assignment (6-8 pages) on cross-cultural practice that
illustrates culturally relevant interpretation and application of practice
concepts and skills in the assessment of and/or intervention with a client or
family. Students should include theoretical notions (e.g. CBT, Narrative,
Solution focused, etc) from the readings and class discussion to ground their
paper. Citations and discussion of relevant empirical studies and/or literature
are required to substantiate the discussion.
Instruction:
Choose any minority
group in the US of interest to you. Conduct a literature review on this
group and identify mental health or social problems/ challenges faced by
this group. State your reason for choosing this group.
Then, choose a client,
family, or from this group with clinical presentation(s) or concern(s) of
interest to you. Provide a clinically relevant description of the
client/family and their reasons for engaging with the agency. State their
expectations. Give a brief overview of your agency’s practice.
Conduct a diagnostic
assessment, and clearly state client’s or family’s primary
concerns/presenting problems in terms of frequency, intensity and duration.
State your treatment goals
(SMART goals)
Conduct a complete
biopsychosocial assessment and develop a clinical formulation. Identify core
cultural elements or belief system may contributing or maintaining the
presenting problem or concerns.
With knowledge gain
from your assessment:
Identify any of the
treatment models discussed in class that you will use to intervene in the
client’s presenting problems (do not use cognitive behavior therapy).
Describe this model of intervention, theoretical underpinning, and why
you believe it could be an effective intervention.
Describe steps you will
take to ensure your intervention is culturally sensitive and effective in
resolving the client’s or family’s concerns or presenting problems.
Describe how you will
evaluate the outcome of your intervention.
Discuss how you think
the client or family will react to termination.
Describe how you will
react to the termination of services.

Cultural Self-Assessment

This is an exercise to conduct a self-assessment aimed at increasing 
awareness of your cultural competency in working with diverse populations, 
across micro, mezzo or macro systems. 
a) Briefly describe the six points of cultural competency on Cross, Bazron, 
Dennis, & Isaacs (1989) cultural competence continuum. 
b) How does cultural competence differ from cultural humility?
c) How would you assess yourself on this continuum?
d) What are some things you might do to move further (if needed) on the 
continuum and to achieve cultural humility? How about with one unfamiliar 
population?

I envision several aspects of a “new world” and open a framework of thinking about where we as a human society are moving towards within the context of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. If we know where we’ve been, and know where we are now, we can use this tool to help our selves move UP the “ladder” – individually and collectively. I welcome you to share ANY reflections about the content I presented in the video, though I would be especially curious to hear your thoughts/reactions to any/all of the questions I posed in the slide below, which speaks to how evolution takes place on an individual level, a family level, and a societal level:

Social
workers must demonstrate empathy and learn how to
identify areas for self-improvement when building relational rapport with
diverse individuals. When working with clients, social workers will regularly
discuss their approaches with supervisors to improve their self-awareness and refine
their strategies for engaging with others. 
Using scenario 2, explain the importance of empathy when
engaging with clients in a report of 525 words as if you were a social worker
discussing your skills with a supervisor:
Describe the situation and explain why it may be
personally challenging for you. Summarize NASW standards and expectations
for social workers’ interpersonal skills to show empathy while engaging
with clients in this situation.
Summarize potential risks to the helping
relationship if clients suspect that their social worker lacks empathy for
their situation. Describe potential conflicts that could occur between the
client’s beliefs and the belief systems they might encounter while
receiving social services. Explain how you might prevent such conflict.
