“Analyzing the Effectiveness of an Argument: A Case Study”
Rough Draft Due: June 23, 2024 (On Canvas Through TurnItIn)
Final Draft Due: June 30, 2024 (On Canvas Through TurnItIn)
Purpose:
In this essay, students will select an essay and identify its purpose and audience; then, analyze how effectively its tone, logos, ethos, and pathos appeal to that audience.
Skills:
In life, many ideas are presented with varying degrees of evidence. While it would be nice to have the time to evaluate everything, people should at least be able to analyze the arguments that are most important to their lives. This essay is about examining an argument and determining what is effective and not effective about it for its intended audience. Use these skills to analyze important arguments presented to you in your life.
Knowledge:
The ability to determine the effectiveness of an argument and its evidence.
Task:
We are reading several argumentative essays with various appeals that support their argument. In this essay, examine how ONE of the following essays makes its argument:
“Violent Media is Good for Kids” https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2000/06/violent-media-good-kids-0/Links to an external site.
“Why Videogames Should Be Played With Friends, Not Online With Strangers” https://www.wired.com/2014/06/gaming-on-the-couch/Links to an external site.
“Opinion: When Nurses Are at Risk, Our Patients Are Too”
https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/12/opinions/nurses-strike-nyc-ghazalLinks to an external site.
Each of these texts the class has read discusses a specific problem facing American society and the way it functions. Using ONE of these essays, examine:
What are the writer’s (writers’) thesis and claims? (introduction)What are they arguing?
What is the writer trying to solve?
According to your analysis, is the argument effective? (thesis)
What is the audience? How do you know?
Look up the author and publication. Does this data reveal any biases? Do the author’s biases make their argument less effective?
Does the author have the appropriate credibility to make the argument (ethos)? How is the author credible or not?
Does the author cite sources that have the appropriate credibility to make the argument (ethos)? How is the source credible or not?
Do the date, place, or context of publication reveal anything about the story?
What kinds of logical arguments (logos) does the author use?Do the solutions address the problems?
What emotional appeals does the author use? (pathos)
Are the examples that the author puts forward relevant to their argument? Why or why not?
Evaluate these points, and using your analysis, form a perspective that evaluates the argument, context, and major points.
Be clear and concise. (Avoid wordiness and use thesis, topic sentences, transitions, etc.)
Be sure to cite the essay you use and any other cites you reference, though you should not do research for this essay. Focus on how the article is effective or not for the audience.
Remember, do not bring in your own arguments into this essay.
This essay will be 1,200 words long and must be in correct MLA format.
Remember to include appropriate essay structure, including a thesis statement, topic sentences, introduced and explained quotes/paraphrases, and a restated thesis.
The Rough Draft is due on Sunday, June 23rd, through Canvas for my comments. It only needs to be 600 words long, though it can be full length.
The full-length Final Draft should be revised by Sunday, June 30th, through Canvas for the final grade. This should be 1,200 words. -

Embracing Change: My Personal Response and Reflections on Unnecessary Change in Life Introduction: Change is an inevitable part of life, and how we respond to it can greatly impact our personal growth and development. In this discussion, I will
Choose one of the following questions to answer for this week’s discussion board. Make sure to repost the question you selected at the top of your posting.
How do you typically respond to change? Do you embrace it? Seek it out? Accept it reluctantly? Avoid it at all cost? Is this behavior like that of your friends and that of your family? Has your behavior always fit this pattern, or has the pattern changed throughout your life? If so, what life events have altered how you view and respond to change?
Try to remember a situation in your own life that involved unnecessary change. Why do you think that the change was unnecessary? What types of turmoil did it cause? Were there things a change agent could have done that would have increased unfreezing in this situation?
A brief introductory paragraph introduces the topic of the discussion. One or more succinct paragraphs are needed to answer each of the discussion board questions. Use current literature (5 years old or less) to support your views. Be sparing in your use of quotes. Learn to paraphrase the information you are sharing from a source. A paragraph at the end gives a brief summary of the discussion. The initial posting for each topic should be a minimum of 500 words in length (not including the references -

“Assessing Financial Performance: A Comparative Analysis of Target and Competitor Companies in the U.S. Public Market”
Q
FINA Project Instructions
The objective of this project is to link the principles, practices and policies of financial management with the actual
performances of companies by using their financial statements and other published information about their
activities. More specifically, each student must select one “target” non-financial U.S. public corporation that will be
the primary focus of your report together with one additional U.S. public company in the same industry, which can
be used as a “competitor” for comparison. Find your selected “target” and “competitor” firms’ income statements
and balance sheet statements for their last two years (e.g. 2022 and 2023). You can find the financial statements on
Yahoo Finance. The following items are suggested outline for your report.
Introduction with General Information about the “target” Company (Note, the below bullet points must only be
completed for the target company)
the complete name of the selected company
the company’s industry
a brief description of the company’s business, its significant products, areas of operation, and events in
company history.
Assessment of the Corporation’s Financial Performance:
1. Present the balance sheet for the last two years (simplify and try to fit into one page) for your “target” and
“competitor” companies.
2. Present the income statement for the last two years (simplify and try to fit into one page) for your “target” and
“competitor” companies.
3. Compute the following ratios for the most recent and previous year for your firm as well as the competitor
firm (try to create a table that summarizes all the ratios for the “target” and “competitor” companies).
Profitability Ratios
Gross Margin
Operating margin
Net profit margin
Valuation Ratios
Price-to-Earnings ratio
Market-to-Book ratio
4. Analyze the “target” and “competitor” financial conditions based on the financial ratios calculated above. You
will need to evaluate your “target” firm’s financial condition by comparing each of the financial ratio you
calculate to its major competitor. In order to discuss your observations meaningfully, don’t forget to
comment on any trends in the “target” and “competitor” firms’ performance. Please use the written
disclosures in the report to discuss more about why changes occurred on a year-to-year basis for “target” and
“competitor” firms. Identify any strengths or weaknesses you find in the “target” and “competitor” firms.
The due date for the written report is June 24, 2024. Please include the following in the
submission of the project:
Cover and contents pages.
Do not exceed a total of 10 pages.
Make sure you answer all the questions and prepare your report based on the instruction.
Organization and completeness will count.
Be sure that the project is professional in appearance. A reader friendly report is always a good idea!
Note: I am not looking for a “perfect” report/assignment. The project will be graded based on effort. -

“Analyzing Exchange Rate Data for the Mexican Peso and US Dollar” “Effects of COVID-19 Quarantine on Exchange Rates: An OLS Regression Analysis”
Use the dataset here Download the dataset herefor this question.
The data set has,
EXRATE: the exchange rate for the Mexican Peso (pesos per dollar), the value for the rate is taken at the end of the month
LAGEXRATE: the lagged exchange rate
MXINFL: the Mexican inflation rate
USINFL: the U.S. inflation rate. The observations run from January 2015 to December 2020. There is also a trend variable, T, which is 1 in the first period and increases by 1 each period. The file also has a column indicating the year and another indicating the month.
Details on the data sources will be available with the key.
a) Construct a histogram of the exchange rate. Use the option breaks=5. Based on the histogram (i) the data are highly left skewed (ii) the data are highly right skewed (iii) the distribution is approximately uniform (iv) the distribution is approximately bell shaped.
[ Select ] [“(i)”, “(iv)”, “(ii)”, “(iii)”] .
b) Now construct a histogram of the exchange rates before 2020. That is, exclude the last 12 observations from your graph. Does your graph for the pre 2020 observations have the same basic appearance as for the entire data set?
[ Select ] [“No, the graphs are noticeably different”, “Yes, the graphs are similar.”] .
c) Create a new variable that is the difference in the inflation rates. Take the Mexican inflation rate and subtract the U.S. inflation rate to get the difference. Find the summary statistics for this new variable. What is the mean for this variable?
[ Select ] [“0.1106”, “0.086”, “0.0782”, “0.0954”] .
d) Other things equal, if country A has persistently higher inflation than country B we expect that country A’s currency will depreciate. That is, country A’s currency will buy fewer units of country B’s currency over time. Regress the exchange rate on the lagged exchange rate and the difference in the inflation rates. Are the results consistent with previous sentences in part (d)? That is, do the estimated coefficients have the signs implied by the previous statements about inflation and currency depreciation? Reminder: the exchange rate is specified as Pesos/Dollar.

e) Conduct a test for autocorrelation. The test leads you to the conclusion that the errors are
[ Select ] [“correlated”, “not correlated”] .
f) If you conclude that the errors are correlated use the Cochrane-Orcutt procedure to estimate the coefficient on the difference in inflation rates. If you conclude the errors are not correlated, just report the OLS estimate for the coefficient on the difference in inflation rates. The estimated coefficient is [ Select ] [“0.3652”, “0.3708”, “0.3513”, “0.3431”] .
g) Exchange rates will also fluctuate with trade policy changes. Create a dummy variable (aka indicator variable) for the Trump administration. This will be 1 for November 2016 through October 2020; while the inauguration takes place in January, markets tend to adjust in anticipation of future changes so use the time frame stated. Before November 2016 this variable will be 0 and after October 2020 this variable will also be 0.
Run an OLS regression where EXRATE is the dependent variable and the three explanatory variables are the lagged exchange rate, the difference in the inflation rate and the dummy variable. Based on the signs of the estimated coefficients does it appear that the Trump administration led to a strengthening of the dollar or a weakening of the dollar? Reminder: strong dollar means lots of Pesos per dollar and weak dollar means few Pesos per dollar. [ Select ] [“weaker dollar”, “stronger dollar”] .
h) Create a plot of the exchange rate against time or against a default index in R. That is, create a plot of the exchange rates where the left most value is the exchange rate from the first period and then the values are ordered by time such that the last value, the right most value, is from the last period in the data set. Immediately after creating the plot give the following command to R, abline(v=22.5, col=”red”, lwd=2). This creates a vertical line between the October and November 2016 values. Also, run this line of code, abline(v=52.5, col=”blue”, lwd=2). This creates a vertical line between the February and March 2020 values which are pre and post COVID-19 related quarantine implementations. Suppose you were regressing the exchange rate on the time trend up until before the COVID-19 quarantines; that is, until March 2020. You are no longer including a lagged value in the regression but instead using T as the explanatory variable. Based on the plot you just created choose the best statement. (i) it appears appropriate to include a dummy variable for the Trump administration but not an interaction term (ii) it appears appropriate to include an interaction term but not the dummy variable (iii) it appears appropriate to include both the dummy variable and an interaction term (iv) it appears that neither the dummy variable nor the interaction term belong in the model.
[ Select ] [“(i)”, “(ii)”, “(iv)”, “(iii)”] .
i) Create a dummy variable (indicator variable) for the first four months of the COVID quarantine period. That is, a variable which is 1 for the months of March-June 2020 and 0 for all other months. Regress the exchange rate on the lagged exchange rate, the difference in the inflation rates and the two dummy variables. There are four explanatory variables in your model, one is a dummy for the Trump administration and the other is an indicator for the first 4 months of quarantine. This is an OLS regression.
Do the errors appear to be heteroskedastic? You can use a combination of plots and formal tests to answer this.
[ Select ] [“NO”, “YES”] .
j) Test the hypothesis that the errors are correlated. Use ?=.1 for this test. Do you reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis of independent errors?
[ Select ] [“Fail to reject”, “Reject”] .
k) Based on your regression results does the quarantine appear to have had an impact on the exchange rate?
[ Select ] [“NO”, “YES”] .
l) Using this last model what is the estimated standard deviation of the residual?
[ Select ] [“0.53 dollars”, “0.49 pesos”, “0.87 pesos”, “0.35 dollars”, “0.7 pesos”] .
