  • African American Literature: Exploring Themes and Movements since 1746

    The student shall be able to write a structured paper that incorporates research and engages in an analysis of the literary movement, author, or text(s) within African American literature since 1746.
    Instructions:
    For your Final Paper, you will write about a topic of your choosing related to the following eras in African American Literature:
    1746-1865 (Spirituals, Slave Narratives)
    1865-1940 (Reconstruction Era, Harlem Renaissance)
    African American Literature since 1940 (Civil Rights, Black Arts, Contemporary Writers)
    Your essay may focus on a particular theme or time period, or you may present an original critical argument that either challenges or supports a philosophy or point of view presented by 2-3 of the assigned authors.  **Note that whatever topic you choose, the primary texts for your argument must be what was assigned in the course for discussions. Your essay must include direct references to the assigned material. DO NOT USE BACKGROUND READINGS OR OUTSIDE SOURCES.

    The Role of Religion in Slavery (Douglass, Jacobs)
    The Desire for Freedom (All assigned slave narratives, King)

    Now read Estelle Erasmus’s “How to Resist the Temptation of AI When Writing” (PDF attached) and produce Evidence Lists listing the interesting words, new words, synonyms, patterns and contrasts you find in that article. Aim for the same level of effort detailed in the example from our text: 7-10 interesting words, 7-10 definitions of new words, 7-10 lists of synonyms and/or patterns, and 7-10 contrasts. Once you have completed and reviewed your lists, select two pieces of evidence you believe to be most important and compose your Observational Paragraph.     For this assignment, you will craft an argument on your views around modern acts of
    heroism. Why might heroism matter in the modern world? Why might it not? Is heroism
    overrated? Have we moved beyond the heroic life? These are some of the questions you might
    consider when crafting your thesis statement.
    This essay requires you to use a minimum of two sources that we read in class (do not use one
    that you have already written a paper on) and to research at least two additional scholarly
    sources to support your argument. You must use the university library, local library, or Google

    the concepts you are discussing.

     You must have four sources. Two must come from your class readings and two must be

     Must include a properly cited work cited page.
     Your essay should have an original title.
     Your essay must be in MLA format.
     The paper must be 6-7 pages, typed, double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font,
    with page numbers.
     Draft Outline must include (full intro with thesis, 3-4 topic sentences with 3-4 pieces of
    supporting evidence)
     Both draft outline and final drafts must be submitted through plagiarism software built
    in to our online platform submission window for credit.
     AI should not be used to generate material for this essay, although it might be used in
    order to revise for grammar and punctuation. You may also use AI to ask for feedback.

    Compose a four-page essay centered on the book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol S.
