Hi! I’m Kir and the characteristics that I use to describe myself are loyal, funny, critical, determined, stoic, empathetic, courageous, flexible, slightly ambitious, stubborn, and helpful.
I am shaped by the people, circumstances and experiences in my life. Each role that I have played (daughter, sister, employee, wife, mother, manager, volunteer), every lesson I’ve learned, and each decision that I have made both big and small has left its mark on me and propelled my personal evolution forward. The person I was at 22 is different from who I was at 32 and different again from who I am today. I like to think that I keep becoming a better version of myself but that could be just another self-illusion. The positive self-illusion I use the most is the downward social comparison to make myself feel better. I am very self-aware and self-critical and I’m constantly shifting my perspective to focus on more the positive aspects of my life to avoid ruminating on negative thoughts (Safdar & Sanderson, 2021, p. 46). By making the downward social comparisons I can adjust how I perceive my own characteristics and experiences and while it might not be the best strategy, it has helped me improve my mental state when I’m really feeling low (Makridakis, S., & Moleskis, A. (2015).
My family culture has played the biggest role in how I define myself and make decisions. The values that I have been surrounded by have helped shaped me and continue to influence the choices I make and how I move forward in life. My family is at the centre of my world and the shared values guide how I live. There is a huge emphasis on hard work, loyalty, ethics, compassion and helpfulness that runs deep in my family and these values have shaped who I am, the goals that I set and how I make decisions. Sometimes, I feel the ingrained cultural pressure is heavy and it holds me back because I have to uphold these high value traits even when they might not be in my best interests but are in the interest of ‘the greater good’.

Write an essay using psychoanalysis to explain a characters personality of your choosing. The essay must follow the following format
AT LEAST 5 full pages in length. Double spaced, Times New Roman 12 sized Font
Begin your paper at the very top of the page. 
Paragraph 1: introduce the essay and Character. Give a brief description of the characters history and demographics.
Paragraph 2: Psychosexual stage fixation . If no fixation, explain why
Define the stage the character is fixated on. Explain what should happen in that stage in order for the person to move on successfully through the stage. Explain what might have happened to the character that made them fixated on this stage.
Paragraph 3: Id , ego ,superego define all three
Where is the most psychic energy devoted in this character? What leads you to believe this?
Paragraph 4: What defense mechanism/Mechanisms does this character employ?
Define the defense mechanism , give two examples
Why was this defense employed ? What was the character avoiding?
Paragraph 5 : How would psycho analysis help this person? Include techniques and rationale behind psychoanalysis as a means of changing personality.
Conclusion: wrap up the essay by briefly reiterating what you have already covered. Try to give a summarizing sentence or two that describes the characters personality. What limitations does psychoanalysis have when it comes to understanding personality? End with a question or what other mechanism/modality you might use to study this characters personality.

As I sit down to write this post, I find this discussion topic to be rather difficult. It truly forces one to be introspective, something that I realize I do not do very often. Initially, what came to mind is that I am a woman and a wife. However, this saddened me because I am much more than just my gender and marital status. Having lived through the traumatic experience of having an alcoholic father, it truly shaped me into the person I am today. Knowing I did not want a life like his, I worked hard to become a Dental Hygienist and am now finishing my degree at the University of Guelph. Although growing up in this household was difficult, it allowed me to develop the self-concept traits of being hardworking, patient, and adaptable.
Some positive self-illusions I often demonstrate are the self-serving beliefs of unrealistic optimism and perceived control. Unsurprisingly, negative experiences were frequent in my childhood, and I lived through them. I often find myself believing that things aren’t really as bad as they could be, and because I lived through such negative experiences, only positive experiences are more likely to occur now. Similarly, growing up in a household of unpredictability caused me to create a need for control. I often find myself believing I can control the uncontrollable and create a predictable outcome.
I grew up in a Polish household, and perhaps as a child, I would define myself as being Polish and embracing the traditions that come with the heritage. But now that I am older, and my parents are deceased, I am no longer surrounded by much Polish culture. Instead, I would say that my values are influenced by Canadian culture, and thus, I have a more independent self-construal when it comes to my cultural influences.
