  • “The Power of First Impressions: How Thin Slices of Behavior and Nonverbal Cues Shape Our Perceptions of Others”

    pick one of these topics:
    Chapter 5: Perceiving Others
    1. How Do Thin Slices of Behavior Inform Our First Impressions of Others? Explore how brief
observations of someone’s behavior can lead to surprisingly accurate judgments about their
personality. What does research say about our ability to form impressions from thin slices of
information, and what implications does this have for social interactions?
    2. What Are the Implications of Nonverbal Behavior in Shaping Our Perceptions of Others?
Discuss the role of nonverbal behaviors, such as facial expressions, gestures, and tone of voice, in
the formation of first impressions. How do these nonverbal cues contribute to our understanding of
someone’s character and intentions, and what challenges do they present in accurately perceiving
    others?

  • Title: Improving APA Style: Identifying and Correcting Common Errors in Academic Writing

It’s time to really dig into the many rules of APA Style within the context. Copy and paste the sentences into the text box, and then for each sentence below, identify how the sentence violates an APA rule, and then suggest how to improve the sentence. You may change the wording of the entire sentence. For your help, the specific section of the APA manual that describes a rule that is violated is given in parentheses after the sentence. Evert et al. (2000) failed to inform their audience that the test they used is biased. (3.07).
The study examined people with dementia. (3.09).
We conducted a survey on the eating habits of autistic and normal controls. (3.15).
The participants were boys and girls aged 15 to 16 years old. (3.16).
A survey was sent to one third of the student body. (3.18).
The data was analyzed in SPSS. (3.19).
The data can take the theory farther since the experimental data extend the broader theory. (3.22).
    The arena was 10 c.m. wide X 20 c.m. long. (4.02).
Participants rated the intensity of the taste stimulus from 1 ‘very weak’ to 7 ‘very strong’. (4.07).
Results revealed a significant difference between groups, p < 0.05. (4.09). The experimental and control groups were significantly different, see Figure 2. (4.09). We describe an easy way to modify standard laboratory glasses/goggles to simulate the various perceptual deficits that accompany common visual disorders. (4.11). The data was collected from students in psychology courses. (4.12). One-half of participants were randomly assigned to the control group. (4.13). Tukey post-hoc tests revealed differences between groups. (4.13). Their study examined the effect that these two compounds had on excitation in three test groups: Heterosexual men, gay men, and heterosexual females. (4.14). Data indicated that rats in the Experimental and Control groups did not differ in performance. (4.19). Trials were 5 min to 10 min long. (4.27). Subjects were two years old. (4.31). 48 participants participated in the study. (4.32).

  • The Elusive Nature of Traumatic Memory: A Comprehensive Literature Review

LITERATURE REVIEW IS ON THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH QUESTION
Why do we experience a loss of memory during / after trauma?
For this choice you will complete a thorough literature review on a topic of your choosing.  Your topic can be on anything related to the broad field of Cognitive Psychology.  You will need to be as specific as possible so that the paper is not overwhelming. All topics should be approved
The goal is to select a topic that interests you and then to conduct library and online research to learn as much about the topic as possible.  You will then communicate your findings back to me through your written literature review.  As should be intuitive, a literature review should attempt to synthesize all published research related to a given topic (i.e., it reviews the literature).  To wit, literature reviews most often culminate with a tentative research proposal for a new study to be conducted on the topic.  As such, it is best to begin your research with a specific question about human behavior that might be answered through a new study.  For example, how do humans use memory for prior experiences when interpreting complex visual stimuli (i.e., how does our past help us figure out what we are looking at now?).  Absolutely no quotations are allowed! (Minimum of 10 research articles must be used)
Completing this assignment will require you to use numerous research journals (both empirical and review) and possibly your textbook.  Utmost care should be taken to avoid plagiarism (i.e., if it was not your original insight or language, cite the original).  That being said, this paper is to be written by you, the student, and not by the authors of your sources
There is no formal requirement for sections to this paper.  That is, you can structure the paper similar to a long introduction section from an empirical research article.  If you choose to implement section headers, please be careful to do so only when necessary and useful and do so according to APA style.
When searching for a topic it may help to browse the contents of the textbook and ask yourself what questions you might have about the various topics we will cover in the class.  Here are some examples to help get you started:
How does our attention system work to allow us to multi‐task in a modern environment, such as driving a car while talking on a cell phone?  How did this system evolve?
What do people with synesthesia demonstrate about the way we perceive stimuli around us as recognizable patterns?
Do different parts of our brains perceive different aspects of vision (e.g., color vs. motion)?
Are categories of naturally occurring phenomenon (e.g., colors) the same across all cultures?
What are the components of working memory?
How does learning two languages as a child effect your scores on standardized tests?
Be creative and do not just use the examples that I provided.  Think about what interests you most as that will make this the best paper for you to write and for me to read.  Come up with several possible questions that interest you and I will help to guide you in the best direction in terms of available research and depth of topic.
