“The Impact of Sleep Quality on Next-Day Memory Recall in College Students: A Literature Review and Research Proposal Introduction” The Impact of Sleep Quality on Daily Cognitive Performance: A Longitudinal Study
Throughout the term, you will work on portions of a Research Proposal which will be submitted as a completed assignment in the last week of the course. The purpose of the Research Proposal is to provide learners with the opportunity to apply course learnings to design an original experiment and conduct a literature review. You will apply your understanding of statistical concepts to the research and compile a completed proposal, though you will not actually submit the proposal or conduct the experiment.
This week, you will complete your Research Proposal Introduction by combining your literature review with an overview of your topic and proposed study. You will begin your proposal introduction by identifying the specific problem area (what it is, why it is important) and the prevalence/scope of the problem. You should then lead into your literature review which you completed last week. Lastly, you should state the purpose of your study and research question(s), including hypotheses if applicable.
Your response should be 750 words or more (with the inclusion of last week’s literature review), and should be submitted in APA format.
This is my paper from last week, so we will need to use it to complete the assignment.
The
Influence of Sleep Quality on Next-Day Memory Recall in College Students
Research Question:
1. How
do variations in sleep quality (duration, interruptions, and sleep stage
proportions) affect memory recall accuracy and speed in college students during
academic tests?
Literature Review
In
their 2022 longitudinal research, Almarzouki and colleagues investigated the
influence of sleep quality and mental health on working memory and academic
success within a cohort of university students. The study took 83 students who
were asked to complete the CANTAB test to assess their sleep quality, mental
health (including depression and anxiety levels), and working memory over a
non-academic summer and academic term. Apart from that, I used a statistical
technique such as Pearson correlations and multiple regression analyses to
understand the correlations between these variables. The data showed that worse
mental health was associated with poor sleep quality, but work memory improved
during the term and was also linked to high GPA scores.
The study is commendable for its longitudinal approach, which makes
it possible to observe changes over time and use objective measures to assess
working memory. However, the reliance on a relatively small sample and the
focus merely on medical students may be limiting factors in the
generalizability of the results. Moreover, the self-reporting of sleep and
mental health may create response biases; hence, the reliability of the
findings will be affected. In conclusion, the study provides valuable information,
but the interpretations must be made considering the limitations.
The study by Xie et al. (2019) is focused on how poor everyday
sleep quality impacts visual working memory (WM) capacity and precision,
regardless of factors such as depressed mood and age. Using a short-term recall
exercise in two studies, they estimate the amount and accuracy of information
in working memory and the participants’ sleep quality and mood states. The
first study of college students reveals that both sleep quality and depressed
mood act independently to reduce working memory capacity but not to affect
working memory precision. The second study extends the findings to a more
general community sample with the same result: the quality of sleep and mood
are the factors that affect the width but not the precision of the working
memory capacity, which is instead regulated by age.
The study is remarkable for the robust methodology, which includes the
approach of a longitudinal study and the use of well-defined statistical
methods to separate the impact of sleep quality on mood and age. On the other
hand, it comes with some drawbacks. Self-reporting measures for sleep and mood
could be biased, and the focus on visual working memory does not apply to other
types of memory and cognitive functions. On the other hand, the study is
beneficial because it shows that factors such as sleep and mood can influence
cognitive performance.
In the study by Yu et al. (2022), they explored how sleep quality disturbances were associated
with cognitive performance on the following day in young individuals through a
long-term design that was highly detailed. The sample of 73 students ranging
from 4th grade to 12th grade was followed up over a semester for daily changes
in cognitive function and sleep quality. The data obtained indicated that sleep
quality greatly affected the daily variations of mental function. Even more
interesting is that those who had consistently poor sleep quality showed better
cognitive function after a good night’s sleep, while those who had good sleep
quality on average were affected negatively by perfect sleep.
The study’s strength is its longitudinal approach with a high degree of
daily granularity, which facilitates understanding the relationship between
sleep and cognitive function. However, it might be that self-reported sleep
quality may be biased, and the fact that the study is focused on students
limits the generalizability of the findings to other age groups. However, along
with these drawbacks, the study still offers the key to developing such
educational strategies based on sleep management to maximize daily cognitive
performance.

“Case Assessment and Intervention Planning for Nara: Coping with Grief and Guilt After the Sudden Death of a Spouse”
Case Assessment and Intervention Planning: Students will complete three case reports. Utilizing your beginning understanding of crisis work, for this assignment you are being asked to perform a case assessment on a clinical scenario assigned by the instructor. Rate the client in each of the three domains (Affective, Behavioral, and Cognitive) using the Severity Scale included with each domain on the Triage Assessment Form (TAF) and total the scores. Describe, in detail, the rationale for your ratings
Summarize diagnostic skills and techniques that can be used to screen for addiction, aggression, and danger to self and others, as you note these risks in your client, such as the Hybrid Model and the ABC’s of Assessing Crisis Intervention found
in Chapter 3 of your text. Similarly, a possible co-occurring mental disorder (such as substance abuse) may become apparent during a crisis, disaster, or other trauma-causing event that ties in with your assessment during the client’s crisis. Include your judgment about how intense and directive the treatment should be based upon the total TAF score. Drawing on the theoretical and research literature, develop and propose intervention designed to address the crisis. Your assessment will ideally provide the rationale for your proposed intervention, as will crisis theory and clinical research literatures. The proposal should be sensitive to issues of diversity. Nara, age 40, lost her husband of 20 years approximately 4 years earlier after an acute illness. He had been well up to 2 days prior to death, and they had imminent travel plans until the point his illness turned grave with complications. Nara is still shocked that her husband died so suddenly. She felt like “someone had cut her in two with a saw.”
Nara was a successful professional who had maintained the apartment she and her husband shared as though it were a museum. She has been unable to live there after his death and instead has moved in with her elderly mother and older sister in an apartment. She periodically visits her own apartment for which she continues to pay rent, but cannot tolerate spending the night there. Nara is aware that she is unable to move on with her life. Even more than missing her husband, her primary issue is a paralyzing sense of guilt. This is the result of her perceived failure to honor her religion’s tenets and practices in terms of a wake, funeral and burial (she was raised as a strict Catholic) after his death. Contrary to her beliefs, he requested that he be cremated and that she do whatever she wanted with his ashes as long as it did not include a ceremony of any sort, including a memorial. She feels that she did not give him the proper send-off.
Nara has stopped going to church and her gym, has lost 20 pounds and has been noted by family members to just sit in her chair for multiple hours at a time without talking or watching television or listening to the radio. -
“Surviving the Pandemic: Coping Strategies and Positive Distractions” “Mid-Week Reflection and Peer Responses” Mid-Week Reflection and Peer Responses: A Time for Self-Reflection and Collaboration
The readings on sleep discuss what is known as seasonal affective disorder. As the days get shorter there is less opportunity for exposure to daylight. That can result in one’s circadian rhythm becoming out of sync, causing sleep disturbances and feelings of depression. In a normal year there are increases in reported cases of depression, suicides and suicide attempts, domestic disturbances as well as increases in alcohol and drug abuse during the winter months. I’ve mentioned before my concerns about the effect of the measures taken at the height of the Pandemic. The lock downs and shuttering of places where social gatherings normally took place such as bars, restaurants, clubs, gyms, schools and churches severely limited opportunities for social interaction. But as social animals we need that interaction. For many the level of social isolation experienced generated feelings of depression because spending time isolated from others often causes people to start spending more time ruminating on their thoughts, particularly negative thoughts. Yet another factor was a sense of uncertainty and lack of control over the events affecting one’s life that are also tied to feelings of depression. And as people start to feel depressed they often turn to alcohol and drugs in an attempt to self-medicate and feel better. In the short-term that may provide an escape, but in the long-term it generally increases feelings of depression. Looking back at the Fall and Winter seasons of 2020 and 2021 it was a perfect storm scenario as all of these negative factors were coming together at the same time. All factors that play a role in depression. Many people were simply not equipped to deal with it. In terms of mental health the potential for disaster was recognized early on by mental health professionals. And there were indeed increases in alcohol use, drug use, overdose cases, domestic abuse and suicides. Although we’re coming out of the pandemic and most of the restrictions are easing, there are still lingering effects concerning mental health.
Now for this discussion, I’d like you to look at this from the opposite point of view. How did each of you manage, and how are each of you still managing to deal with all of this? Share your ideas on coping strategies, ways of distracting yourself from negative thoughts and whatever else you’ve found that helped you stay positive amidst all that disrupted our lives for such an extended period.
In my own case I made it a point to get out and take a walk everyday, which allowed me to get some sun and clear my head. Puttering about on the balcony with my plants provided similar benefits. I was also doing a lot of writing as I worked on expanding on my lecture handouts to generate the readings for this class as well as coming up with ideas for the reflections and discussions. Although a lot of work, it was also a positive and creative exercise that provided a sense of accomplishment. Another thing I worked on throughout the pandemic was trying to improve on my cooking abilities. All those years of watching MasterChef Junior finally paid off. I can honestly say I’m now able to cook like a ten-year-old. Salads, pasta dishes, tuna, salmon, chicken, chops, steaks are among those that I can now successfully prepare with a certain degree of skill that I never really developed before. And then there was Roku. All sorts of fun distractions were to be found on Roku. 🙂
So that’s the idea, share with each other how you effectively dealt with life during the pandemic. Hopefully we can learn from each other and generate a kind of pandemic during winter survival guide. With the world population steadily increasing (now over 8 billion) and an ever expanding global economy it’s just a matter of time before something like this recurs. We really can’t be sure that governments will handle it any better when that happens. But, we can learn how to cope with it ourselves as best as possible. Try to make your initial submission by the middle of the week. Then respond to a couple of your peers by 11:59 pm Sunday. -
