  • “Outbreak Alert: A CDC Epidemiologist’s Report on a Food-Borne Illness”

    Discussion:
For the Discussion Board this week, you will pretend to be an epidemiologist working at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, GA. An outbreak of a food-borne illness has occurred, and it is your job to report this to the public. Have fun with this!
Here are the specific directions for the Module this week:
1). Research a specific pathogen that would be involved in an outbreak of a food-borne illness. For example: Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, Clostridium botulinum, Clostirdium perfringens, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, etc.
The following references (and many others) may be helpful.

2). Present your case study to the class. In your presentation, please include the following information:
Where and when your ‘outbreak’ occurred and how many cases have been reported
The specific food source that was linked to the outbreak
The specific pathogen responsible for this outbreak
How was this pathogen identified as the cause of this outbreak?
    5. The morphology of the organism: What is the Gram stain result?
The signs and symptoms that would be seen in the patient as a result of this infection
What the public needs to know about how this infectious disease can be treated and prevented
Options for presentation: 1. Post a 3-5 minute video of your announcement. Make a 3-5 minute video informing the public about this
outbreak and how to prevent it. For this video, you can use your own technology and upload the file to your
discussion board site or you can create this right in your discussion board response. To do this, click on the
‘Reply’ tab in your discussion board. Click on the ‘film’ icon on the tool bar. Create and save your video.
    2. Create Prezi presentation or a Powerpoint presentation including all of the required information.
    3. Remember that you must include at least 2 scientific references in correct APA format.
3). Review your peers’ presentations and have fun responding to at least 2 of these. Please add some information
about the specific pathogens discussed in order to have a more meaningful discussion.
note I rally would like you to Create Prezi presentation or a Powerpoint presentation. let me know if you need anything else

  • Lab Reports on Unknown Bacterial Species from Clinical Specimen

To complete this assignment, you will receive a clinical specimen.  Your clinical specimen might be from a patient wound, stool, throat, vagina, urinary tract, cerebral spinal fluid, or sputum from the lower respiratory tract. Your clinical specimen will have two unknown bacterial species.  One of the species will be a Gram positive coccus and the other will be a Gram negative bacillus. I will send you the results of the tests for your clinical specimen, and you will use the flow charts to determine the identity of each species. Next, you will write up two reports; one for the Gram positive cocci and one for the Gram negative bacillus.
How To Determine Your Unknown Using a Flow Chart
Using the Results Sheet I send you, you are to follow the flow charts to come up with the correct identifications.
For example, suppose your Results Sheet says that one of the Unknowns is a Gram positive coccus.  That means you use the Gram positive cocci flow chart.  For that Gram positive unknown, suppose it tells you that the catalase test was negative.  That means you follow the flow chart on the catalase negative branch. The next test is then cefoxitin. If it says in the Result Sheet that it grew up to the disk, that means it is resistant to cefoxitin. So you follow that branch and it ends with the name of the species, GpA.
For each report, you are asked to put in an abbreviated flow chart based on the tests that you would have run.  For example, for the unknown Gram positive cocci shown above, you would draw in just the branches where you see the red arrows:
You take the same approach with your Gram Negative Bacillus, but you use the Gram Negative Bacillus flow chart.
How to Write the Lab Report
You are to write 2 lab reports on your patient. One report will be on the Gram Positive Cocci and the other will be on the Gram Negative Bacilli.
Each report must follow these instructions:
At the top of the page, draw the appropriate abbreviated flow chart for the isolate. This should be a shortened version of the appropriate flow chart on page 93; use only the branches you followed to identify your isolate. At the end of the last branch of the flow chart, write out the scientific name of your isolate. Check for the following:
the first time you list a species, use the entire name.
the first letter of the genus is capitalized; the species is entirely lower case.
the entire name should be underlined or in italics
For the text use paragraph form. Do not use numbers or bullets. Include the following:
    First paragraph:
    1) Identify the body site the patient specimen came from and the specimen numbe
    2) Give the results of your microscopy:
    gram stain reaction
    morphology
    cell arrangement
    Describe the colony characteristics
    B. Second paragraph
    1) Refer to the flow chart and tell me about each test
    A) Tell me what you tested for.  For example, “I tested the isolate for an enzyme called catalase” or “I tested the isolate to see if it can use citrate as a sole carbon source”
    B) For each test:
tell me what media or reagents you used.
tell me the results of the test.  What did you observe? For example, did the hydrogen peroxide bubble, or did the lactose tube turn yellow?
tell me the interpretation of the results. For example,  “The bubbling indicates that the organism produces the enzyme catalase” or “The yellow color tells me that this                                                      isolate can ferment lactose.”
    C. Third paragraph
    1)  As a conclusion, tell me:
    a) The identification of the patient isolate.
    b) Refer to Appendix D. Look for the name of the patient isolate in the list for the patient’s body site. Tell me if the patient’s organism is typically:
    -normal flora
    -pathogen
    -neither
    -both
Combine the worksheet and your two reports into one Word document and then submit your reports.

  • Reflection on Labs 1-3 Reflection on Labs 1-3 In Labs 1-3, I have learned a lot about the foundations of psychology and research methods. One of the key concepts that stood out to me was the importance

For this discussion, I would like for you to reflect on what you have learned so far from Labs 1-3. In doing so, I hope this gives you an opportunity to review the material and revisit concepts.
    1. Your first post will be your reflection. This activity is flexible so choose the method you feel would best help your understanding,
    • You can summarize content: Reflect on the content presented thus far in labs 1-3. You can summarize key terms, theories or procedures. Don’t worry about getting every content in your post.
    • Include Personal Insight: You may want to include how learning about these topics helped you understand something you have encountered in the field. Did you make connections with topics you have previously studied? Were you able to connect the content to work situations?
    • Length: Let’s aim for 200-300 words for your initial post. This should help you narrow your scope without getting too overwhelmed by the details.

Pick one bacterial, one viral, and one eukaryotic pathogen (for a total of three organisms) of the digestive, circulatory, lymphatic, and/or nervous systems. Discuss the following for your three chosen organisms:
    Modes of transmission

    Associated diseases

  • Title: “The Similarities and Differences in Anatomical Syndromes Caused by Different Pathogens”

Some diseases are known as anatomical syndromes because they have similar signs and symptoms despite having different causative agents. A few examples include impetigo, cellulitis, neonatal conjunctivitis, keratitis, meningitis, acute and subacute encephalitis, and sepsis. For the discussion this week, select two pathogens that cause one of these anatomical syndromes and then discuss
signs and symptoms of the disease,
the virulence factors of each of the two pathogens, and
a possible explanation for why two different pathogens cause the same disease.
    or
Mosquitos are biological vectors for many diseases, including West Nile virus, malaria, and yellow fever. Some scientists have advocated for the elimination of mosquitos to prevent the transmission of these diseases. Write a discussion either in support of or against eliminating mosquitos.
Use your own words. Use 2 scholarly sources (one being the one listed below). APA format. Cited.
