  • “Supporting New Immigrants: A Social Worker’s Role in Navigating Systems and Promoting Cultural Humility”

A CASE OF A NEW IMMIGRANT
Imagine that you are an immigrant arriving in a new country. Perhaps you are escaping persecution, famine, or war, or simply pursuing a better life. Perhaps you are detained at the border. You do not have any support networks in this new country, or if you do, they are distant relations. You do not know how the legal system works. You may not know the official language. What would you need? Where would you go?
Social workers are positioned to support new immigrants in their access to services, navigation of systems and policies, and mental and physical health. They must demonstrate cultural humility by, for example, integrating questions related to cultural formulation into their interviews and assessments.
In this Discussion, you research a global or displaced population and create a scenario in which a member of that population immigrates to the United States. You then respond to a colleague’s case scenario by describing how you would engage with the immigrant client as a social worker.
    To prepare:
Review the American Psychiatric Association’s information on cultural formulation, as well as the Think Cultural Health video showing the cultural formulation interview in practice.
Identify and research a global or displaced population to focus on for this Discussion. Imagine that a member of this population immigrates to the United States. What strengths and challenges might they have? Develop a brief case scenario describing the immigrant’s experience.
Post your original case scenario involving a new immigrant to the United States. In your scenario:
Identify the country of origin, language(s) spoken, and any employment, housing, legal, or family concerns of the individual.(I’m from cuba )
Describe strengths and challenges related to their arrival and experience of American culture.

  • Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation Research Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation: Impact on Life Span Development and Application to Social Work Practice

GENDER IDENTITY AND SEXUAL ORIENTATION RESEARCH
Misconceptions and stereotypes abound with regard to gender and sexuality. This is due to many factors, including media portrayals of LGBTQ individuals, outdated understandings, and socialization within the family and culture. Social workers must strive to avoid these misconceptions and remain bias-free while also making the best possible client decisions. By surveying evidence-based research, you can remain current with best practices and ensure you are using the most up-to-date language and methods with the LGBTQ population.
For this Assignment, you search for and analyze a peer-reviewed research article on gender identity or sexual orientation, consider what you have learned, and apply your findings to practice.
    TO PREPARE:
Conduct a search in the Walden Library to identify at least one peer-reviewed research article that addresses gender identity or sexual orientation in young or middle adulthood.
Select an article that you find especially relevant to you in your role as a social worker.
Consider how you might apply the findings from both the research article and the Learning Resources to social work practice.
A summary of your findings regarding gender identity or sexual orientation and its impact on life span development. This should include information from the Learning Resources and from the journal article(s) you selected during your research.
An explanation of how you might apply your findings to social work practice.
Make sure to provide APA citations and a reference list.

  • Evaluating the Effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Intervention for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Single-Subject Design Study

The steps at the heart of single-subject research are part of the everyday practice of social work. Each day social workers implement interventions to meet clients’ needs and monitor results. However, conducting proper single-subject research entails far more than these simple day-to-day practices. Proper single-system research requires a high degree of knowledge and commitment. Social workers must fully understand the purpose and variations of the design. They must develop a hypothesis based upon research and select the right design for testing it. They must ensure the reliability and validity of the data to be collected and know how to properly analyze and evaluate that data.
In this Assignment, you devise a plan to evaluate the evidence-based intervention that you are applying with your chosen client. In particular, you must prepare to monitor progress using measures that can be evaluated in a single-subject research design. You must also draw from the research literature to set the context and need for the study.
Review the work you have done thus far in Weeks 1, 2, and 3 with your chosen client, namely the identified issue, evidence-based intervention, and single-subject design. You will use this work to develop a research plan for a single-subject design study on your client.
Scan through the provided single-subject design studies in the Learning Resources again to understand the typical structure.
    Download the Single-Subject Design Template
from the Learning Resources and use it to complete this Assignment.
Submit a 4- to 5-page proposal/research plan for single-subject evaluation for your work with your chosen client. Identify the problem that you will target, the outcomes that you will measure, the evidence-based intervention, and the evaluation design. Include the following sections:
    Introduction
    Literature Review
    Methodology
    Setting and Intervention
    Expected Results
Use the Learning Resources and peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles to support your paper. Make sure to include appropriate APA citations and a reference list.

    PLEASE RESPOND TO CLASSMATE FR:
The current social policy regarding migrant farmworkers in the United States has a significant and multifaceted impact on both the workers themselves and the broader agricultural sector, leading to a ripple effect of consequences.
    https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/laws-and-regulations/laws/mspa
Firstly, many migrant farmworkers live under challenging conditions. A significant portion of these workers, about 61%, have incomes falling below the poverty level, with a median income of less than $7500 a year. This leads to a situation where many feel trapped in farm work, with few other viable options and the shame of returning to their homelands with less than what they came with. The lack of legal status for a large number of these workers, approximately 44%, exacerbates their vulnerability, leading to increased instances of injustice and abuse. They often cannot protest inadequate conditions or report violations due to fear of displacement and deportation. This situation undermines their ability to have a voice, agency, and advocacy, effectively rendering them invisible within the broader society.
Health-wise, migrant farmworkers face severe risks due to the physically demanding nature of their work and inadequate living conditions. Heat-related illnesses, exposure to pesticides, injuries, infections, and mental health issues like depression are common among these workers. These health challenges are compounded by barriers to accessing healthcare, including prohibitive costs, a lack of culturally appropriate services, fear of reporting to authorities for undocumented workers, and the inability to get sick leave. The agricultural sector itself is impacted by the challenges faced by migrant farmworkers. There is an ageing trend among immigrant workers in agriculture, with fewer young immigrant workers replacing the older ones. This situation, coupled with the reluctance of Americans to take up demanding farm jobs, has led to labour shortages. The H-2A visa, intended to address this issue, is often too expensive and cumbersome for many growers. This shortage of workers has slowed the growth in the volume of crops produced in the U.S. Consequently, there is an increasing reliance on imported foods to meet consumer demand, particularly for fresh fruits and vegetables.
In conclusion, the current social policy towards migrant farmworkers has profound implications, both for the workers themselves and the U.S. agricultural sector. The challenges faced by these workers ripple out to affect the broader economy, food production, and societal health and well-being.
Fyi: The Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act (MSPA) is a U.S. federal law designed to protect migrant and seasonal agricultural workers. It establishes standards related to wages, housing, transportation, disclosures, and recordkeeping. The Act also mandates the registration of farm labour contractors with the U.S. Department of Labor. Key components include provisions for worker safety, information disclosure to workers about their employment conditions, and specific requirements for recordkeeping by employers.
