1. Reflect on what you, personally, have learned from our course.
Personally I learned how the world views me as a young black woman. I also learned how deep inequalities go.
2. How does this apply to your own life or world view?
Learning about the work place, health care system, and education system it makes me look at the foundation differently and how things are unfair.
3. Were you specifically surprised by any concepts or course content?
Yes, the two attached sources surprised me and all the facts.
4. What made you think about inequality differently? Be specific.

“Exploring Mental Health in Student-Athletes: A Content Analysis of Various Resources”
This assignment I already kind of started, my topic I chose is Mental health in Student-Athletes. I have to do content analysis for the resources chosen. I don’t think there is a certain amount of resources I have to have but I need a lot of information from either websites, media posts, Scholarly articles, etc. I’ve attached the assignment and the doc that I had some work on, it’s bad but I rushed but I guess just to get an idea what the assinment is. It’s messy too.

“Developing a Defensible Research Proposal: A Comprehensive Study on [Topic]”
SOC 214 – Research Methods in Sociology
Spring 2024
Guidelines for Final Project Write-Up
Individual Research Project and Presentation
Approximately 5-7 double-spaced pages. This will include the cover page, references page, and
another other appendices (for example, a copy of survey questions, a list of qualitative interview
questions, etc.).
The major deliverable for students in the course is the final project, which is a comprehensive
research proposal and design. Students are expected to develop a defensible research proposal of
their own—either qualitative or quantitative—that includes the following elements:
a) IDENTIFYING A RESEARCH PROBLEM:
Clear problem statement and rationale for the study
b) RESEARCH QUESTION:
Specific research question(s) that address the topic under study.
c) LITERATURE REVIEW:
Selective review of relevant literature, related theory, and research studies. Choose at
least four (4) research articles.
d) METHODOLOGY:
In-depth description of data collection and data analysis; that is, answer the where,
what, when, how, etc. (What methodology will you be using to conduct the study?
Will you use a survey or do an ethnographic study? What are the selection criteria for
your participants? and so forth). Provide a full description of your general research
design, as well as the specific methods and procedures used in your research project.
The methodology should be sufficiently detailed so that it can be replicated. If you
are following a methodological approach developed by others, cite the relevant
studies. Provide diagrams, charts, and illustrations as appropriate for your discipline.
List the instrumentation you used and provide a diagram of the experimental setup.
Discuss the types of sources you will use (primary or secondary texts, interviews,
surveys, personal notes, etc.).
Explain the details of your methods. For example: how you made measurements; the
concentrations and amounts you used; how you selected your research subjects;
psychological tests used; a copy of your survey questionnaire; an explanation of
statistics used; a definition of your focus in terms of historical period or framework;
etc.
Describe how you will conduct your data analysis (relevant to your methodological
approach – statistical analysis via software program, coding software program for
qualitative research, etc. -
Title: Examining Racial Hierarchy in the United States: Mapping the Terrain and Exploring Alternatives
The topic I chose is number 2 found in the “Final Paper Guidelines” pdf which is racial
hierarchy: Sociologists have attempted to map the racial terrain of the US using hierarchical models. What do these models do well? What do they miss? Should we continue to use them? If yes, why? If not, what alternatives can we use to understand race and ethnic relations?
I have no preference of how you choose to approach this paper, just nothing controversial
and make it acceptable for the class. I attached all of the class readings so please choose
10 to use in the paper to fulfill the requirement of sources from the course readings as asked for in the guideline I attached. The other remaining 10 sources should come from peer reviewed sources. Find any that are appropriate for the paper. Please do not count the title and
reference page towards because the minimum for the essay is 8 pages not including those. -

The Essential Concepts of Sociology: Understanding the Discipline Through Power and Political Systems.
Each paper must be typed, double spaced, 12 font, include your own original title (not the title of this paper assignment). Your name and the course information should appear on the first page of your paper.
**No Plaragism and AI**
For this assignment you will write a brief paper on what sociology is. Specifically, as a result of taking this course how would you describe sociology to someone who has never taken a sociology class. You will need to incorporate specific concepts and ideas that would support your explanation and understanding of the discipline.
Paper Specifics:
Paragraph 1: Introduction AND you will need to first give a description of what sociology is to you based on being in this class.
Paragraph 2-4: Next, you will choose THREE main concepts that you feel best describes the goals of sociology. Some examples could be social forces, culture, power, social structure, inequality/stratification or the sociological imagination. You may choose other main theories and/or ideas.
In a separate paragraph for each chosen concepts, you will need to describe your three chosen concepts and provide analysis as to why they are essential to the discipline. If you need more paragraphs for each concept that is fine, but you should have a minimum of 3 topical paragraphs.
Make sure you reference your text and/or lecture ONLY to support your theories and claims within the paper: proper citations are a must!
Paragraph 5: You will need a nice conclusion paragraph to wrap things up.
Note: You may write in the first person for this assignment (“I”).

Political Systems- Political systems are the institutions that regulates the use of and access to the power that is essential to articulating and realizing individual, local, regional, national and global interests. There are 3 major types: Democratic, totalitarianism and authoritarianism
Democratic- citizens have direct participation done by free and fair elections and equality in the voting process.
Totalitarianism- has a single ruling party led by a dictator, an unchallenged ideology, a system of control to stop opposition and control over the media and economy and many communist principles apply: Soviet Union, China and Nazi Germany are all examples of this.
Authoritarian- A single person, group or social class holds all the power. There is no vision or ideology of a perfect society, just the leader’s free will to exert his power, laws, values and ideology. They usually gain power by help of outside sources.
Power
Power is the probability that the individual can achieve his or her will despite another’s opposition. Power from the sociological sense comes in three various ways: authority-traditional, charismatic and legal rational.
Authority-traditional- power is based on traditional monarchy or birth right.
Charismatic leader- power is based on leadership that comes from personality, persuasion and ability to rally those behind them. Examples of charismatic leadership can be both positive and negative. Hitler and Dr. Martin Luther King were both considered to be charismatic leaders.
Legal rational- system of rules and regulations to give formal authority. The U.S. bases our power off of the legal rational system (although some of these leaders like Bill Clinton and Donald Trump have characteristics from charismatic leadership). This authority and power is based off of elections or codified procedures to grant authority.
