Summary of the relevant literature
This is important; the literature supports the seriousness of the topic; and provides evidence of the problem, impact, etc. Sources should be from peer-reviewed literature; try to limit website sources
Development and presentation of the argument
This is your position. For example, if my topic was contaminated water in Flint, Michigan; I might take the position that the Federal Government needs to provide more funds, oversight, etc. to remedy the situation.
Refutation of counterclaims 
Explain briefly, those who have a different perspective/opinion/position about the subject. In the example above, perhaps there are factions of the government that claim that the work is done and there is no need for additional intervention. After you provide two counterclaims, describe why you feel differently. In the case above, “new cases of lead poisoning are emerging since the end of the funding”, etc.
Nursing role in the promotion of the health of the affected population
Self-explanatory; Is it participating in screening? Education? Attending community meetings? Are there any nursing-related organizations that support your actions and/or this issue?
Summary of issue’s relevance to nursing and health
Why as a community of nursing/profession is the issue important? Think of our class, why are environmental issues important to nursing as a profession?
Writing style, use of APA 7th edition 
Self-explanatory
I’d like you all to take a look at and read the American Nurse’s Association’s (ANA) position paper on prevention and cessation of tobacco and other nicotine products.  
However, it struck me that it was a great model for you to use for your paper. While there is NO need to replicate the style, you can see as you read that the writers provided their position…the why. They gave background information. They provided recommendations, not only for policy makers but for nurses.
I hope that if you can find the time, access the ANA website, www.nursingworld.org and find the practice and advocacy section of the website. There’s great information, and I have to say, the content makes me proud to be a nurse!

PRACTICE/ISSUE PAPER
Purpose: This project provides students with the
opportunity to conduct an analysis of a clinical practice issue that has been
observed in clinical preceptorship rotation and present recommendations for
change related to the practice issue.
Guidelines for the Assignment:
1.     Identify
a clinical issue that has been observed during your preceptorship rotation that
you would like to see changed. The practice issue may be one that you have
wondered about how the process came to be a part of nursing practice, whether
there is a better way of conducting something, a controversial policy/procedure
and or legislation, or something you have read about in the professional
journals.
2.     Provide
a clear description of the topic or issue and the history surrounding the topic
you have chosen.
3.     Conduct
a literature review concerning this topic. Clearly identify both sides of the
issue/topic. Describe the evidence that supports the current practice or
policy, as well as the practice change you may like to see, provide your
rationale for the change.
4.     Present
the analysis in a scholarly letter to the appropriate person/agency (2-3 pages
of content maximum with a reference page).
5.     You
will be graded on the clarity of your presentation of the issue, quality of
resources used, depth of analysis, and the coherency of your final argument
with regards to the recommendation for practice.
