“Navigating Multicultural Conflicts in Psychology Specialization: A Simulated Case Study Analysis” Multicultural Competency in Psychology: A Case Study Analysis
Create a PowerPoint presentation (minimum 6 slides) that analyzes a simulated case study of a multicultural conflict that could potentially occur within your psychology specialization. After analyzing one’s multifaceted cultural identity and biases, the next step toward multicultural competency is to plan how you can use best practices to minimize the negative impact of these factors on professional relationships.
Multicultural competence is essential to be an equitable and effective psychologist; therefore, both working practitioners and learners require professional development in this area. The case study, which is an in-depth report and analysis of events, activities, or processes involving one or more individuals or a situation, is an important tool for training as it allows us to analyze real-life professional concerns without doing harm to the people who service our services.
Working psychologists continue to consult with colleagues on case studies to improve their professional competencies. While actual case studies are based on factual reports, simulated (or fictional) case studies, or vignettes, are often used to illustrate situations that could occur in practice and evaluate potential courses of action. A PowerPoint presentation can be an effective means of sharing case study details and lessons learned in a professional context.
To deepen your understanding, you are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community.
What are some common cultural conflicts that occur in the workplace?
How might cultural differences contribute to conflicts?
How might a person’s biases impact cultural conflict and potential solutions?
What are some productive ways that cultural conflicts can be resolved?
Preparation
Note: The assessments in this course build upon each other, so you are strongly encouraged to complete them in sequence.
Create a simulated (or fictional) case study, concerning a cultural conflict between yourself, working in your area of specialization, and some person or persons, agency/business, or institution. Several points of cultural difference must exist between you and the others involved in this conflict. While the details of your case will be fictional, it must be entirely believable and realistic.
Download and use the Multicultural Case Study Template [PPTX]to complete this assessment. Do not submit a paper for this assessment. Papers will not be graded. You will complete this assessment by replacing all language that is enclosed with brackets […] in the PowerPoint with your own words. For guidance on PowerPoint design, consult the PowerPoint Resources activity in this assessment.
The Presentation
Title slide: On the first slide of the PowerPoint:Enter a descriptive title of approximately 5–15 words that concisely communicates the heart of the case study. It should stir interest while maintaining professional decorum.
Enter your name, and a job title and organization that would fit with your case study.
Case Study Overview slide: Provide the briefest possible narrative description of the case. Additional supporting details and references can be added in the notes section on the slide. The overview should include:The professional setting of the case, based on your psychology specialization (for example, in treatment, in the classroom, in a hospital, jail, or a community-based setting).
The relationship that exists between you and the other persons involved. Some possible examples may be:Professor—Student.
Therapist—Patient.
Colleague—Colleague.
Consultant—Business.
Clinical Supervisor—Student intern.
Professional Supervisor—Employee.
A very brief summation of the cultural conflicts involved in the case.
Cultural Differences slides: On the table provided in the template, list side by side the main cultural identities from the Hays model, relevant to the conflict in the case, of yourself and another person, agency, or institution in the case.If more than one person, agency, or institution is involved in the case, make a copy of this slide for each one, to compare yourself to all others involved.
In the notes section:Identify common concerns with each cultural identity. Be careful to avoid using stereotypes.
Analyze how cultural differences contributed to the conflict in this case.
Identify two relevant biases you have or had, and at least one strategy for improving your cultural competency around each of those biases.
Relevant Biases: Identify two relevant biases you have or had, and at least one strategy for improving your cultural competency around each of those biases.
Best Practices When Working With [Cultural Identity] slides: Identify a best practice for working with a cultural identity in this case and cite its source. Then, briefly analyze how the best practice could help you navigate this particular relationship and conflict. In the notes section, describe the best practice in more detail and elaborate as needed on your analysis of how the best practice could help you navigate the relationship and conflict.
Citation requirements: You must cite best practices from at least three scholarly research articles. You may cite reputable sources form websites, books, textbooks, and suggested resources as well, but these will not count toward the three required scholarly research references.
Copy this slide as needed to address each cultural identity in this case.
Conclusion slide: Summarize the main lessons learned in this case study in a brief bulleted list.
References slides: See step 4 for citation requirements. Use current APA style and formatting guidelines.

Challenging Flawed Information: The Role of Biology in Motivation, Sex, Gender, and Emotion “Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Ethical Considerations in Psychological Research: Exploring the Benefits, Flawed Sources, and Peer-Reviewed Evidence” Exploring the Relationship between Physiology and Behavior: A Review of Psychological Theories and Research Methods
Write a 5–7 page paper that focuses on challenging a flawed source of
information about biopsychology, using evidence from credible and scholarly sources.
Biological systems influence our motivations. Some motivations—like eating—are pretty well understood. Other motivations remain a bit harder
to explain. Understanding the biological aspect of the motivation we have is imperative for practitioners when understanding the behavior of their clients. Biology further contributes to our emotions and health. Think of your own emotional reactions or experiences of stress: what biological actions underlie such emotions or experiences? There are also
biological building blocks behind our understanding of sex and gender. With this assessment, you will explore further one of these areas.
The easy availability of poor quality, outdated, or inaccurate information about how our brains work can make it challenging to find trustworthy information. The objective of this assessment is to practice
finding and using credible evidence to counter flawed sources.
Choose one of the following controversial statements:
Obesity is caused by a lack of willpower.
There are large differences between men and women’s cognitive ability.
Only women should compete in women’s sports.
Topic of your choice related to the content in the chapters on Motivation, Sex, Gender, or Emotion in your course text, Brain and Behavior: An Introduction to Behavioral Neuroscience. Remember that this book is available in the VitalSource bookshelf in the courseroom.
Find one flawed source of information on the Internet. To find a flawed source, look for one with a substantial number of errors.
Read what the textbook says about the controversial statement.
Use the controversial statement mentioned above and use it as your search word/phrase.
If you don’t see a flawed source on the first page of results, skip to the third page of results or further.
Look for sources that are not accurate based on the information in your textbook.
Tips for finding flawed sources:
Scroll through your social media feeds.
Scroll through your results and look for sources that are NOT:
.gov websites.
News or press websites.
Then, find three peer-reviewed journal articles in the Capella library focused on the actions of the brain and body that underlie your topic.
In your paper:
Describe one other field (such as biology or medical sciences) that studies your topic.
Compare this field to psychology.
Contrast this field to psychology.
Explain the benefit of the two fields working together regarding your topic.
Summarize your flawed source, including any evidence provided.
Provide evidence from your three peer-reviewed journal articles.
For each source:
Discuss the methods, participants, and results.
Explain the reliability, validity, and generalizability of the sources.
Discuss whether the research is ethically based on the five APA ethical principles of psychologists. Refer to the specific principles and cite the Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct.
Relate the actions of the mind and body to psychological and physical health.
Describe the actions of the brain and body involved.
Connect these biological actions to your topic.
Describe one of the psychological or behavioral theories that explain your topic.
Describe the value and limitation of using theories to explain behavioral phenomena.
Construct your own explanation to explain the cause of your topic.
Explain your rationale.
Refer back to evidence already presented in your paper.
Headings
Use headers to organize your paper. Recommended headers:

“Exploring the Impact of Stress on Cancer: Models, Theories, and Coping Mechanisms”
Sohaib Sarwar
22:49 (0 minutes ago)
I HAVE CHOSEN “CANCER” AS MY TOPIC. AND FOLLOWING ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS THAT WAS MADE TO ME BY MY TEACHERS.
This is your decision entirely, you can decide to write about cancer in general and include mentions of specific cancer. For example if you choose to discuss tobacco as a coping mechanism of stress, you may find research discussing tobacco increasing the risk of lung cancer specifically, so you can still mention specific cancers
If you do decide to write about a specific cancer for the whole essay be mindful that your literature searching will become more novel (which is good for the LOs, but at the same time you may struggle with finding enough research if you are too specific which could impact the LOs negatively)
When you discuss the models of stress, and theories your references will be older, but as a whole your essay should be based on references on journal articles in the last 5-10 years
you might find an older journal article which has the perfect point for your essay, you can still use it but please make sure you back up your point with a newer reference
Minimum of one model for the essay, but discussions of the models of stress should be relevant to the argument, so each argument might not have a model of stress. -
The Reciprocal Influence of the Situation and the Individual: Exploring Social Psychology through Personal Images
A central theme in social psychology is the reciprocal influence of the situation and the individual. How is this evident in your life?
Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, read Chapter 1 and Chapter 9 of the textbook, Body Ritual Among the Nacirema, and watch The Power of the Situation and Constructing Social Reality. Then, complete the following:
Define social psychology.
Select 10 images that are meaningful to you. Though these can be images of people, aim to capture a variety of images that illustrate ideas or emotions (e.g., truth, love, happiness, hope, honor, etc.), as well as places, events, and objects. Ideally, these will be your own photographs, but if you instead choose images online you must provide appropriate citations. (For free images visit Pexels.) Display your chosen images. You may choose to present the images in a collage, PowerPoint slide show, or other format.
Interpret your selected images based on your definition of social psychology as a science, specifically the power of the situation (including cultural patterns across space and time) and the construction of social reality. How do these photos—or your interpretation of them—illustrate social thinking, social influence, or social relations?
Write a paragraph describing your selection from an outsider’s perspective, considering why it is important to practice seeing the world through an objective lens from a personal and professional perspective.
Your initial post should include your selected images (10 minimum) as well as an explanation and analysis (500-word minimum). Structure your post using complete Body Paragraphs, and consider using headings to organize the various required components of the prompt. (See APA Style Elements for guidelines regarding the use of headings in your writing.) Your initial post should reference, at minimum, the required resources, including the textbook. Additional Scholarly, Peer Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources are encouraged.
