Assignment “Drug Chronicles: Unveiling Patterns and Narratives”
Objective: Complete a comprehensive exploration of drug use, its historical context, the war on drugs, user demographics, and the portrayal of drugs in the media. This assignment encourages a creative and analytical approach to understanding drug-related phenomena. This assignment aims to blend creativity with analysis, allowing you to engage with the intricate narratives surrounding drug use, history, the war on drugs, user demographics, and media representations.
You must include specific themes, concepts, material from the provided supplemental materials and the textbook when completing the assignment . . . comprehensively. So, for example, when doing #2 below, you will need to create the timeline using your textbook and supplement with key events as depicted in the supplemental materials. Do not use direct quotes as that does not demonstrate your understanding and do not use sources not provided in the class (refer to note below) as this again does not demonstrate understanding of the course materials.
Note: As #1 and #2 below require a “visual representation” and “visual timeline” – you are welcome to use pictures from basic Google searches that you find that are outside of the class materials, but as to actual content to complete steps 1-4 below, rely exclusively on the textbook chapters and the above supplemental materials.
Instructions:
A Visual Representation of the Demographics of Drug Users (use Chapters 2 and 5 in your textbook and relevant information from supplemental sources):  Design a poster or presentation that explores the demographics of drug users. Illustrate who uses which drugs and why, using images, icons, and concise text to convey key insights.  Incorporate the material/themes/concepts from Chapters 2 & 5 in your work on this section and clearly cite all sources. 
A Comprehensive Historical Timeline of Drug Use and the War on Drugs (use material in Chapters 3 & 4 and the above supplemental materials):  Create a visual timeline that includes: a) the history of drug use and b) key moments in the historical development of the war on drugs. For every single element included on this timeline, provide the source (for example:  Prohibition (textbook chapter 3, Vox article, Prohibition to Gold Rush, and Crash Course)). Then explain these key moments, key individuals, and cultural shifts that have influenced the evolution of drug consumption and the war on drugs. Intertwine facts, dates, major policies, laws, etc.  Explain these pivotal moments in your timeline by explaining the relevance of the laws, dates, etc. that you included.
The War on Drugs: Discuss the “war on drugs” – highlight the successes and failures of the war on drugs. Do you believe that this “war” was on drugs? If yes, explain.  If no, what do you believe it is a “war” on and why? What is the impact on society in general on the underclass, the middle class, and the upper class of the law enforcement model and the war on drugs? Please note that you are not limited to answer just this prompt . . . it is just that, a prompt. It is a start, to get you thinking, giving you the opportunity to build, critically assess and critique the required materials and the textbook.
Voices in the Media: An Analysis (focus on Chapter 6 though not limited exclusively to this chapter): Choose a specific example of popular media (can be a show, podcast, book, article, movie, etc . . . you get the idea), like a specific episode of NYPD Blue, and apply the concepts from Chapter 6 and the course material to critically assess the media. For example, the demographics of a typical drug use (Q1 above) compared to how drug users are depicted in the episode you selected, critique in terms of bias, etc. Have fun with this section. Yes, it will have to be a form of popular media that actually has somethings to do with drugs but that should be easy to find! Begin by explaining and linking to the source (episode, podcast, article, book, etc.) that you used. Use material from the class and do not merely summarize an example of drug use in popular media.

Objective:
The purpose of this assignment is to investigate a social policy with some depth and explore the implications of that policy. This paper requires research on the policy itself as well as the historical era and events surrounding the development and implementation of the policy. You will also include a discussion of the intent, target(s) (behavioral and/or individual), ideologies, and impacts of the policy. Lastly you will evaluate the effectiveness of the policy (based on others’ research) and/or present an alternative policy or strategy to meet the policy’s stated goals.
Format:
The paper should cover the following 5 areas:
Identify a social policy
Provide some historical context of the policy (what was happening around this time and location) – was it during the progressive era, welfare reform era, etc.
Describe the social policy: how did the policy come to be? What social problem was it set up to solve? What was the target population or behavior of the policy? What were the eligibility criteria of the policy and what were the benefits and/or burdens of it?
Analyze the values (e.g. equality of opportunity) ideologies (protestant work ethic, paternalism, individualism, etc.) and/or moral theories (e.g. liberalism, Marxism, etc.) driving and/or supporting this policy.
Discuss the extent to which this policy achieves its aims and consider alternative strategies to achieve the goals of this social policy.

Describe an ethical dilemma presented in the case study.

Cindy is a 14 y.o. female whose step father kicked her out of the house last night. Her mother did not stick up for her when he accused Cindy of stealing cash. She describes to you, a crisis hotline worker, how she spent the night at a friend’s house.  It has been 12 hours and she has not heard from either her mother or her step-father.
Rachel is a 30 y.o. female whose spouse has has died during deployment in Afghanistan. The funeral was a month ago and she describes to you how she is experiencing difficulty with her temper at work and at home, lashing out over ordinary things. She has difficulty sleeping and has a diminished appetite. You are the social worker at the VA hospital, you facilitate a bereavement group and are screening Lori for potential participation in the group.
Robert is a 16 y.o. LGBT client who is has not come out to his family or friends. Friends are teasing about his lack of dating experience with the opposite sex, as many of them are dating and becoming sexually active. His parents have expressed agreement with religious beliefs that do not tolerate homosexuality. He states in an early session with you that he does not wish to make his sexual orientation known to your family or friends at this time.
Andrea is a 20 y.o. college student who just found out her roommate and her recent ex- significant other have started dating each other. She tells you that she suspect they began their relationship while she was still with the ex. Andrea is not attending classes, not staying in her dorm room, and is not telling her parents about this disruption in her life. She is now seeing you at the college counseling center after her resident assistant’s suggestion she find some help.
Michael is a 30 y.o. who has been referred for counseling by the employee assistance program at his job due to coming to work with alcohol on his breath and displaying erratic behavior with customers. He is certain that this referral is unnecessary despite being told he could lose your job if he did not correct his behavior. You are conducting his intake as a counselor for the employee assistance program.
Carl is a 10 y.o. who has been bullied by other students on the bus to school. The mistreatment ranged from verbal teasing to items taken from his backpack and tripping him when he attempts to get off of the bus.  His teacher alerts you, the school social worker, to the fact that almost every day as he arrives at school he needs to sit in the nurse’s office until he feels ready to go to his classroom.
Carol is a 28 y.o. whose spouse has been yelling and shouting at her when the spouse drinks too much alcohol (every Friday and Saturday night for the last 5 months). Her parents have histories of alcohol abuse which negatively impacted her childhood and adulthood. You are a crisis hotline worker, and she calls asking for information about Al-Anon meetings in the area as attending Al-Anon meetings in college was helpful to her.
Calvin is a 70 y.o. widower whose adult children live in another state. He has recently had health problems keeping him from being able to travel to visit them. Their visits and calls to him are less frequent than he would prefer. You are a medical social worker at a health clinic where Calvin goes for his medical care. His physician noticed a change in his affect and suggested that he talk with you. He explains his recent history to you in this brief meeting.
Anna is a 30 y.o. in a same-sex relationship with a partner who has recently come out to their family. When she visit with her partner’s family, she is not included in family photos or discussions. Her partner often minimizes your concerns when she discusses the family issue openly.  Anna is seeking support from you, a social worker at the community center where her LGBT service group meets each month.
Taylor is  a 14 y.o. high school student referred for counseling for cutting (self injury). Her parents yelled at her when they found out and threatened to send her to boarding school if she doesn’t stop with “the dramatics”.  You are a social worker at her high school and meet with her after she was found ditching class and isolating herself in a library study room.

It is important to be able to identify evidence-based methods and practices and to recognize how these practices are used for specific clients in appropriate settings. This journal activity will allow you to think through these important actions and to continue reflecting on the case study that you will address in your final project.
First, review the case study in the Final Project Guidelines and Rubric document and select one of the following issues or conditions from the case study:
Mobility issues
Assistance with activities of daily living
Difficulty paying bills
Stroke
Trauma
Then identify evidence-based practices that might be used with a patient like Jean across at least two different settings:
Hospital
Rehabilitation center
Home healthcare
Hospice
In 250 to 300 words, explain how evidenced-based practices can be used to assist Jean and improve her quality of life, regarding one issue or condition across at least two different settings. Ideally, the practices you discuss will be relevant in multiple settings, but you may need to explain how these practices can be adjusted to fit certain settings.
Remember to always approach the issue from the perspective of a human services professional as opposed to that of a healthcare professional such as a nurse or a doctor.
