  • Evaluating the Seven Principles of Sound Public Policy in Action: A Case Study of the Minimum Wage Debate Evaluating the Seven Principles of Sound Public Policy in Action: A Case Study of the Minimum Wage Debate

Our cornerstone project details are as follows:
Each week you have explored the Seven Principles of Sound Public Policy in your break-out groups — one at a time.
Now you are asked to choose a single current public policy issue (i.e. minimum wage, social security, welfare, etc.) to evaluate in depth. You will explore the issue using each of the Seven Principles of Sound Public Policy -and provide your analysis of each principle as it pertains to the public policy issue you chose. You have the option to present your evaluation via a formal paper or a video presentation via uploading it to YouTube and emailing me the link. A solid paper will do the following:
Introduce and summarize the topic you chose
What problem is it trying to solve
Who are the “winners” and “losers”
How long has it been enacted
What changes have been made to improve it/fix issues with it over the years
What costs (financial or otherwise) has it incurred
Evaluate the proposal based on the Seven Principles of Sound Public Policy
Analyze all 7 principles individually as they pertain to the policy issue
Discuss how the policy issue meets or fails to meet the standard set by each of the seven principles
Draw conclusions as to how effective the policy is based off of how well it adheres to each of the issues
    Conclusion
A robust conclusion summarizing the policy issue and determining whether it is effective at solving the problems it is intended to address.
If you choose to write a final paper, your paper must be written in size 12 font, double spaced using proper spelling and grammar. It must be your own, original work and follow APA citation guidelines. All sources must be cited. Use of AI/ChatGPT is not allowed. Suggested length is 3-5 pages but more importantly is that you cover all the content listed above.
If you choose to make a video presentation, it needs to be conducted in a professional manner (professional speech, professional attire, clean background (blank wall, desk, or some other non-distracting setting)). Your presentation needs to cover each of the criteria above in an organized, clear and coherent manner. You are welcome to jazz it up with PowerPoint or media enhancements but your face and your voice must appear on screen. I suggest videos are no longer than 15 minutes long but there is no minimum length requirement. Again, most important is that you cover all the content listed above.
Your goal in this assignment is to demonstrate your knowledge of the Seven Principles of Sound Public Policy while proving your ability to think critically about a public policy issue.

  • Title: Analyzing the Communication Patterns of the Kardashian Family

    I will upload all instruction
    Experiential Learning Activity #3
The purpose of this assignment is to understand, explore, and reflect upon the ways in which families are portrayed through popular media. This assignment will give you the opportunity to write about one of your favorite famous families (whether they’re fictional or not) and apply concepts from class to the media you consume.
    Directions:
    Part 1 – Planning
For this assignment, please identify one famous family to analyze. This famous family can be real (e.g., the Kardashians) or fake (e.g., The Simpsons). Once you’ve chosen who you’d like to analyze, please find a video clip of them interacting. This clip will serve as the example you draw your analysis from.
    Part 2 – Thinking
While you watch this famous family, consider the following questions:
What communication techniques does this family use and are they effective?
What communication pattern does the family you chose engage in? Describe with examples.
Is this an effective style for the family? Why or why not?
As someone who is a fan of the famous family, what contextual factors do you need to understand to make sense of your chosen clip? For example, if you picked a clip of a family fighting, you might want to explain what they’re fighting about.
What recommendations do you have for this family? That is, how can they improve their communication with each other?
Part 3 – Writing and Submitting
Review the rubric embedded into Blackboard and the Document Formatting Guidelines [DOCX]. – Alternative Formats
Your writing should be carefully structured, edited, and proofread.
The recommended 500-750 word count of your essay does not include your name, your instructor’s name, or the assignment title on the first page and reference(s) at the end of your assignment.
You may exceed 750 words if necessary.

  • Integrating Quotes in Writing Integrating Quotes: Enhancing Argument and Credibility

Write a few sentences (about 100 words) integrating a quote that you will be using in your paper. You can cite from the articles you will be using or you can cite from the novel itself for this activity. Be sure to connect your quote to the rest of your sentences. You can do this via signal phrases (“Smith argues” OR “According to Smith,” etc) or by integrating your quote as it grammatically fits into your sentence. Document your quote by using the MLA in-text citation guidelines you have studied in this lesson.
When you are done posting your response, reply to at least one classmate in no fewer than 75 words. Comment on how effectively they have integrated a quote.
Here is an example to help guide your response:
    John: Hi everyone,
Here is my paragraph with the quotes I integrated into it:
On Sula’s deathbed, she expresses to Nel her thoughts about the lifestyles and conditions of the women in Medallion. “You think I don’t know what your life is like just because I am not living it? I know what every colored woman in this country is doing.” Even though Nel wants Sula to settle down and have children, Sula takes pride in her choice not to conform. “Dying just like me. But the difference is they dying like a stump and I’m going down like one of those redwoods. I sure did live in this world.” Sula says everybody’s life is a journey to death, yet she believes her course to be nobler than that of her peers. She knows she is living her authentic self, and she does not live for appearances.
Emily: Hello, John. I think you did a great job on your paragraph. I think the quote can be put into the sentence by using commas and introductory phrases. This can help tie together your argument and the quote so that it flows. Also, cite the author and let the reader know what page you are talking about. Your essay seems like it is going to be very good!
Professor: John, this is a good point about Sula and her desire to live authentically. Emily makes a good observation. You haven’t integrated your quote into your discussion, and you haven’t cited the page numbers from the novel. To integrate the quote, you need punctuation and signal phrases. Here is an example of how to integrate and cite from the novel:
On Sula’s deathbed, she expresses to Nel her thoughts about the lifestyles and conditions of the women in Medallion: “You think I don’t know what your life is like just because I am not living it? I know what every colored woman in this country is doing” (Morrison 93). Even though Nel wants Sula to settle down and have children, Sula takes pride in her choice not to conform. She continues by telling Nel that the women of Medallion are “[d]ying just like me. But the difference is they dying like a stump and I’m going down like one of those redwoods. I sure did live in this world” (Morrison 93). Sula says everybody’s life is a journey to death, yet she believes her course to be nobler than that of her peers. She knows she is living her authentic self, and she does not live for appearances. Link to novel : https://s3.amazonaws.com/scschoolfiles/112/sula-to…

    Question 1:
Case 1: Dr. M researched and established preliminary data but never published these findings. Subsequently, Dr. M left the home institution to take a position in another area. Her original work, however, remained with the home institution. Other postdocs built on her findings—some of which were in error, due to some technical issues which they resolved—and published her data and their own. She, Dr M, felt that she should have been recognized; even listed as a coauthor.
What is your opinion and why?
Case 2: Dr. J and Dr. Z (the former a microbiologist and the latter a biochemist) cooperated on a new medication. Dr. J published the article listing both their names with his own first in his microbiology journal. Dr. Z tweaked the data and findings, but in no way falsified, and published in a biochemistry journal but listed himself first in the authorship listing. Was Dr. Z plagiarizing or out of order? Why or why not?
Case 3: Dr. N has not been adhering to the clear protocol approved by the University’s IRB. When an undergraduate student reports this, the undergraduate is failed by Dr. N, despite clearly adequate performance in their research individual study, with Dr. N.
Should Dr. N be penalized as having committed research misconduct, and if so, how?

What punishment do you think would be appropriate for research misconduct?
Why would scientists plagiarize or falsify data?Discussion thread of at least 125 words
Journal Entry: What is Ethics? Required to write a Journal Entry about the Discussion. In the entry, you will summarize what was discussed in your own words, talk about the topics, and provide novel insight gained from the discussion.

    Question 2
    Case 1
Tay-Sachs Case: You discover that your child is suffering from Tay-Sachs. He will die in a couple of years. Do you let him die naturally, aggressively treat him, or opt for experimental treatment? What do the principles say is the morally correct thing to do?
    Case 2
Deaf Culture Case: People who are deaf often do not view their deafness as a disability. They see it as a unique feature of their culture, one with a sophisticated language and set of cultural symbols. A married deaf couple had a child with partial hearing in one ear, and though the physicians want to perform a surgery to repair the ear so the child can hear, the parents refuse. Should the physicians seek to do the surgery anyways? Are the parents wrong for refusing to “treat” their child’s “ailment?” Should the physician leak the story to the press . . . if the parents continue to say “no?” Is the child impaired? Make sure you explain your answers.

    Making Babies Easy

Some impaired infants have normal human life spans, though they require substantial care and treatment. In some cases, physicians/surgeons perform procedures to making raising these impaired infants easier. For instance, hormone treatments can make a child smaller, which makes them easier to care for; a uterus can be removed to prevent menstrual discomfort and pregnancy, and breast buds removed to prevent breast growth. Even though such procedures prevent pain and discomfort, and probably allow for a better treatment, are they morally justified?
    Case 4
“Assigning Value to Life”: A malnourished, impoverished mother in a distant country in Africa is widowed, but finds herself expectant. She already has 5 children. Should she have an abortion, since this may well be a high-risk pregnancy or not?
Case 5: The elderly (74 year old) cancer patient with metastatic disease including brain mets, causing some decreased mentation, but without a living will, is no longer eating. The family is divided: some requesting you insert a PEG, or at the least an NG tube, and others requesting no interventions. What will you do/advise?
Discussion: Image of God (discussion thread of at least 125 words)
Five Case Studies from Chapter 2 in the text (These evaluations will follow the format as per page 11. This will be the protocol required for every case in each chapter.)
When do you think human life begins? Why? Journal Entry: Image of God Required to write a Journal Entry about the Discussion. In the entry, you will summarize what was discussed in your own words, talk about the topics, and provide novel insight gained from the discussion.
