Exploring Shakespeare’s Sonnets: Modern Translations, Benefits of Study, and Important Distinctions in Renaissance Literature

For this week’s discussion, address one of the following prompts.
Translation: choose one of the assigned sonnets and demonstrate your understanding of the content by updating the Elizabethan English to the present day: re-write/paraphrase your sonnet into modern English. Your modern translation can be humorous or more literal, and it doesn’t have to rhyme, but either way, it should be a line-for-line rewrite of your chosen sonnet. After providing your rewrite, offer some thoughts on what you’ve learned about Shakespeare’s poetry by writing your own version. Try not to tell classmates beforehand which sonnet you’ve chosen in your main post- just re-write the assigned sonnet of your choice and let classmates try to identify it as the week continues. If no one has guessed your sonnet by the end of the week, you should provide the answer in a reply!
Getting Defensive: What is the benefit of studying Shakespeare, and/or his sonnets, here in the 21stcentury? After all, don’t we have present-day poems and songs that communicate some of the same ideas are more easily understood? Defend the inclusion of Shakespeare in general, and these sonnets in particular, in the curriculum. Then, explain which of these sonnets was your personal favorite, and share a line or two from any of these assigned poems that you think is particularly meaningful or lyrical.
Be the Teacher: After viewing this week’s online learning resources, explain to the class what some of the important distinctions are between Renaissance literature and earlier literature/time periods from weeks 1-7. Your post should include one quotation from any of Shakespeare’s poetry, as well as one quotation from any of this week’s linked online learning resources, with in-text citations and works cited entries as needed.

combination of two or more styles.
    ·
    Where
(region, country, and/or culture) and when did the style originate?
    o
    Examples:
If the building is considered Neoclassical, that style refers to architecture

appearance. And, Neo-Gothic Architecture borrows from the conventions of
    medieval Gothic design.

    ·
    Describe
how it contributes to the architectural character of the city.
    ·
    Discuss,
based on what you’ve learned in the course, why the architects might have

    Some
buildings will have more historical information available than others. When not

more heavily on an exploration of its style and historic buildings of that
style and how they compare to each other.
    ·
    Visit
    as many times as needed.
    ·
    You
may or may not be able to enter the building. It might be helpful to call/email
ahead of your visit to ask if the public are allowed to enter and if there are
any restrictions. For example, you will likely not be permitted to enter the
Scranton Cultural Center or private office building, but buildings like the
Everhart Museum and structures are campus can most likely be entered. It is not
absolutely essential to enter the building, since you can perform a visual
analysis of the exterior, but it is something to consider in advance.
    ·
    Take
lots of photos and include some in your paper. Include captions that either identify
you as the photographer or cite the source of the photo. Use the photos to
illustrate your discussion of the building and its style(s).
    ·
    Always
capitalize the names of architects, styles, and buildings.

    Outline So Far
Architecture Analysis: The Albright Memorial Library

“The Changing Landscape of Tech Work and Tech Workers: From Aristocracy to Activism”

As you know, the Bay Area and Silicon Valley hosts one of the planet’s main concentrations of tech workers and the tech industry (along with other tech hubs, such as Seattle, New York City, Austin, Texas, and Washington, DC). Normally, we assume that tech workers are fabulously well paid with wonderful working conditions in organizations that have egalitarian work cultures, etc. We often think of tech workers as part of the “aristocracy of labor” in terms of pay, benefits and working conditions. But this image has been changing in recent year, so is that still true today (or was it ever true)? What about the “shadow workforces” of big tech companies such as Google and Amazon (often called TVCs—temporary, vendors, contractors)? And why have so many tech workers tried to form unions and engaged in other labor protests in recent years? We’ve seen the first union in big tech in the form of the Alphabet Workers Union (Google’s parent company), as well as unionization campaigns at several smaller tech companies and among video game designers, tech workers in the media (including at the New York Times) and many others. So, why are more tech workers now thinking of themselves as workers who collective representation, rather than as a potential future CEO of the next billion-dollar start up? how are tech work and tech workers changing? Why have we seen walkouts by workers at Amazon, open letters from tech/corporate workers at Starbucks and elsewhere, Google workers and video game designers organizing unions and so on? What kinds of issues are they protesting – both “traditional issues,” such as job security and toxic management cultures, and “non-traditional issues,” such as the companies’ environmental commitments and cooperation with homeland security/immigration services, etc.. And how have companies like Google and others reacted to this upsurge in labor activism among workers in the tech industry? In short, how are both tech work and tech workers changing?

Feel free to pick the side that resonates with you the most or mix and match points from multiple sides to create your argument! Good luck with your essay!
    I
1 Before we build a Working Bibliography, we MUST commit to a topic. When we commit to a topic, then we CANNOT change it. (If you do change it without my expressed permission, I reserve the right to take points away from the Working Bibliography and subsequent assignments since those points would be going to a topic with which you are no longer exploring. — What is my advice? Choose your topic wisely!) You do not have to know your thesis yet, but you need to explicitly state the topic. I will not give points to this assignment until I have a record of your topic. (Most of you have already chosen good topics. I am open to you changing UNTIL we turn in the Working Bibliography; by then, we have committed to a topic.)
This is what I want: The title of this assignment will be your TOPIC. Your topic will be clearly stated as the title of the page for this assignment: This means it will be centered and below your name, my name, class name, and date.
2 Below the topic you will type these words: Working Bibliography. (What is a Working Bibliography? I will define it. (I expect you to read the definition.) A Working Bibliography is an MLA formatted list of the sources (eBooks from the school databases, database articles, websites) that you have found at this point in your research. These sources might be used in the paper; perhaps, they might not be used in the paper; some of them may be used; others will not be used. Later, it will be your choice whether or not the sources you find now or sources you find later will be used in the paper. But the list shows that you are actively looking for sources NOW and have found sources, and the Working Bibliography shows that you know how to put those sources in MLA format. (I expect excellent MLA format: It is merely following a model; it is easy to do if you train your eye and mind to see in detail.) In other words, this assignment gets you started on your paper by finding sources NOW and documenting that search NOW, instead of waiting until the last minute. (Remember, writing is a process.)
3 What sources and how many? You are required to find 10 sources! You must find 2 eBooks, 5 database articles or essays, 3 websites. They will be listed in MLA format which also means they will be listed alphabetically. (Yes, that is more than the eight sources needed for the final draft of the research paper. As it should be — so that you have options and choices.) Points off for MLA formatting errors. This is an opportunity to practice getting the MLA format correct. If you don’t list eBooks from the school databases, expect a very bad grade. (To be clear, you are restricted by the Working Bibliography. If later, you find other or even better sources, you are free to use them.)
4 The assignment will look something like this:
    Your name
    My name
    Class name
    Date
