Title: Identifying and Addressing the Achievement Gap for English Language Learners at Maple Elementary School
The purpose of applied research in education is to solve a real-world problem of practice or to make improvements in practice. The research topic is specific to, and uses data for, a specific site and stakeholders. For this Discussion, describe one real-world problem of practice that is prominent at an actual site. Name the specific problem of practice. For example, you should say, “The problem is that 36% of students with special needs fail to graduate with a general diploma at Hampton High School in Ohio.” Then elaborate on how this is problematic in the specific site where you propose to conduct your research. The point of this prompt is to learn and discuss several relevant problems of practice with your classmates. Include at least one relevant Bible verse that could address the problem of practice. Note that you need to discuss a real problem at a real site. In this description, include at least one citation from a scholarly peer-reviewed journal article that was published within the last five years.

Title: The Link between Video Games and Obesity: A Comparison of Popular and Scholarly Perspectives
I have pre-selected two articles on the subject of video games and obesity for you to compare and contrast: “The Health Effects of Too Much Gaming” from Harvard (https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/the-health-effects-of-too-much-gaming-2020122221645) and the scholarly article “Fright but not Fight.” (see attachnent)
In writing your essay you will collect evidence in the form of direct quotations or paraphrasing of ideas from the article. When you use a direct quotation, mark off the borrowed language with quotation marks (“like this for example”) and use a citation at the end of the sentence that includes the author’s name, year, and paragraph or page number: (Wells et al., 2022, p. 477) for the scholarly source and (Grinspoon, 2020, para. 7) for the popular source–and yes, just count the paragraphs.
In the essay you will begin with an introduction in which you will explain what obesity is, why people may be concerned that there is a link between obesity and video games, a brief, one sentence description of each article, and then your thesis on comparing and contrasting the two articles.
In the body of the essay you will follow either a block format for comparison (detailed analysis of one article and then the other) or a point-by-point method in which you discuss aspects of each article together in one paragraph. Regardless, the body should have multiple paragraphs. Each time you start a new topic, then you should begin a new paragraph.
In the conclusion of the essay you will discuss why this topic may be important to children, parents, and health care givers and how these articles would be useful to each group.
Requirements:
Word Count: Between 750-1000 words.
At least one direct quotation from each article: make certain not to excessively use direct quotations however (no more than two per paragraph).
Following the organizational format above.
Applying our notes on popular and scholarly sources to analyze the two articles.
Please use an APA title page so we can begin practicing! -

Title: “The Value of Life and Road Safety: An Economic Analysis”
Instructions
Value of Life
Suppose there is a road improvement which will save 1 life per year, reducing the number of fatalities from 2 to 1 per year (out of 1000 people using the road). Assume all travelers are identical. What value of life should be used in the analysis?
Normally, we would do the equivalent of trying to compute for each traveler what is the willingness to pay for a 50% reduction in the chance of death by driving (from 2 in 1000 to 1 in 1000) and multiply that by the 1000 people whose chance of dying is reduced.
An alternative approach is to figure out the willingness to pay for the driver whose life is saved. So how much would you pay to avoid dying (with certainty) (i.e. what is your Willingness to Pay)? The answer to the first question is usually taken to be all of your resources (you would pay you everything so I won’t kill you).
Alternatively, how much can I pay you to allow you to let me kill you (Willingness to Accept)? The answer to this second question is: I would have to pay you an infinite amount of money in order for you to let me kill you.
Both of those sums of money (everything or infinity) likely exceed the willingness to pay to reduce the likelihood of dying with some probability, multiplied by the number of people experiencing it.
In economic terms, we are comparing the area under the demand curve (the consumer’s surplus) for life (which has a value asymptotically approaching infinity as the amount of life approaches 0 (death approaches certainty) for a single individual, with the marginal change in the likelihood of survival multiplied by all individuals (i.e. the quadrilateral between the y-axis of price and the same demand curve, between Pb and Pa) which describes the change in price for a change in survival).
On the one hand, using the marginal change for everyone rather than total change for the one person whose life is saved, we will give a lower value to safety improvements. On the other hand, the value of life to the individual himself is much higher than the value of life of that individual to society at large.

“Ethical Dilemmas in Engineering: A Case Study on Conflict of Interest in Facilities Design and Construction”
Overview
The issue of conflict of interest is among the most fundamental ethical situations faced by engineers. In the course of their professional practice, engineers face situations involving conflict of interest on an ongoing basis. Each situation must be evaluated based upon the individual and specific facts in the case as there is no one-size-fits-all rule that can be applied to conflict of interest situations. Some situations involve obvious answers while others are more complicated and require careful analysis and examination. While sometimes the appropriate response is disclosure of all of the facts and circumstances to all parties, in other cases, disclosure is insufficient and other courses of action are necessary. In other situations, the engineer must avoid the conflict entirely or else run afoul of basic ethical principles. Instructions
Scenario:
You are an engineer employed by a facilities design, contracting and engineering firm. You are bidding on designing and constructing a new FAB plant for Acme Semiconductors. Since your engineering firm does not have adequate background in the construction of a FAB plant, you procure the services of an expert within the industry. You have retained the industry expert for three months during the bidding process. As a consortium, you begin the bidding process for the project.
The expert lets you know that there are only three companies that can perform this type of facilities construction and if each company bids competitively, then the margins of profit will be approximately 15 million at best. He has an idea. He tells you that if you will bid the project at 150 million that you will in essence gain 50 million in margin. He will use a third of the 50 million margin (1/3 x 50) to pay off the other two companies for the time period, thus all three companies will be profitable for this project. He will do all the negotiations behind the scenes so you will have no knowledge of the process or doings.
As a new engineer, you are very interested in really gaining an appreciation and understanding of how big business and big construction operations. Questions:
1. What are the major ethical issues and tradeoffs herein?
2. What are all the possible courses of actions and potential outcomes?
3. What are the expectation of you from the NSPE engineering community? 4. If this ethical issue became a case in court, what would the opening statement of the prosecutor be?
5. What is the right thing to do?
Requirements:
1. Based on your knowledge of the NSPE Code of Ethics (link available in the Ethics Case Study Resources section) and your research, reflect on the proper course of action you should take in the scenario presented. Your position should be specifically based on contents of the Code and on upon your worldview. Clearly identify how you would address any potential conflicts of interest. Synthesize the similarities and differences between the Bible’s approach to ethics and the engineering creed as they pertain to this scenario. Keep in mind that you are an employee of the construction design/contracting firm, not a manager or executive in the company. You must carefully balance your personal views with those of the company and the international standards represented by NSPE.
2. Prepare a 1200-1500 word report (length of main body, not counting title or reference page) on your evaluation of this situation, taking care to properly cite sources both intext and in a reference list at the end of the report.
3. Your report is to be to be submitted through Canvas in a doc, docx, or pdf file with the following specifications:
• use font styles Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman with a font size of 12
• use 1.5 line spacing
• use 1 inch margins on all sides -

“Close Reading and Annotation of a Short Story: Identifying Literary Elements and Keywords” “Analyzing Short Stories: Annotated Rubric Assignment”
Keywords and Annotation: Close Reading of a Short Story
The first time you read the short stories for this class, you will be doing what is considered passive reading—reading the story with an open mind. Perhaps you will flag things that stood out to you, or that raised questions. You may jot down unfamiliar words to look up later. Mainly, though, you read to locate main ideas that help you follow the story. One way a reader stays connected to the main idea of the story is through keywords. Authors will purposefully use and repeat keywords throughout their writing to emphasize an important idea or concept. Repetition of a keyword may also occur through use of synonyms, such as using “sightless” or “loss of vision” as synonymous with “blind.” Annotating keywords can help us understand the literary elements of a short story, such as plot, character, setting, diction, or theme. You were introduced to these literary terms in Week 1. For this homework assignment, you will reread and annotate the story you chose for Week 2, Discussion 1. You will locate keywords that signal the literary elements of the short story. You should read closely and carefully, noting words or synonyms that repeatedly draw your attention to the literary elements of theme, plot, character, and setting. In a printed book, you may underline or highlight them. You may also write notes to yourself in the margins. In a PDF, you may be using the markup tools or comment features.
There is no exact, “right way” of annotating a particular story; like the writing process, the close reading process is yours to individualize. If you prefer to print out the story on paper, annotate it by hand, and then upload a picture or scan of the paper, that submission would be perfectly fine as well.
In short, by reading the story more than once and annotating it, you are engaging in active reading, which will improve your experience as a reader. You will comprehend more, remember more, react more, and possibly visualize more. The reason to annotate is to become an active reader. Directions: Identify three of the following literary elements in the story, and explain how you recognize them: plot character setting theme Choose just one of the literary elements that you discussed in Question 1 and list 10 keywords in the story that relate to that element. Annotate at least one section of the story that elucidates the literary element.
Take a screenshot (or a picture, if you’re using a print version) of your annotated section(s) of the story. Save it as a PDF or JPG, and upload it to the Assignments area of the classroom.

The Reflection of Society in Shakespeare’s Macbeth The Reflection of Society in Shakespeare’s Macbeth William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth is a timeless classic that continues to captivate audiences with its themes of ambition, power, and the consequences of unchecked desire
After reading the script, write a 4 – 5 page paper that illustrates how the script works as a reflection of the society for which it was originally written. You will need to use Aristotle’s six elements of drama as a guide for the elements of the script to discuss. In other words, focus on character, plot, theme, dialogue/language, music & spectacle (if applicable); pointing out how each of these elements reflected specific aspects of society. Finally, your paper should conclude by discussing ways in which this script is or is not relevant for today’s society. Use examples from the script to support any points you make.
