  • Title: The Role of Public Policies in Shaping Market Outcomes: A Critical Analysis of Amartya Sen’s Quote on Globalism

    “…The market system does not work by itself, globally or domestically. Market outcomes are massively influenced by public policies in education, health, credit, and the law.” (Amartya Sen, How to Judge Globalism, in The American Prospect, Winter 2002.) 
    This research/analytical paper will test your understanding and significance of the quotation(above) and will require you to critically examine the main ideas of the arguments contained therein about one another. 
    Thus you must: (a.) explain the main arguments) of the quotations; (b.) present an argument about the material based upon your own opinion; and (c.) defend your argument using evidence from the quotation and any other material you may have encountered through our classes that you also see as being relevant to your argument. You must use sections of the quotation to provide evidence for both your explication and analysis.
    Use the following three theories about IPE and explain how and why they help you understand the above quote: (a.) economic liberalism, including embedded liberalism and neoliberalism; (b.) feminism; and (c.) Marxism;
