  • “Exploring Criminal Justice Perspectives: Reflections on Guest Speaker Presentations and NIJ Training”

View a minimum of three (3) previously recorded, live zoom guest speaker presentations.
Students may view additional speaker events and complete tasks as described below for
additional credits. ALL students must view in their entirety, at least 3 presentations as
part of the internship this semester. Create a word or pdf document, and list each of the 3
speaker videos you viewed, and provide a brief, 3-4 sentence description of the
presentation. Submit this to the dropbox provided.
Group 2: Additional Alternative Projects – Each student must select ONE (1) project per 3
credits of internship they have registered.
Option 1: Criminal Justice Guest Speaker Series:
Speakers enhance students’ learning experience by bringing criminal justice perspectives
to the classroom. The speakers are or have been practitioners in the criminal justice
system both in the public and private sectors. They will represent the levels of law
enforcement (federal, state, municipal) and prosecution, defense, the courts, corrections,
and juvenile justice. They will give students a better understanding and appreciation of
    the criminal justice system.
Per the group 1 instructions above, all students must view a minimum of 3 speakers and
submit a very brief description. If however, you would like to augment this task in order
for it to qualify for your group 2, full project, you must draft a more detailed, robust
    reflection paper on each presentation.
To receive 3 credits for this assignment, you must view 4 speaker videos (so you may use
the three viewed per group 1 above, and select one additional speaker video to watch),
    and prepare a reflection paper.
    Reflection Paper Rubric:
For each class presenter, you will submit a 1000 word typed paper addressing some of
    these points:
    i. A critical analysis of the presentation that addresses such questions as in what
ways did the presentation reinforce or weaken ideas you already believed to be
    true?
ii. How have any of your previous courses or readings been related to the
    comments of the speaker?
iii. What dynamics in the speaker’s life seemed to influence his perspective on a
    particular issue?
iv. What did you particularly like about the speaker’s presentation; consider
delivery, content, applicability to current or past internships; what did you
    particularly dislike?
Remember, the paper is not solely an overview or summation of what the speaker said,
nor is your paper limited to the points noted above. You may also wish to relate the
speaker’s material to past or current courses at ESU.
You may wish to query (Google/Lexis/Nexis) about the speaker or the agency. This may
assist you in drafting your questions.
Option 2. Visit the website for the National Institute of Justice (NIJ): www.nij.gov
    a. Here, you will navigate through the site and find pre-recorded
trainings/presentations/webinars. You can even sign up for live presentations if you are
