  • Title: The Modern Presidency: Executive Authority and Checks and Balances

    The Modern Presidency
Leading Constitutional theorists, such as John Rohr, would argue that the Framers of the Constitution of the United States wanted to ensure that presidential power would be properly checked by the other two powers but particularly the legislative. As per Article I, Section 8, of the Constitution, which specifically provides that “… Congress shall provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States … and have the power to make all laws necessary and proper for carrying into execution, not only its own Powers but also all other Powers vested by the Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof” (U.S. Constitution, 1791). However, in more recent times, United States’ presidents, particularly George W. Bush and Barack Obama, have been accused of overstepping their executive authority.
For this Discussion, consider the last two or three administrations. Has the power of the President extended so far that it has tipped the scales in favor of executive powers, relative to legislative or judicial power? Is this a phenomenological consequence of a post-9/11 world? Or have the expectations of the President as commander in chief of the world’s most powerful nation changed since Youngstown Sheet & Tube v. Sawyer?

  • “Why Skittles are the Superior Candy: A Persuasive Speech”

Topic Dogs do make great pets.
Your pretend speech should sound something like this:
Hello. My name is Bob. Skittles are better than Starburst for three reasons: Skittles have crunchy shells, you don’t have to unwrap Skittles, and Skittles fit in your pocket better than Starburst.
Skittles have a delicious crunchy outer shell that Starburst do not have. This makes Skittles better than Starburst because Skittles are simply more complex.
Starburst come individually wrapped; it takes way too long to get to the fruit-juicy treasure inside. Skittles, on the other hand, are bit sized pieces that you don’t have to unwrap.
Finally, a bag of Skittles fits nicely into the front or back pocket of most jeans. Starburst, on the other hand, come in long, square packages that protrude awkwardly (even embarrassingly) from jean pockets.
In conclusion, skittles are better than Starburst because Skittles have crunchy shells, you don’t have to unwrap Skittles, and a bag of Skittles fits easily in your pocket, unlike Starburst. Thank you.

  • Title: “Exploring the Role of Public Relations in Modern Society: A Critical Analysis of Reading and Research, Argument and Critical Thinking, and Presentation and Communication”

Marking criteria: Three sets of criteria are assessed in essays: reading and research, argument and critical thinking, and presentation and communication. Markers are thus looking for the following:
    – Reading and research: evidence of critical engagement with reading materials; evidence of independent reading of a range of appropriate academic material (including books and academic journal articles) beyond the core readings. Evidence of having understood what you read.
The readings in the core and further reading list for each week are a starting point for your essay. In order to find more relevant material, you should: a) read other chapters from the books used in your readings (most of them are edited collections with lots of chapters that cover a wide breadth of topics in this module, beyond the individual chapters selected for the reading list); b) find current research addressing these topics by browsing these journals on the university library website: Public Relations Review; Journal of Public Relations Research; Public Relations Inquiry; Public Relations Quarterly; c) follow up references used in articles or chapters that you have already found relevant to your essay topic.
    – Argument and critical thinking: well-articulated and well-supported argument; evidence of critical thinking (through taking a position in relation to key ideas from the module and supporting this position with evidence from readings and examples); evidence of relational thinking (through making connections between key ideas from the module and wider literature and examples); evidence of independent critical ability.
    – Presentation and Communication: clear writing; clear and coherent (easy to follow) structure; accuracy in referencing.
