Case study: Ethical and Legal issues #1
Sally hired Steve 11 months ago on the surgical unit. His references at his previous place of                    employment were glowing, Sally notices that he works well with staff members, and his patients         seem to be highly satisfied with the nursing care they receive from him. Brianne, one of the staff        nurses, reports to Sally that Steve seems to be overly friendly with female patients. Sally asks Brianne to explain what she means. Brianne whispers to Sally, “I overheard Steve ask several female patients  for their phone numbers, and he is spending extra time with female patients. Today, he asked me to  switch patients with him, so he would have more female patients.” Sally has not received any patient complaints about Steve. As the nurse leader, Sally decides to wait until someone actually witnesses  an event; after all, Steve is a competent practicing nurse.

Case study:Staffing Conflict  #2
Gender, cultural, and generational differences add to the challenges of interpersonal                             communication, especially when mixed in a stressful healthcare environment. Many times the           conflict progresses and may involve some level of bullying. You recently graduated from an                RN-to-DNP program, you belong to the millennial generation (also called Generation Y), and you       were just promoted to Director of Critical Care Services. It feels like you have been in school forever, but you still managed to work 20-30 hours/week as a charge nurse on a busy cardiovascular (CV)    step-down unit throughout school.
1. The Nurse Manager from your CV ICU, who is a female and belongs to the Baby Boomer generation, has informed you she is closing four beds for the night shift due to inadequate staffing levels. When you object to her plan, she states, “You don’t know what you are talking about; this is what is done when you don’t have enough staff.”
Describe the type of conflict this represents and the source(s).
2. You present the staffing dilemma to your Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), who is a male and also          belongs to the Baby Boomer generation. The CNO responds by stating, “Your nurse manager’s             solution is not an option. I hired you for this job because of your education, clinical experience, and   ability to bring new ideas to the department. Closing beds is not an option; figure it out.” Apply the    best resolution strategy to address:

Case study: Effective Delegating #3
As a nurse leader, you recognize that everyone at all levels of the health care organization is being    asked to do more and accept more responsibility. Therefore, it seems inappropriate to ask your         Charge Nurse to take on another task or responsibility. However, you also realize that you must focus your efforts to be the most productive for the entire unit.
1. Discuss strategies to overcome the tendency to under delegate appropriate tasks to your charge   nurse.
2. Reflect on a time when you delegated a task to an unlicensed assistive person.

Case study: Quality Patient Care/Time management #4
A poor outcome has occurred for a patient, Mrs. Earle, who was admitted for a routine                      cholecystectomy. An investigation is conducted to find out what happened and how the poor       outcome could have been prevented. Maria Blanco, the RN who was on shift that day, must think back to her prioritization and organization of patient care.
The scene begins in the nurse manager’s office with nurse manager, Roxanne Jamison, prompting Maria, the staff nurse who was working that day, to recall her organization and prioritization of   patient care. Flashback to Maria starting her shift, when the charge nurse gave Maria a                  change-of-shift report for her four patients. We see shots of each patient as they are described.
What could Maria have done differently in prioritizing patient care after receiving her             assignments?
Are there any members of the health care team to whom Maria could have appropriately    delegated any tasks?

For this assignment you will create an engaging, 20-minute recorded presentation of a chronic health problem related to a particular body system. Presentations topics will be assigned by your instructor. This assignment may be completed alone or in groups of 2-3 people, as outlined or decided by your instructor.
Your presentation should include an overview of the health problem identified, an in-depth review of the associated anatomy and physiology, an overview of treatment methodologies, and information related to the needs of the patient and/or family related to the problem. Suicidal Ideation and Depression in Adolescent
The patient is a 15‐year‐old Puerto Rican adolescent female living with both her parents and a younger sibling. Her parents presented with significant marital problems, had been separated several times and were discussing divorce. Her mother reported having a history of psychiatric treatment for depression and anxiety and indicated that the patient’s father suffered from bipolar disorder and had been receiving psychiatric treatment. He was hospitalized on multiple occasions during previous years for serious psychiatric symptoms.
The patient is failing several classes in school, and her family was in the process of looking for a new school due to her failing grades and difficulties getting along with her classmates. She presented the following symptoms: frequent sadness and crying, increased appetite and overeating, guilt, low self‐concept, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, hopelessness, and difficulty concentrating. In addition, she presented difficulties in her interpersonal relationships, persistent negative thoughts about her appearance and scholastic abilities, as well as guilt regarding her parents’ marital problems. She states that sometimes she feels the world would never know if she disappeared.
The patient’s medical history reveals that she suffers from asthma, used eyeglasses, and is overweight. Her mother reported that she had been previously diagnosed with MDD 3 years ago and was treated intermittently for 2 years with supportive psychotherapy and anti‐depressants (fluoxetine and sertraline; no dosage information available). This first episode was triggered by rejection by a boy for whom she had romantic feelings. Her most recent episode appeared to be related to her parents’ marital problems and to academic and social difficulties at school.

Discharge Plan
The purpose of this assignment is to gain an understanding on what goes into a discharge plan. For assignment 3, using the case study, you will create a discharge plan for a patient using the attached Discharge Plan document.  You are to complete all sections of the discharge plan:  assessment, diagnosis/plan, education needs, financial worksheet, and the reflection and conclusion.  You need to be as detailed as possible in filling out all the boxes. The reflection and conclusion section allows you to summarize the patient’s plan of care based on all proceeding information and to make recommendations for the plan of care for the patient.  Reflect on what you learned in this activity.  What do you think about using this discharge plan, did it help you to consider areas you might not have previously included in a discharge plan?  Please follow the example discharge plan provided for your guidance. 
You can type right into the document, save it, and submit for grading. What necessary community resources and referrals will the patient need? What, if any, special equipment, or supplies might the patient need? You may not find all the information you need for the discharge plan in the case study.  So, you need to research the patient’s condition, etc. to help you complete sections of the discharge plan. Case Study
Mr. Joe Jones, who is 75 years of age, is being discharged home after having a right knee replacement. “I am glad that the surgery is over.  Now, I can walk without a walker and pain.” He lives in a one level home independently.  His wife died last year. He has private insurance.  Mr. Jones is a retired engineer and can meet his financial needs for daily living.  His allergies include penicillin and seasonal allergies. The discharge orders from the orthopedic surgeon include continuous passive motion (CPM) at the current setting of 0-degree angle. Patient to use crutch extensions when walking with crutches for upper body support (non-weight-bearing post discharge day 1 and may begin weight-bearing post-discharge day 2); and home nurse visits, as needed. Physical therapy should begin the day after discharge at an orthopedic center. Dressing changes BID until stitches are removed 14 days post-op.  Clean with normal saline and apply clean, dry dressing with paper tape.  The prescriptions will be faxed to the center. The following medications with prescriptions attached include: Lovenox (enoxaparin) 70 mg subcutaneously once daily for 7 days, Vicodin (hydrocodone bitartrate) 10 mg every 4 hours PRN, and Colace (docusate sodium) 100 mg every day. The patient is to follow up with the orthopedic surgeon in 3 weeks. His daughter, Nancy, plans to stay with him for several weeks to assist him with meals and household chores, and take him to physical therapy and the orthopedic surgeon for follow-up. Mr. Jones has three other children, Kevin, Lucy, and John, who live in other states. He is a widower and attends a local church. He volunteers as an usher every Sunday. He has a past medical history of a colon resection related to acute diverticulitis and arthritis. Mr. Jones uses ibuprophen 200-400 mg prn for pain.
