“Capturing the Spirit of Third Cinema: A Collection of Narrated Production Stills”
Students will compile a collection of at least five narrated production stills (500 words each) that follow the spirit and tradition of the Third Cinema genre. Third Cinema directors operated in real life settings with real life people. Rather than use photography or videography, students will observe local, real life scenarios of everyday life that might be fitting for a film of the Third Cinema genre. They will describe the scene, then analyze its relevance to course concepts. Through this exercise, students will practice description and analysis.
Third Cinema is a Latin American film movement during the Cold War that decries neocolonialism and the capitalist system. It is meant to challenge the colonial hegemony of dominant Hollywood by serving the needs of colonized people in the Third World. It is a form of decolonizing through cinematography.

Part 1: The Impact of Alcohol Use on Intimate Partner Violence: An Analysis Using the Power and Control Wheel Part 2: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Gerontology: Examining Aging Through Sociology and Cultural Anthropology
part 1
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2016), Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a serious, preventable public health problem that affects millions of Americans. The term “intimate partner violence” describes physical, sexual, or psychological harm by a current or former partner or spouse. Nearly 38 percent of IPV perpetrators have significant alcohol problems (NIAAA).
Using the Power and Control Wheel, select one topic and explain how alcohol use can exacerbate intimate partner violence. Here is a link to a video of the wheel of power and control.
part 2
We examined the concept of interdisciplinarity and what makes social science an interdisciplinary topic in Week 1. Gerontology is a highly interdisciplinary social science, as it draws on research, theories, and ideas from many different fields to better address the topic of aging. This week’s material asked you to examine aging from the perspectives of the five other social sciences we have examined in this course. Choose two of the resources and answer the following questions:
What two social science fields do the resources you chose represent?
What does each source add to your understanding of the issues in gerontology? How would it affect your understanding of this topic if you looked at it from one perspective? What are the consequences if a social scientist has incomplete knowledge of a topic? • Sociology
• Cultural Anthropology
• Psychology
• Political Science
• Economics

“The Resurrection of Chairman Mao: A Reflection on Contemporary China’s Development and Society”
Discuss the following topic in a paper
of 6-8 typed, double-spaced pages. Please
use one-inch margin on all four
edges with 12-point Times New Roman
font. Come up with a good title for your paper and put a page number on
each page. Be sure to follow my formatting requirements. Essays are due via
email by June 27, Thursday, 1pm.
Essays will be mainly judged by the
extent to which they make a clear, plausible argument for whatever position
they take, supported by relevant evidence from both lectures and readings. This topic is constructed so that you should
NOT need to use any materials from outside of class; do not do so without
consulting me first. Regardless of where your material comes from, sources must
be cited. Formal footnotes are not necessary, but some indication of the basis
for your claims is needed: a brief parenthetical such as “(Textbook, p.
88)” will be good enough. Using
material of any sort without properly acknowledging the source may constitute
plagiarism; students who are in any way uncertain about these matters
should consult the UH guidelines on academic dishonesty and/or me before
handing in your papers.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
The use of generative
AI tools and chatbots (e.g. ChatGPT) is NOT permitted in this course for
writing entire sentences, paragraphs or essays to complete any class
assignments. 10-30 points will be deducted for any assignment that is found to
have used generative AI tools in unauthorized ways as indicated above.
You
are deliberately being asked to write on a fairly general topic, so that you
can demonstrate how much you have learned from all the lectures, readings and
discussions for the course. Your paper should not merely summarize the books or
lectures. It must present your own thinking and interpretation. Your
instructor is available for consultation, guidance, explication, and
encouragement whenever you need it. Good luck and happy writing!
Paper
topic
Imagine
that Chairman Mao could be brought back to life to see early 21st
century China, as described in the lectures, readings and video clips. Aside
from the technological changes of contemporary years, what things about the way
ordinary Chinese families (both rural and urban) live as well as how the party,
government and society operate do you think would most surprise him? What
things would he find relatively familiar? What things do you think he would
approve of and disapprove of, and why? How would he think of the Chinese model
of development? -

“Pros and Cons of Working in a Unionized Organization: An Employee Perspective”
The Discussion Board question for Week 6 is:
From an employee perspective, what are three advantages of working in a unionized organization? What are three disadvantages?
Discussion Forum Participation
Online discussions pose an opportunity for rich and meaningful student learning and interaction. Online discussions extend classroom learning by providing an asynchronous method of communication for the exchange of meaningful ideas that promote critical thinking and develop thoughtful reflective learning. All students are expected to participate in each weekly discussion. These forums will be grounded in durable or critical thinking utilizing case studies, problem/solution scenarios or other appropriate assignments.
Students must answer all questions in APA style, citing references from the book and other sources. All answers must be at least two paragraphs. Students must also reply to at least two other students’ posting.
The questions posed in the discussion board/forum are generally related to a major topic examined in the assigned readings. These online discussions pose an opportunity for rich and meaningful student learning and interaction. Online discussions extend classroom learning by providing an asynchronous method of communication for the exchange of meaningful ideas that promote critical thinking and develop thoughtful reflective learning. All students are expected to participate in each weekly discussion. These forums will be grounded in critical thinking. Students are expected to participate, so please be on time with your postings. You can post your answer and responses at any time prior to the stated deadlines. Since discussions require class interaction, no credit will be given if the post is not submitted in the week due. Although you can use other sources to answer the discussion topics and essays, you are also required to include information from the week’s readings.
Consider the following when you post:
Is the contribution mechanically clear enough for readers to understand the points being made?
Is the contribution on time?
Does the contribution meet the minimum length requirements?
Does the contribution reference assigned readings or other resources?
Does the post contain “critical thinking” that is indicative of the paradigms in the field?
Are the ideas communicated with respect for those who may dissent?
You are also required to respond to at least two colleagues – at least one half-page each. Consider the following when you reply:
Is the reply mechanically clear enough for readers to understand the points?
Does the tone of the reply demonstrate respect towards the author of the original post?
Does the reply inspire further discussion among the class?
All postings will be completed by Sunday midnight and will use a grading rubric.
Other things to consider:
Please be professional and courteous.
Online communication lacks the non-verbal cues that provide much of the meaning in face-to-face conversations. Choose your words carefully, phrase your sentences clearly, and keep your sentences and paragraphs brief.
Review appropriate “Netiquette” at http://www.albion.com/netiquette/ (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.
State the main topic of your posting in the Subject line.
State your purpose for writing at or near the beginning of your message whenever possible.
Proofread what you post. You may want to use a word processor to draft what you intend to say, check your spelling and grammar, and then paste your text into the Message section of your posting.
Please do not use all capital letters. It makes it hard to read, and it comes across as though you were shouting.
