“Ethical Dilemma: Female Circumcision and the Role of Relativism in Healthcare” “Challenging Cultural Relativism: The Ethical Dilemma of Female Circumcision”

    Initial Post Instructions
The study of ethics and philosophy is one that brings many different kinds of “thinkers” together. One person’s philosophy on ethics is another person’s philosophy on evil. We will be working this term on constructing personal ethical bases and understanding how ethical codes (both personal and professional) are created and followed.
To start us thinking about the different areas of philosophy and ethics, and how we fit into the different molds or world views, let’s imagine the following scenario:
It is 2019. The federal law banning female circumcision is still under appeal in the courts. You are a nurse assisting a plastic surgeon at a local hospital. The plastic surgeon comes from a country where they practice “female circumcision”. This practice is also sometimes called “female genital mutilation”.
Fire Eyes: Female Circumcision, Written by Soraya Mire, Directed by Soraya Mire, Ethnographer Soraya Mire, Narrated by Carol Christiansen (New York, NY: Filmakers Library, 1995), 57 minutes
You are not a member of the doctor’s culture but reside in a state where this practice is still legal. The plastic surgeon has agreed to perform this practice on a young girl, the daughter of a friend of the surgeon. The friend has authorized the procedure. The girl only knows this is a custom. You did not know that today you would be asked to assist in this procedure. You can refuse to participate (your job may be on the line in the future due to that decision). Or you can assist the surgeon. What ought you to do? We now want to examine the ethical issues involved. To do this, let’s look at the role of relativism, moral truths, and other issues.
For the initial post, address the following questions:
What would a subjective moral relativist say about what this doctor is doing? Do you agree with the subjective moral relativist? Why or why not?
Examine what a cultural moral relativist would say here. Do you agree with the cultural relativist? Why or why not?
Name and evaluate general criticisms of cultural relativism as being the wrong moral approach.
Is there an objective moral truth about any of the possible actions by the nurse and/or doctor in this case? Why or why not?
    Follow-Up Post Instructions
Respond to at least one peer. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification.
    Writing Requirements
    Minimum of 2 posts (1 initial & 1 follow-up)
Minimum of 2 sources cited (assigned readings/online lessons and an outside scholarly source)
APA format for in-text citations and list of references
    Course Outcomes
CO 1: Distinguish between cultural relativism and subjective relativism and assess both as moral approaches including an estimation of whether there are actually absolute moral truths.
RESPOND TO THIS POST FOR A FOLLOW UP POST
    Hello Class and Professor,
In relation to this scenario, the subjective moral relativist could argue that the actions of the plastic surgeon are morally acceptable based on their cultural background and their belief on what is morally “right” or “wrong” simply based off whatever the surgeon says. The perspective of the subjective moral relativist states that morality is subjective and can differ amongst people and specific cultures. Personally, I do not agree with the subjective moral relativist because if their belief is that it doesn’t matter the age of the girls who are getting circumcised as long as they do so which would be a violation of the patient’s autonomy, regardless of their age. This is a very one-sided opinion and perspective. As BBC (n.d.) states, many objections to the practice of genital cutting are concerned with the circumstances in place for when it’s done.
A cultural moral relativist would say the procedure is moral due to cultural society that the girl practices in. As Rachels, S. & Rachels, J. (2023) state, this viewpoint means that one is expected to adhere to the customs of a larger group rather than oneself. I do not agree with this because this also does not allow for autonomy and the girls choice to make her own decision and express her opinion.
General criticisms of cultural relativism being the wrong approach would include the fact that there are no universal standards involved which can lead to violations of human rights. Also, cultural relativism can lead to inconsistency with morals since it suggests that a practice within a culture is morally acceptable even if it contradicts other cultural practices.
The objective moral truth by myself, the nurse, is that ultimately, I would consider that the female circumcision procedure should be decided by the young girl. She should be given a thorough description of the procedure, all it entails, risk factors, and side effects prior to making her decision. That would ensure that autonomy is being practiced. I would not feel comfortable being a part of this procedure for moral and ethical reasons.

Before the course, I struggled to choose which type of research I would do. At first, I believed that my topic was suited for quantitative research. After taking EDUC 915, I knew that would not be the correct choice. I came out of that course confused and thinking that I needed to change my topic. During the duration of this course, I began to feel a little more confident in my research abilities. I was able to find some great sources and I was able to express my facts with detail. I was able to show a lot of knowledge for my research topic and present to the audience in a way that could be understood. I struggled with writing the research design portion of Chapter 3. Overall, I do feel more prepared to be successful in the dissertation process. This class has given me the tools needed to be able to revise the issue that I have had in my research form. It has also given me the ability to take deep dives into research to be able to find the evidence needed to be successful. My concerns in completing the dissertation have nothing to do with my ability as a scholar or a writer. One thing that I realized with this course was that I have a lot of things going on around me. I have a full time job as a SPED teacher that requires an abundance of paperwork. I am a wife and a mother to two elementary age children. I am one of the caretakers for my parents, which both have mobility issues. We also had a few family emergencies mixed into all of this. I am depended on by a number of people. This semester was a wake up call for me about learning to balance life, ask for help or support, or just learn that some things will have to be put on hold for what is important. How I intended to address this situation is to ask for my support from my family and manage my time more wisely. I can not be all things to all people. Mesack Dieudonne
    Student 2:
The rigorousness and extensiveness of a Ph.D. program have significantly intimidated me initially. Unbeknown to me was the level of reading and time consumed to complete assignments with the exquisite details they entail, such as in-depth literature reviews, complex data analysis, and rigorous academic writing standards. I confess to being mortified by it. New intellectual, physical, and social routines were adopted and reinforced to pass classes successfully. Thankfully, those routines become second nature, allowing me to be comfortable with the required intellectual acuteness worthy of the program. Producing a draft of chapter three of my dissertation is an encouraging accomplishment in pursuing a Ph.D., which is a long journey. Previous classes, especially this one, have prepared me to tackle and complete my dissertation. Part of that preparation is the increased confidence level, critical thinking, and writing skills, attainable through each completed assignment, professors’ guidance and comments, and peers’ feedback, which further solidified my progress. While acknowledging progress in that journey, I also understand that preparation is not completed and will never be fully completed. Thus, I am humbly excited to learn as much as possible in the remaining classes. The laboriousness and tediousness aspect of a dissertation demands an even higher commitment to conducting and producing a valid and credible research study, according to the highest known standards. My responsibilities, such as husband and father, teaching and leading pastor, conference speaker, writer, and adjunct professor, and how to handle them all concern me deeply. Addressing this critical concern is essential to be successful in this endeavor. As part of a plan, I am prepared to make significant sacrifices. I intend to limit any speaking engagements significantly, if not declining them all, pause my writing activities, stop teaching for a few semesters, and even reduce my involvement in congregational teaching to focus more on writing my dissertation. These inexhaustive steps will be conducive to gathering much of my focus on the daunting task. Besides sleeping early, when possible, and waking up at midnight to study and write, these reinforced routines will provide a peaceful environment where I can study, write, and be most productive. I cannot afford to be a part-time husband and father to my wife and son, respectively. Therefore, I will seek a balance between my family responsibilities and conducting my research study, which my family and I agreed on before entering the program, as I benefit from their unconditional support.
These established steps, though important, will be unlikely to guarantee a smooth dissertation writing process, as I expect the unexpected. However, I am confident in adapting and adjusting to unforeseen situations. With the help of professors and the dissertation committee, I am sure that any unforeseen challenges can be overcome, ensuring that the dissertation process is completed and adds to the body of knowledge about the phenomenon under study. Assignment will be checked for A/I use and plagiarism.

“The Changing Landscape of Higher Education: Identifying and Addressing Key Issues” Evaluating Academic Writing: A Rubric for Assessment

By the end of this section of the class, we will have read Magdalena Kay’s “A New Course” and watched the movie College Inc. Both of these “texts” deal with the same topic: The changing field of higher education, the problems associated with those changes, and possible solutions to the problem. You will be writing your essay on a specific aspect of higher education, describing a problem and proposing a solution to that problem. etc. You must use information from Magdalena Kay’s article and you may use information from College Inc. as well.
Rather than writing your essay on higher education in general, you are going to want to narrow this topic down considerably. As I wrote above, pick one specific problem associated with higher education today (and, again, it must be a topic that Kay addresses in her article) and focus on that. Some suggestions are
The role of college today (pick one of the choices below):
Is it utilitarian (i.e. for purposes of getting a well-paying job)?
    Is it for moral training?
Is it to make us informed citizens?
    Is it simply edutainment?
    Grade inflation
    The Higher Education Act
Teacher evaluations and the role they play in hiring and promoting
    Student debt
    Financial literacy
    Online learning (duh! 🙂 )
Now, several of the topics above are still too broad to address in a paper of this length, so you’ll need to narrow them down even more. You will also need to conduct more research for whichever topic you have selected.
This essay requires you to summarize, paraphrase, and quote directly from at least Kay’s article. If you wish to use the other class “text,” or outside research feel free to do so but know that you are limited to four texts in total. You are encouraged to do outside research for this essay to support your topic. Please use the Delta College library’s resources.
Since this is a persuasive essay, you will need to develop a thesis, and support your thesis using a well-reasoned argument. Don’t forget that the art of persuasion requires a careful crafting of one’s argument—an argument that keeps its reader (and his or her shaking head) in mind. Down the line, think too about your thesis’s significance: Why is it that what you are arguing and showing is important. Trust me, it is.
What this essay is not is one of those tired compare-and-contrast essays you’ve probably written a hundred times already. The majority of this essay should be comprised of your own ideas supported by research. You are using these texts as springboards for your own argument on this topic rather than relying on them to do the arguing for you.
This paper should be a minimum of 1500 words (not including words on your works cited page) of clear prose, typed, double spaced, ingeniously titled, and page numbered (!). Your essay is due Friday, May 10th.
    Enjoy.

C (21-23.9 points) – The “C” paper acceptably explores the subject, but it lacks depth. The paper shows some errors in sentence structure and grammar.
D (18-20.9 points) – The “D” paper demonstrates below average effort. It does not acceptably explore the subject. The central idea is not well thought out, lacks evidence, and lacks a consistent point of view. Sources used may not be credible and academic, and they are not contextualized and integrated into the overall argument; quotations, summaries, and paraphrases are “dropped” into the paper without being introduced or interpreted. The organization is unclear; paragraphs may have more than one topic and lack topic sentences. The audience is not considered. The paper may fail to meet the requirements of the assignment. The paper shows major errors in sentence structure and grammar.
F (17.9 points and below) – The “F” paper is unacceptable. It does not acceptably explore the subject, lacks a thesis and clear organization, and the paragraphs are not developed. Sources used are not credible and academic, and they are not contextualized and integrated into the overall argument; quotations, summaries, and paraphrases are “dropped” into the paper without being introduced or interpreted. The audience is not considered. The paper fails to meet most of the requirements of the assignment. The major errors in sentence structure and grammar make the paper difficult to follow.

Title: The Wicked Side of Generic Rice: The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Music Education and Rehabilitation

For this assignment you will be writing an argumentative (persuasive) essay based on your chosen argumentative thesis, using credible sources and information to support each of your claims. Include the words generic, rice, and wicked.
Your essay must be at least 5 pages long (double-spaced, not counting the Works Cited page), use at least 10 sources (listed on the Works Cited), and use the MLA format for a documented essay. (Wikipedia is not an acceptable source.) Upload your DRE to the assignment link as a Word document.
Your paper will be run through TurnItIn, which checks for plagiarism and AI. If you use quotes but attribute the sources correctly, this will be acceptable. However, use quotations sparingly, and paraphrase or summarize information from references as much as possible. The essay must reflect your analysis of your chosen topic and be written in your own words.
Use the content you have written for assignments during the semester to populate your essay:
    Please use these 6 sources
