  • Idea Development Presentation: Exploring the “What” and “Why” in Research

    For this discussion, you will largely use the information you presented in the Research Paper: Idea Development Assignment (even though it may have not yet been graded).
    Research begins with an idea. Research is also best developed with input from others, and the dissemination of completed research requires, in most cases, a peer review process. A graduate student’s ability to present an idea, propose a way to test that idea as part of the development of research, and give and receive feedback in the process of that development is a very important skill. The ability to present information in a professional manner is a part of this. For this discussion, you will present an overview of your idea development to this point, to include a summary of your literature review, initial focus and hypotheses, variables, and other information that will be helpful to give your reader sufficient information to provide you with good peer-reviewed feedback to help you further develop your project.  You will in turn do the same to help them develop theirs.
    It is also good practice to be able to present information succinctly, yet thoroughly, within a prescribed time limit. Therefore, your videos must be between 3 and 5 minutes in length.
    PROMPT – For this discussion, you must:
    Create a PowerPoint to use in your video with all the required information presented in a way that is beneficial to your reader/viewer. It should be detailed enough to provide the information required, but not overly wordy or cluttered so that the information is lost.
    Submit a recorded video of yourself presenting the information for your project, using the PowerPoint you created (both your face and the PowerPoint must be visible).
    Additional Guidelines:
    Present your idea and research focus in a way that demonstrates the “what” in research.
    Present your idea in a way that justifies the “why” (or gap and purpose) in research. That is, your idea and current focus must address the “so what” question.
    Support your idea and presentation with a demonstration from previous research and a biblical foundation. You should only include a sampling of the previous research for this assignment.
    Identify your hypotheses and variables as you have in mind at this point, though it is not expected that you will have these finalized. The goal is that you are thinking in this direction, and you can accept feedback from others to help with that development.
    Present all applicable parts in APA format, including correctly cited and referenced sources. Be sure to include a reference page/slide at the end of your PowerPoint.
    Please review the Discussion Assignment Instructions Download Discussion Assignment Instructionsprior to posting. You may also click the three dots in the upper corner to Show Rubric.
    Parameters:  Video length must be 3-5 minutes. Points deducted for exceeding the limit. No file attachments (mp4, ppt., etc.) accepted.  Videos should be embedded into the post.
    Post-First: This course utilizes the Post-First feature in all Discussions. This means you will only be able to read and interact with your classmates’ threads after you have submitted your thread in response to the provided prompt.
    Submit your thread by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday of Module 2: Week 2.

  • “Finding Happiness: A Counseling Approach for a Character in Need from Harry Potter or Percy Jackson”

    For this paper you are going to utilize popular media to identify a client in need.  This paper will include the following:
    Identify a character from Harry Potter or Percy Jackson.
    Diagnose that character with a psychological disorder from the DSM-V;
    Explain why you feel the character should be diagnosed with that psychology disorder (use the DSM-V criteria);
    Identify a best practice therapeutic approach that would best meet the need of the character. Incorporate how you would address any legal, ethical, and cross-cultural issues that may arise based on the context of your character.
    Develop a minimum of Three treatment goals for the character (explain why you felt these should be the treatment goals); and
    Based on the best practice therapeutic approach you identified, describe what the character would experience and how would that person improve over the course of a 10-week counseling program.
    Your paper will also include a title page, headers (Introduction, Diagnosis, Therapeutic Approach, Treatment Goals, Program), and a reference page.  Title and reference pages do not count towards your minimum page count.
    Assignment Characteristics for the Capstone Paper:
    Pedagogical Method – Experiential learning: Students will identify a character from a movie, book, or television series, diagnose that character, identify an applicable counseling theoretical approach, develop a treatment plan, and conceptualize a 10-week counseling program for that individual.
    X Factor Element – Finding Happiness: Students will develop a deeper understanding of an abnormal psychology issue that they are interested in.  They will discover the feeling of empowerment as they develop their skills in diagnosing, treatment planning, and the development of a counseling program.  This will have an influence on their sense of being a student (academic), person (self-concept), and as a professional (opening their mind to differential diagnosing and treatment options).
    Student Ideas – Long-Term Project: This assignment is introduced early in the semester and the concepts and themes learned throughout this course will be implemented in the delivery of this paper.
    You must have a minimum of 10 credible sources.
