“The Future of Criminal Justice and Human Behavior: A Critique of Sapolsky’s Arguments”
http://www.sackett.net/sapolsky_behave.pdf
At this point in the semester, you have read, written,
and thought much about the vast variety of influences on human behavior that scientists have recorded across many
different scientific disciplines. You have finished Sapolsky’s text, and in the last two chapters
(Chs. 16 & 17), he has laid out two important arguments. First, he has
articulated an argument regarding his view of both the criminal justice system,
and human free will – specifically, what we need to do to reform criminal justice
in light of his position on free will. Second, he has offered his view of the
future of human behavior regarding whether humans progressively move toward our
best behaviors or our worst behaviors.
What you must do is write an essay
that accomplishes two things:
First you must
summarize, in your own words, what Sapolsky has to say in these two main
arguments. His first argument, regarding the future of criminal justice is the
more complex, and is boiled down to three main things. In Part 1, make sure you
clearly summarize all three. Sapolsky’s second argument about his view of the
future of human behavior can be boiled down a little more succinctly, so just
include that in Part 3.
Second, for each of the two arguments he makes, you must articulate your
thoughts in response to his arguments. If you disagree with him, you must
formulate an argument against his argument, supported by at least two pieces of
reputable scientific evidence (that Sapolsky cites in the text, or that you
find in a peer-reviewed journal outside of the text). If you agree with him,
you must formulate an argument in support of his argument, again supported by
at least two pieces of reputable scientific evidence. Again, you will write two
arguments, in support of or in opposition to Sapolsky’s arguments. In Part 2,
you will make your argument about criminal justice reform. In Part 3, you will
make your argument about your view of the future of human behavior. Each argument
must be supported by two pieces of evidence sourced outside of Sapolsky’s text.
I’ve broken these tasks into three parts, because I want you to spend an
equal amount of time and an equal amount of writing on each of those three parts. Do your best to
construct this like a coherent single essay that covers these three main areas. Also, do your best to
format it according to the guidelines of APA style, with no title page or abstract, but with a
references list at the end in APA style. Your essay should be at least 500 and
no more than 750 words.
Questions that your essay will answer
Part 1
We now come to one of the core arguments of the entire book. Sapolsky argues
that science will progressively narrow or eliminate the dominion of free will –
which, by this point, is no surprise. The question is, under those
circumstances, how can the criminal justice system be reformed in a way that
reflects this knowledge? a) Briefly Summarize the three things (easy,
near-impossible, and challenging) that Sapolsky argues should be done.
Part 2
Describe your own thoughts on each (of the three things that Sapolsky
argues should be
done).
Part 3
Make an argument regarding your view of the future of human behavior. a)
Specifically address whether humans are more likely to move toward more of our
best behaviors, or toward more of our worst behaviors. b) Support your argument
with at least two pieces of evidence that are either from the texts assigned
for this class – or evidence that comes from other reputable sources (e.g., peer-reviewed articles, or books like Behave that review the
evidence from such articles and make arguments regarding them).
I have attached a link for the online pdf version of the book “Behave” by Robert M. Sapolsky.
This essay will be based solely on chapters 16 & 17 from that book. Apart from the book, 2
other outside sources are required for this essay. So that means 3 sources in total. Thank
you. -

“Thought Experiments: Using Valid and Sound Arguments to Address Philosophical and Social Issues” “Building Trust in Arguments: An Annotated Bibliography and Self-Assessment of 3-Line Arguments”
his assignment works in tandem with our other assignments.
Overview
Your task is to write a short argument paper that addresses a problem a thought experiment can help us think through.
We want you to build a sound argument, one that is both valid and has true premises. The most interesting arguments are ones that propose imaginative but coherent solutions to questions we don’t have a census on yet. Sound arguments are ones that are both:
Have a valid form
Have premises that are true.
By valid form, all we mean is that the structure of the argument supports the conclusion. We always want to use and be able to show that our claims are true and that they reasonably reflect the best of what we think is going on in the world. Here, you’ll show that by providing citations and telling us why the citation is a good one.
Finally, arguments are not trophies, they are instances of communication between real and thoughtful people. Have that guide your work; imagine your reader is really curious about what you have to say and actually wants to collaborate with you on the problem.
Be curious!
Directions.
1. Think of some interesting philosophical question or social issue this class might help illuminate. You’ll be using one of the many thought experiments from the Choosing a Thought Experiment assignment to frame and reply to the question you select, so make sure they vibe well together.
2. Complete the Annotated Bibliography Entries 1 and 2 Worksheet and Annotated Bibliography Entries 3 and 4 Worksheet assignments to get a basic level of understanding the issues and concerns that your thought experiment might help us think through.
3. Complete Validity of Standard Argument to develop your own solution. (Do not cop out and leave it at “people disagree” or “it’s hard, so… yeah.” levels of analysis. Be bold and make a good and reasoned proposal.)
4. With all the core work out of the way, it is time to write your paper! You need to use the following template:
Paper-Short Argument Template-v.1.0-FA23.09.docxDownload Paper-Short Argument Template-v.1.0-FA23.09.docx
5. With that loaded, watch the video directions:
Required Outline
You will need to use the following structure in your paper. You will be graded on each component.
Components 1-4 are worth 25% of the assignment points.
Introduction
Sketch out what we are talking about and what’s at stake by writing out a few paragraphs that cover the following:
What thought experiment are you using?
What makes it interesting to you?
What area of philosophy or society does the thought experiment help us think about? What themes does the thought experiment address?
What difficulty in philosophy or problem in society do you want to address with the thought experiment?
What is the solution, otherwise known as the conclusion, to your argument?
How does the thought experiment help address the difficulty or problem?
The 3-line argument itself
Now you need to list your argument in what’s known as standard form. This will let us create and verify a valid deductive argument, one that is true any time you plug true premises into. All you’ll have is a three-line argument or a chain of three-line arguments, where you re-use the conclusion of the first argument as a premise in the next.
So, all you need to do is list the
2 premises and
Conclusion
Explanation of Soundness
Pull out your Validity of Standard Argument. In it, you used the chapter from Weston on deductive arguments Download chapter from Weston on deductive arguments.
Write up a paragraph or two explaining how the argument form you used above has the same structure as one of the valid forms he lists. The emphasis is on form and structure, not content. Take note of how the premises and conclusions are worded in each example from Weston.
Explanation of True Premises
The other part of a sound argument is that the premises are true. You have already done the legwork here by completing the Selecting a Thought Experiment, Annotated Bibliography Entries 1 and 2 Worksheet and Annotated Bibliography Entries 3 and 4 Worksheet assignments.
So, your task in this section of the paper is to explain how the reader can trust your premises from your argument.
You will need to cite robustly from the readings here. Remember, you need to convince an uninformed reader that they should accept the claims you make in a three-line argument.
Bibliography
This is a simple list of all sources you touched, thought about, quoted, and referenced while doing this assignment, both the ones listed below and the ones used to support your claims. Alphabetize these by author.
Self-Assessment
Thoughtfully and critically reflect on your work. How good is it? Is it good enough? Is it excellent?
Submission format
You will submit this as a DOCX file[1]

Self and Peer Assessment
You and two peers will assess your work. If there is a broad and reasonable consensus, I’ll go with one or an average of your scores. I may judge a different score is warranted for the final grade.
Criteria to Assess
Is the 3-line argument itself a sound (valid + true premises) argument?
Is the form explained with references to the valid form used?
Is the trustworthiness of the sources both accurate as well as thoughtfully reflected upon?
If this was given to a thoughtful friend of yours, would they learn something?
Here is how I want you to think through assessing work.
Grade Tier Level Notes
A (100%) Excellent This is reserved for work of exceptional quality. Think about the meaningful length, cleverness, critical and sound thinking, carefully examining evidence or reflecting upon claims.
B (85%) Pretty Good Work that goes well beyond merely meeting the requirements. This can be in terms of prose, clarity, wit, depth, extra research, etc
C (74%) Just Fine This is your baseline. Work that meets the requirements and does so reasonably well with sufficient depth to cover the basics of the assignment earns this grade. Make sure there are no major problems.
D (62%) Meh Something is wrong. Most of the work isn’t bad, but there’s a problem. Maybe it is a lot of rhetorical questions in a row, wordy prose, etc.
High F (50%) Doesn’t Cut It Work that gets at the core of the assignment but is incomplete, incoherent, or has multiple significant problems.
Looooow F (0%) Can’t Even Work that is missing, plagiarized, or has extreme problems. -

Developing

The critical appraisal is a formal writing assignment, and you are to submit a formal paper. It needs to both look and sound scholarly. You will need a title page and a reference page, but you do not need an abstract. Your paper will need an introductory paragraph (at least three sentences by definition), the body of the paper which is the appraisal part, and a conclusion (again, at least a three-sentence paragraph). Please note that the introduction should introduce the reader to your document and there should not be much information about the published article in the introduction.
You will use APA format for the title page, headings, citations (citing references in the text), quotations, references, page numbering, font, line spacing, margins, and other items.
You will need to elaborate on each section. Do not just say, “Yes, the title is a good one” or “No, the abstract does not summarize well.” Be specific and give examples as appropriate. It is fine to say that the article’s content does not meet expectations and should have included this, that, and the other. The appraisal needs to address both the strengths and weaknesses of the research report. If information is missing, then say so. -

The Negative Influence of Peer Pressure on Students “The Temptation and Consequences of Peer Pressure: Examining its Impact on Behavior and Self-Esteem”
Peer Pressure
Do you think there are
influencers who may affect a person negatively or positively? There are a lot
of people influence people in so different ways like the close people to us,
such as family, friends and even the society . These people greatly influence
our decisions, thoughts and the way we act in life. One of the biggest
influences is peer pressure. Peer pressure is a silent force capable of
steering individuals toward actions they might otherwise avoid, highlighting
the complex interplay between social desires and personal choices. This
research will shed light on how peer pressure has a negative influence on
students.
First, peer
pressure can make students develop some harmful and bad habits such as bullying
behaviors, drinking alcohol, drugs and cigarettes use and negative body image,
which may cause a lot of harm to others and the surroundings community. Students
may adopt the behaviors of their peers to integrate or be accepted, even if
those behaviors are harmful. According to a study published in Developmental
Psychology: “In adolescence, the presence of peers increases the likelihood of
engaging in risky behaviors such as substance use and dangerous driving”
(Gardner & Steinberg, 2005).
Another
reason why peer pressure has a negative influence on students is that peer
pressure affects students’ self-esteem. Peer
pressure may lead students to be dissatisfied with what they have and to make
frequent comparisons between themselves and their peers, leading to a change in
their behavior, personality and their attempt to please everyone at the expense
of themselves. This can lead to a constant desire to get more or better,
leaving students feeling powerless because they do not have what others have.
Additionally, pressure to conform to peer standards creates feelings of
inferiority, leading students to seek affirmation through material possessions
or accomplishments. To elaborate, psychological pressures can influence
students to seek a certain social status or popularity among their peers,
making them feel nihilistic if they see themselves as not exceeding
expectations. “Peer pressure can significantly impact students’ self-esteem,
often leading to feelings of inadequacy or low self-worth” (Brown, 2012).
On the other
hand, some people believe that peer pressure has more advantages than
disadvantages. To clarify, peer pressure can encourage students to participate
in extracurricular activities and develop new skills. For instance, a student
may join the school band because their friends are also members, and in the
process, discover a passion for music. Another example is a student being
motivated to try out for a sports team because their peers are involved,
leading to improved physical fitness and social skills. A study indicated
that:” Peer pressure is
not always negative. Sometimes, it inculcates new hobbies, habits, attitudes
health conscience or a strong urge to succeed amongst people and where this
happens, it is positive.” (Adeyemi Raphael, 2024). Another study indicated that: “Peer pressure
can contribute to developing students’ communication and teamwork skills,
enhancing their overall social abilities” (Lewis, 2019). Thus, peer pressure
can play a major role in encouraging students to participate in various
activities, highlighting the importance of positive peer influence in
educational environments. However, despite these advantages, I firmly stand by
the position that peer pressure has more drawbacks than advantages.
In
conclusion, peer pressure can have both advantages and disadvantages influences
on individuals, particularly students. While it can encourage participation in
extracurricular activities and enhance the development of new skills, it often
leads to the adoption of harmful behaviors and negatively impacts self-esteem.
The pressure to conform to peer standards can lead to dissatisfaction,
comparison, and a constant desire for more, ultimately affecting students’
sense of self-worth. Thus, while positive peer influences exist, the harmful
effects of peer pressure on behavior and self-esteem outweigh its benefits. -
