  • Title: Exploring the Effectiveness of a Community-Based Intervention for Reducing Childhood Obesity in Low-Income Neighborhoods: A Preliminary Research Proposal

For this project, you will be writing a preliminary research proposal.
Your proposal must be for a study that would examine the impact of a public health or medical intervention, such as exploring the question “Is ____ {intervention/exposure} an effective method for preventing/treating ____ {outcome/disease} in ____ {population}?”  The project must be for primary research (either an observational or an experimental study design).  You must explain your goals, the significance of the proposed project, and the methods you would use to collect your data.
You must carefully follow the formatting rules on the next page.  The proposal will require a project summary, a background, a statement of the study’s objectives, a methods section (which should discuss recruiting, data collection, and data analysis), a researcher CV, and a proposed budget and timeline.
A cover page that includes only (1) a project title, (2) the name of the principal investigator (P.I.), and (3) a one-paragraph summary of the proposed research project.
    □  A background (1 page) that includes:
    □  an opening statement about the main study question, including a very brief
description of the proposed study population (including its location),
intervention, and disease that will be evaluated
    □  a short literature review (approximately five pages with in-text citations to at least 8-10 references) that
explains how the proposed project is related to previous studies and what will
    make it new and important
    □  a list of at least  8-10 references cited, which should be listed at the bottom of
the page in size 12 font using APA format
    □ Research project’s statement objectives: one main statement of purpose plus three to four specific aims.  The list can be in bullet-point format and can be phrased in the form of the questions that will be answered or as “to” statements (such as “The specific aims are to identify / to compare / to evaluate _____.”).
    □  A description of the methods (3 pages) that provides details about the proposed source population, sampling strategy, and recruiting strategy; ethical considerations (such as informed consent, benefits, and risk mitigation); data collection methods such as the use of a questionnaire, interviews, biological specimen collection, observation, and other techniques); and proposed data analysis methods.
    □  A detailed and realistic timeline for completing the work should cover the entire scope of the plan from the preparation stages through the publication and presentation of results.
    □  A budget should itemize all expenses expected for the project (such as travel expenses, equipment, salaries for support staff, etc.).  For this project, the requested budget should not exceed $10,000.
    □  A short (1 page) c.v. (curriculum vita) Alternatively, a resume for the primary researcher lists relevant information about education, work and research experiences, and skills.

  • “Lessons Learned from Past Disasters: A Case Study of Emergency Management in [chosen event]”

As you study the evolution of emergency management you will come across references to real disaster situations and how emergency management responded to handle such events.  Much can be learned about the discipline through such case studies. As such, I would like you to write a paper in APA format (10-15 pages double spaced not including the title, abstract, or reference pages) on a particular emergency or disaster situation from the list below that has occurred in the United States and describe the “lessons learned”.  Using these lessons, I would like you, at the end of the paper, to identify viable ways that key lessons could be implemented so agencies handle future incidents better and do not repeat mistakes made on the identified incident. The paper will be due at the end of week 6 and should include:
    1)  A review of current literature on the particular emergency or disaster to include citations from your textbook and a minimum of three other publications,
    2) An introduction that includes the background of the event,
    3) A description of the “lessons learned” from the event ,
    4) Your analysis of how such a situation (or the impact of such a situation) can be prevented in the future or how the response to a similar emergency or disaster that occur in the future can be improved upon. This should include how principles learned during the class from your textbook could be applied (such as use of the N.R.F., N.I.M.S., etc.)
    5) Identify viable ways of implementing lessons learned solutions on future incidents.
Structure a real argument and tell a real story. A research paper is not merely a collection of internet articles and book citations you dug up and put down on paper, it is the way you weave all of that into a story that convinces the reader that you know what the story is and understand how improvement in future such situations can be made.
    Format: APA
    Topic Choices:
    1) MOORE, OK tornado of 2013
    2) HURRICANE MICHAEL – 2018
    3)  CALIFORNIA “CAMP” FIRE OF 2018
    4) NEW MADRID EARTHQUAKE OF 1811 – While this event occurred in the 1800’s, there is a big concern that we may be close to having another event in this area. The threat is real enough that response exercises have been held recently to prepare for another earthquake. If you choose this topic, other more current earthquake strike information may be utilized too.

Choose a planning neighborhood in the City of Buffalo and create a “pre-planning” neighborhood profile that would set the stage for a place-based planning effort. The assignment is not to determine a plan for a neighborhood, but to provide context for guiding a neighborhood-based planning effort. For this project, students will:
●Describe the location of the neighborhood.

○Pre-planning plan, list of locations to take photos
●Describe sub-areas and uses within the neighborhood as appropriate.
●Use primary and secondary information to create a list of possible neighborhood considerations.
●Identify neighborhood-based constituents (organizations, institutions, public officials, community groups, etc.) and key contacts that would be important to engage in the planning effort.
●Where will the community’s role in the planning process fall on the spectrum of community engagement? Describe methods to gather additional community input. What resources will the community need to fulfill this role? What will
be your obligations to the community in return?
