Workplace Violence
Workplace violence is the last category of risk we will cover in this course. Thinking about this generally, this can mean a broad range of things, including violence on the job from co-workers or patients, mass shootings, sexual assault, and violence during the course of another crime such as robbery. These crimes can be both personal and impersonal, but many of them involve an affective nature rather than a predatory nature (White, 2021). The most common types of violence in this category are often much smaller incidents with only 1-2 victims. Most commonly, this is a former employee who has anger towards a supervisor or an individual who was rejected by, was in a former relationship with (spouse), or had jealousy issues related to a female employee. That said, attacks do also come from people outside the organization, though they are much harder to detect early (White, 2021). In your readings this week, you will learn about this issue in-depth and the ways in which this type of risk is assessed and managed. This will include in-depth information on two respected instruments in the field, the Workplace Assessment for Violence Risk 21- Version 3 (WAVR-21 V3) and the Cawood Assessment Grid (CAG). You may also enjoy this resource related to ways that workplaces manage risk: ASIS International and Society for Human Resources Management, link in the Lib Guide.
In addition to learning about workplace violence, this week, you will complete your Signature Assignment, which will allow you to present what you learned about risk assessment in this course and specifically related to one area of risk. This PowerPoint presentation is important for many reasons; most importantly, it is an opportunity for you to practice professional presentation skills while applying research to a real-life presentation scenario. Some critical elements in this endeavor are:
Presenting slides that are visually appealing and give some basics on what you will say about that area
Including a transсrіpt of what you will say in your audio clips on each slide in the notes section
Using the notes/ audio presentation to elaborate and explain the bullet points in the actual slide
Including in-text citations throughout your slides and in your notes, so you give credit to the researchers you paraphrased
Being sure you have presented this in a way that is relevant to your proposed audience and is understandable but still scholarly
Reviewing to determine if you included all required elements and checked for any grammar, spelling, or clarity issues in your writing
As we close out the course, one of your readings is a keynote address to the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals during their 25th-anniversary conference by Dr. J. Reid Meloy, who you may have realized by now is a prominent figure in this field. This exceptional speech covers a broad range of topics to help you think about all you have learned, where the field has been and where it is headed, and the dilemmas in this field as a practitioner. It will leave you with some good food for thought as you continue your educational path forward in the field of forensic psychology.

Week 8 – Signature Assignment: Conduct Training on the Assessment Tools in your Field
Assignment
Task: Submit to complete this assignment
Due May 5 at 11:59 PM
For this assignment, you will imagine you′ve been invited to conduct training on risk assessment tools at a location. You will be going to a school, police dept, lawyers′ office, meeting with clinicians, or to meet with jail officials or probation, who want support on how to assess a specific type of risk or threat assessment. In order to do that, you will need to illustrate generally how risk assessment works and then give an in-depth overview of how that is done for your specific area (arson, sexual risk, violence risk, threat assessment, intimate partner violence, stalking, workplace violence). This should include information about why assessing this area is important (i.e. prevalence rates of this type of crime and how this applies to your audience), risk and protective factors related to the area, and different ways assessment can occur. You will then explain at least 2 instruments specifically appropriate to the assessment of risk related to your area. This should include who the instrument is used for (age, gender, offender status), how it is utilized (interview? Record review? Who can use it?), and what data can be gleaned from the use of the instrument (is it predictive? How is the reliability? Does it give you a risk level to consider?). Finally, you will provide an overall summary and conclusions on the utility, reliability, and validity of the current state of this field of risk, including any areas where your audience should use caution related to concerns in the research or how to apply the tools, particularly as it relates to competency and ethics in practice. Support your training using the scholarly references from the course materials as well as any additional scholarly references relevant to your topic.
Your presentation should include the following:
Include a Title Page Slide – identify where your training will take place and the intended audience
Include a Slide that provides an overview of the topics you will discuss in your presentation
Include at least one slide which discusses risk assessment generally and its′ purpose
Include 2-4 slides that describe the area of risk you will be addressing:
including the prevalence of the concern as it relates to the party you are presenting to (i.e., rates of juvenile fire setting if you are presenting to a fire department that wants to address this issue with youth) based on scholarly resources/ statistics
risk and protective factors related to that area of risk
any relevant theories/ typologies which are important to consider
Include at least 2 slides that discuss 2 assessment instruments you might use to assess risk, including:
who the instrument is used for (age, gender, offender status),
how it is utilized (interview? Record review? Who can use it?),
what data can be gleaned from the use of the instrument (is it predictive? How is the reliability? Does it give you a risk level to consider?)
Include at least 1 slide with an overall summary and conclusions on the utility, reliability, and validity of the current state of this field of risk, including any limitations or ethical concerns
Include Reference Slides
Be sure to record and include audio clips for each slide which should be based off what you have included in the Notes for each slide.
You will also need to be sure to include a notes section for each slide (with appropriate in-text citations) which you will use as your speaker notes for audio recordings on each slide. On the slides, you will want to present visually appealing information and bullet-point information for the viewer to take in, while the notes section will be more like a small paragraph that will explain each slide more in-depth and be used as your transсrіpt for speaking.
Length: 8-12 content slides (this does not include the title and reference slides), PPT presentation, 200-300 words per slide (in the notes section)
References: Include a minimum of 10 scholarly references.
The completed assignment should address all of the assignment requirements, exhibit evidence of concept knowledge, and demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the content presented in the course. The writing should integrate scholarly resources, reflect academic expectations and current APA standards, and adhere to the Northcentral University′s Academic Integrity Policy.
When applicable, conduct a Turnitin pre-check and then upload your completed assignment and click the Submit to Dropbox button.
