When you enter into a new situation, what information do you look for to understand what is going on? Think back to the last few times you found yourself in a situation you didn’t fully understand, or a context that was completely new to you, describe what you did when you entered the situation, in order to figure out what was going on. What did you look at or for? Did you ask questions? Did you imitate how others were acting? How do you know how to behave in any given situation. Give at least three examples from your own life. How do you wish to be perceived? What do you want people to think about you when they look at you or meet you for the first time? In what ways do you express whatever you wrote for the answer to the last questions? Are there things that you don’t already do, that you could start doing, to increase the likelihood that people will perceive you how you want to be perceived?

Flaws in Group Leadership Research Design: An Evaluation and Proposed Solutions Title: Improving Research Design for Validity, Reliability, and Generalizability: A Critical Analysis of Flaws in Group Leadership Dynamics Study
Purpose of the Assignment:
The purpose of this assignment is to have you evaluate sociological research design. You will do this by identifying flaws and proposing solutions to those flaws in validity, reliability, and generalizability found in the research methodology of the provided research scenario. You will also demonstrate your sociological understanding of groups and leadership. Through this assignment, you will practice skills necessary to evaluate research you could possibly come across in real-world situations (in the news, social media, in current/future jobs, etc…). Research Scenario:
Here are the results of a rather poorly designed sociology study that investigated group leadership dynamics. The study suffered from significant methodological flaws, limiting the reliability and generalizability of the findings. The researcher chose a small convenience sample from personal friends. The sample had 8 women and 3 men. Participants were given a brief questionnaire with open-ended questions and no survey. None of the participants was a group leader themselves. Each participant defined “group” and “leadership” according to their own personal understanding of the terms. Despite these limitations, the study reported some preliminary observations, which should be interpreted with caution. Group Leadership Styles
The study explored different leadership styles observed within groups. Based on self-report questionnaires, participants reported a mix of authoritarian, democratic, and laissez-faire leadership styles in their groups. No definitions of these leadership styles were provided to participants.
Communication Patterns
Participants provided anecdotal evidence of various communication patterns within their groups. Some groups reported open and effective communication, fostering collaboration and decision-making. Conversely, others mentioned challenges with communication, such as dominance of certain members or lack of participation. (Anecdotal
evidence is personal stories that are collected because they seem interesting and related to the topic.)
Group Cohesion
The study assessed group cohesion by asking participants to describe their
perceived sense of unity and cooperation within their groups. The results indicated a range of
experiences, with some groups reporting high levels of cohesion and others reporting low levels.
Impact of Leadership on Group Performance
Participants were asked about the perceived impact of leadership on group performance. While some participants believed that effective leadership positively influenced group outcomes, others reported no significant relationship
between leadership and performance. There was no standardized measurement of performance.
Gender and Leadership
The study explored the potential influence of gender on leadership dynamics within the groups. participants provided subjective accounts of gender-related experiences in the workplace, including stereotypes and biases they think might impact leadership roles.
Results of this Study
The study only provides preliminary and insufficient insights into group leadership dynamics. Future research with improved research methods is necessary to deepen our understanding of group leadership and its impact on various outcomes.

Title: Exploring the Sociological Significance of Gender Roles and Expectations
You can upload your final project here. In the case of a video or recording hosted online you can also submit the associated URL here.
Your final project for this course will be to take one concept or theory from the course as if you were teaching it to an outsider who hasn’t taken the course.
You want to select one concept or theory from the course that you would like to explain. This can be something like “deviance” or “the difference between race and ethnicity”. If you are not sure if the concept or theory you want to explain is going to be a good fit for the project you can reach out to me and we can figure it out together.
You next need to pick the format your project is going to take. You can pick any format you want: essay, short video, padlet, digital poster, etc. If you are interested in a project format but are not sure if it qualifies just message me and ask.
Next you will want to complete the Final Project Check-In Sheet . This assignment represents a chance for everyone to make sure they are on the right track with the assignment and for me to provide everyone with feedback.
The project check-in sheet will make sure that your final project includes the following elements
The incorporation of at least one theoretical perspective within your project
The explanation of at least four sociological concepts/ideas/theories within your project
For example if you choose to focus on deviance for your final project you would also need to explain concepts such as socialization, and sanctions, and you would need to explain at least one theoretical perspective on deviance be it conflict theory, structural functionalism, etc.
Properly formatted references to at least five assigned readings/videos/etc. from the course
An argument regarding the importance of the concept to society. You want to explain what would be different about society if more people had a sociological awareness of the concept you have chosen to explain
After receiving feedback on your check-in sheet you can revise, finalize, and submit your project before or on the due date, May 21st.
Your project will be graded based on five criteria:
Analysis of Sociological Concepts
Application of Chosen Theoretical Perspective(s)
References and Incorporation of Course Materials
Effort Consistent With A Course Final
Logical Theme and Messaging
Things to remember:
Please see the rubric attached below for detailed criteria as to how you will be graded for this assignment
If you are having trouble figuring out how to start or end your project remember that the overall task is to explain your chosen topic to someone who has not taken the course, so work to include explanations of the relevant related theories and ideas that someone would need to understand in order to grasp your overall point
Also remember to spend a good amount of time/effort explaining why this topic is important to society
Remember that the end of your project, be it an essay, slides, video, etc. should include a list of references from the course that you drew on to complete the project
You need to include references to at least five assigned readings or videos from the course of the semester
You can also count any of the supplemental materials found at the end of each module toward the five course materials referenced
You can include outside sources in addition to the required sources listed above
Your list of sources needs to be formatted in APA or ASA style
