  • Title: Understanding Maternal Mortality: Examining Social Factors and Interventions

For Part 1 of my Final Project, I will be focusing on the global health issue of maternal mortality. Maternal mortality refers to the death of a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, or within 42 days after the termination of pregnancy, regardless of the duration and location of the pregnancy (inside or outside the uterus), from any cause that’s related to or furthered affected more by the pregnancy or the way it’s managed.
As a woman myself, this issue is important and concerning because it reflects the health and well-being of women as well as serves as a crucial indicator of the overall status of maternal health care systems worldwide. However, I aim to explore domestically the aspects of maternal mortality, by examining disparities in access to maternal healthcare services, how socioeconomic factors impact maternal health outcomes, and how effective various interventions and policies are in addressing this ongoing issue. Furthermore, I will delve into the cultural, political, and structural determinants that shape the discourse surrounding maternal mortality. I will be asking questions like “ How do structural factors such as healthcare accessibility, socioeconomic status, and geographic location impact maternal health outcomes worldwide?”.
For part 2 of the project this is what YOU will have to do: For part 2 of your final project, you will need to conduct some secondary research and provide some context and background for your health/illness issue. There are two parts to this, and you can organize your part 2 write up in any way you choose, but it must have the following elements:
Report 5 facts about your issue and provide references for where you acquired that factual information. To continue with our ADHD example, you might state that despite scientists’ believing that ADHD has genetic as well as environmental causes, no genes have yet been identified as causing ADHD (p.108 in Rose Weitz, 2013. The Sociology of Health, Illness, and Health Care. Wadsworth.). You can start with a google scholar web search for your issue and see where it leads you, or you can begin by consulting one of the authoritative and reputable sources, such as the CDC, the NIH, or the WHO and gather your factual information there. You can also use your textbook as a starting point and for a reference for 1 or 2 of your facts, but not all. And then of course, you can use your library resources to conduct your background research.
For each of the 5 facts, you need to write a short, 1 paragraph interpretation of the fact through the sociological lens. Remember C.Wright Mills and the sociological imagination? For each of the findings that you are reporting, you need to move beyond the individual, physical, epidemiological, or medical fact and reflect on the idea that your fact has major social causes or consequences. Again, to continue with our ADHD example, the fact that no genetic marker for the disease has been identified yet, could mean, for example, that the ADHD diagnosis is symptom-based and thus more arbitrary, which, in turn, means that one could be easily misdiagnosed, that diagnosis can be disputed, or that there are alternative, non-genetic causes for the illness and so on.

Short paper based on the documentary – “Where to invade next?”
    Your task:
Watch “Where to invade next” and read chapter 3 (Culture).  Also review material regarding chapter 3 posted on CANVAS.  Your task is to analyze this documentary and write a short essay.  Michael Moore visits nine countries.  In each country he picks up one value to examine difference between American society and the country he was visiting.  For example, in Norway, prison system was based on the value of “rehabilitation” (not revenge).  This value guides every aspect of incarceration. Use the concepts presented in chapter 3 to write this paper.  Please make sure that the following prompts are addressed in your paper.
    Prompts:
1.Define the concept of culture (use the textbook definition) and discuss how this documentary has explored the concept of culture (5 points)
Define the concept of Value (use the textbook definition). In each country visited in the documentary, one value is discussed. Your task is to compare and contrast values of the following two countries with corresponding values in the US — for example prison system in the US as compared to Norway(20 points)

    c. Formal and informal norms in Tunisia (give definitions and examples of these concepts)
    4. If you were to bring values related to education in Finland back to the US, will it work? Explain why it will/ or why it will not work(5 points)
    5. Conclude the analysis by using the concept of “cultural relativism” – is it fair for Michael Moore to judge American society by standards of other culture? (5 points)
Guidelines for a 4-5-page double spaced(Minimum) paper : Rubric for grading
Introduction: Start with the concept of culture and clearly state how you are going to use this documentary to understand cultural differences between US and other countries.  Please be focused on the concept of culture (not politics or any other aspect).   Please do not copy and paste summary – it will not work because your focus must be on culture.
2.Body of the paper: prompts 2-4
    3.Conclusion:  prompt 5
Make sure that the short paper is well written.  Pay attention to language, spelling and grammar.

  • “Debating the Social Construction of Reality and Power: A Critical Analysis of Contemporary Sociological Theories”

There are two questions for this exam, each listed below. You must answer both questions. Both essays
will be graded separately. There is a 1,000-word limit per essay (approx. 3 pages each [6 pages total for the
entire exam], Times New Roman, double spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins). Any materials submitted
past the 1,000-word limit will not be graded.
Be sure to cite any and all sources you use for your paper, including course lectures or texts. If you use any
outside materials, be sure to include a bibliography page. If you use only course materials there is no need
to submit a bibliography page. I consider plagiarism (any unattributed borrowing of another person’s words
or ideas) to be a very serious academic offense. Any plagiarism will result in an automatic “F” for the
exam, so make sure you cite all your sources for both paraphrasing and quotes and that your essays
    represent your own original work.
    Question #1:
According to a contemporary theory legend, in the summer of 1984, Edward Said, R.W. Connell, Peter
Berger & Thomas Luckmann all found themselves in Paris for separate conferences. After a long day of
theorizing about the nature of society, they all happened to converge on the exact same Parisian bar, “Le
Disneyland” owned by none other than Jean Baudrillard. Copious amounts of French wine were consumed
as the cohort of theorists discussed their own ideas on the social construction of reality into the early
    morning hours…
Detail Berger & Luckmann’s phenomenological conception of the social construction of reality and then
consider how either Said, based on his concept of “Orientalism” or Connell’s theories on Masculinities
(you can chose which of the theorists passed out drunk in a corner and was not able to continue the
discussion) work as potential critiques to Berger & Luckmann’s general theory. As a conclusion, consider
how Baudrillard, still completely sober because he’s been the bartender, would critique all of their theories
on the social construction of reality with his conception of “hyper-reality.”
    Question #2:
In a bid to gain greater symbolic capital amongst the intelligentsia, Tyra Banks has radically altered her
reality TV show “America’s Next Top Model,” into a significantly more popular edition, “Sociology’s
Next Top Theorist” where theorists compete for a cover shot and photo spread in the American Journal of
Sociology, taken by noted photographer, Nigel Barker, as well as a $500,000 MacArthur “Genius” Grant.
The final challenge is for the remaining theorists to explain their conception of how power works in
Society. You have been called in as a guest judge to cast the tie breaking vote between the finalists,
Herbert Marcuse, Michel Foucault & Judith Butler.
In your essay provide an account of this finale, summarizing Marcuse’s theories on advanced capitalism,
the “one-dimensional” society and the non-repressive society that would follow and then discuss the ways
that Foucault and Butler’s theories on power and its connection to sexuality would critique Marcuse’s
theory of Liberation in the Non-repressive society. Be sure to close your essay with a short paragraph
where you decide which conception appears to work best and you crown the winner of “Sociology’s Next
    Top Theorist” cycle 1.
