one file, properly identified with your name and ID number. We will not grade anonymous assignments. This file contains:
1) All your handwritten fieldnotes for this assignment must be entered in the observation grid provided (observation in Jean Talon market). Fieldnotes MUST be scanned (any photocopy shop can scan them for you), and handed in with your paper in a separate file.
2) Your paper, i.e. your analysis of the market (between 2000 and 3000 words). Please print the word count at the end of your analysis. If you do the assignment in a team of two, the word count is between 3500 and 4000 words.
The assignment itself
Part 1: Print the observation grid and take it to Jean-Talon market to do your fieldwork and write your fieldnotes. All sections must be filled.
Part 2: Write your paper
The task is to transform your field notes into a text. It has been made easier by the fact that I have organized the fieldwork and observation in Marché Jean Talon around particular themes. You now need to ‘write it up’.
A note on content : All the themes contained in the observation guide must be included in your text. The map of the market, as you have drawn it, must also be included. Pictures are not allowed and must not be submitted.
A note on style : You can opt to write the analysis up in any way you like : a short story ; a letter to a friend ; a mystery novel ; a food writer column ; a tourist guide, a research paper with a thesis you wish to argue, etc. However, the level of language must meet the requirements of an academic exercise: no slang, no spoken word forms (except in a dialogue), and impeccable grammar and spelling!
How to start?
First, you must start by reading your field notes so that you become familiar with the content. Read them more than once; identify the sections that are richer in data (the notes you have taken) and the sections that are weaker. If necessary, go back to the market, and fill in the holes. Identify the sections that you like the best and that may become more central to your text. Not all of us are sensitive to the same things and it may be that you were particularly attracted to the colors of the market that day, or impressed by the diversity of the fruits that were sold, or outraged by the prices!
Choose the style in which you are going to do the writing up. This will inform the structure of the text. If you opt to write a research paper, then you must have a thesis around which your paper will be built and which will help you argue and describe. The latter could be: Going to market is an aesthetic experience. Or, Going to market means buying with a conscience. Or, Marché Jean-Talon is fashionable. Before starting, READ the ‘how to write a research paper’ guide to be found on the Concordia library website.
If you opt to write a letter to a friend, then the structure can be freer, of course. Whatever the style you choose, aim at writing with flair, energy, and intellectual rigor. In all instances, you should be able to convey the essence of the market, its characteristics, its ambiance, etc. In all cases, you should have an argument in mind and this argument should be clear to the readers as they read your paper.
Writing:
Write an outline, rewrite it as need be, and follow it once you are happy with the final version. You are not obliged to follow the order of the themes as they appear in the observation guide.Focus on what is important or what caught your imagination and what you hope to convey in the letter, or in the short story, or in the food column. Always build an argument around the thesis you have chosen to discuss or write about in your letter, or your tourist guide, and line up your ‘proofs’. Be careful of choosing a thesis that you can argue with the data you have.
Except for the research paper, you do not need to include references to the literature. The emphasis will be on the depth of the data, the richness of the information, the precision of the observation, the meaning you can derive from what you saw and experienced.
Do not limit yourself to a description. You must provide an analysis or contextualization as well whenever relevant. For instance, if you write that the market that day was red and green, and wax eloquent on the bright colors of the red peppers, it is important also to think about why that is the case, but also that the quantity of everything adds to the general impression of colors. Reflect on what the reasons behind (and consequences) such large quantities of food being produced. In other words, do not take things at face value. However aesthetically pleasing going to market may be, keep a critical mind!
If you chose the research paper format, you must include an introduction and a conclusion as well as a bibliography (the latter is not included in the word count).
This is how you will be graded:
Fieldnotes (50% of the grade):
We will assess their richness (diversity, precision, quantity, thoroughness).
Analysis (50% of the grade):
We will assess
1) How you write up and present your data in your analysis, and make sense of it for the reader) (20%)
2). The synthetic gaze (how you build a coherent picture of the market) (20%)
The clarity and structure of writing and argument (10%)
Planning your work
Below, I am indicating the time you should devote to each elements of the assignment.
Step 1: Doing a bit of research on Marché Jean-Talon before going there (about 3 hours)
Step 2: Observing Marché Jean-Talon and writing your observations in the grid (about 3 hours)
Step 3: Organizing your data (and adding some information that you have memorized or that you have gathered during Step 1) (about 2 hours)
Step 4: Sorting/choosing pictures, reducing them, and writing a caption for each (about 1 hour)
Step 5: Writing an outline (about 30 minutes)
Step 6: Writing the paper itself: About 9 hours, spread over 3 or 4 days (or about 750/1000 words per day). This is quite possible: Keep in mind that during in-class essay exams, students routinely write about 1000 to 1200 words in 3 hours). -

“Exploring Family Dynamics in the Media: A Sociological Analysis”
Considering course readings and additional sources outside of our course materials, observe and analyze families on video (media), choose three (3) families in the media (television, radio, movies, etc.). For example, a family in the media may be The Huxtable Family from The Cosby Show, The Bundys from Married…With Children, and/or The Simpsons from The Simpsons. Now, you cannot choose these shows since I listed them for you. There are plenty of other shows that you can choose from. Using your sociological imagination and incorporating a sociological theoretical perspective, analyze how the family of your chosen shows are depicted. You should choose a movie or television show depicting a “family” from any time frame. Observe, examine, and report on the family dynamics, i.e., mother, father, single mother, single father, same sex parents, etc., culture, values, socioeconomic status, religious, sexual orientation, spiritual beliefs, rituals, interactions, trends, and relate how is this family being depicted in the media similar or not to current trends, notions, ideologies about “the family” in American society. Consider these questions and feel free to include many of your own:
Who are they, (i.e., from which t.v. show)?
How do they define family?
Who is the head of the family?
Who makes the decisions for the family?
How many children are in the family?
Are the parents successful, professional, blue-collar? How does their socio-economic status affect their family dynamics?
What societal issues are depicted on the show?
What sociological theory explains this family’s interactions? (This question is mandatory).
Can you relate to this family from your own family’s interactions, cultural traditions, familial expectations, etc.?
Is this a good representation of family in the media and why or why not?
In your PowerPoint, tell us who are the families (be as creative as possible), address the questions, apply themes from the classroom and/or text to your observations of the family in the media. You must have references for your PowerPoint Presentation. FAMILIES ACROSS CULTURES IN THE MEDIA Research Project PowerPoint will be due on June 24th @ 11:59 p.m. -

“Comparing Perspectives: The Impact of Smartphones and Social Media on Youth Mental Health”
At this point, you have read at least one article about the topic that you will be researching throughout this semester, and you have closely analyzed that article in the source evaluation essay. Starting from that article, you will now have the opportunity to compare two author’s views on the same subject, and determine which author employs more effective argumentation.
So, choose another source and write an essay in proper MLA format comparing and contrasting it to the first one. The essay should evaluate the ways two authors writing on the same subject employ unique perspectives, points of emphasis, types of evidence, OR opinions about the same issue.
Getting Started:
Find an article that either supports or opposes the opinion(s) of the author from the source you wrote about on our first assignment. If you have found that the source you chose for the first assignment is not a good choice for this assignment, let me know so I can potentially approve you choosing a different source as one of the two.
Then as a writing assignment worth 100 points, write a response based on the options below.
Option 1: Write about two articles that generally agree on the issue, but in different ways (as in, they use different types of evidence, have different points of emphasis, have differing perspectives of logic, use different emotional appeals, establish credibility in different ways, etc.). Discuss points by which one article presents its argument differently than the first.
Option 2: Write about two articles that altogether disagree about an issue. Focus your evaluation on major points by which one source takes issue with the other and is essentially more effective at making its argument.
A brief checklist:
The Introductory Paragraph should name both articles, authors, and provide an opinionated thesis that makes an determination of which author makes the stronger argument and identifies the main points you will be discussing in the essay.
Include multiple well-developed body paragraphs focusing on points of comparison/contrast.
Use specific quotes and paraphrases from the sources to demonstrate textual evidence and support.
Sources should be properly cited in MLA format (within the text and on an accurate Works Cited page).
As with the first essay, the purpose of this assignment is not to fully explore your research topic. Instead, you will be focusing on the argumentation that the two authors employ.
Include a conclusion that makes a final judgement (as in which essay is most effective) and reiterates your main ideas.
The finished essay should be at least two but no more than three pages in length if written in proper MLA format (double spaced throughout, 12 point font, etc.).
Make sure your sources do not come from Wikipedia (because it’s a potentially unverified encyclopedia, thus informative and not argumentative) or websites like ProCon.org (because a unified argument and critical evaluation of the author and publication is important) or similar sites.
This assignment is essentially asking you to make a comparison and contrast evaluation of two articles you are planning to use as sources for your major research project.
In my second essay, I’m going to use this source.
“Smartphones, social media use, and youth mental health”
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7012622/
This source is the one that I used for the first essay.
