  • Exploring the Different Perspectives on Love in Plato’s Symposium

Written assignments are designed to help you analyze the reading. Simple restatements or summaries of ideas will not be accepted. What does this mean? You are expected to interpret and analyze what you have read and express that analysis in your own words. It will be tempting to respond to a question by giving me an exact quote from the reading. Only use quotes in support of your own ideas. Remember, it is only a quote if you use quotation marks and cite your sources. If you do not use quotation marks, it is plagiarism. It may also be tempting to do outside research and respond using the words of another person. This is also plagiarism. Plagiarism or cheating of any kind will not be tolerated. Plagiarism is defined as copying words or ideas and presenting them as your own work.
    A NOTE ON A.I.:
Any work written, developed, created, or inspired by artificial intelligence (AI) is considered plagiarism and will not be tolerated. All assignments will be submitted through a program called “TurnItIn.” This program identifies plagiarism, AI-generated information, and “humanized” AI-generated information. While new developments with AI will find their place in our workforces and personal lives, in the realm of education and learning, this kind of technology does not belong. A.I. robs us of the opportunity to learn from our experiences and from each other, to explore our creativity, to problem-solve, and to contribute our ideas in authentic ways. College is a place for learning, and this class is specifically a space for learning how to improve critical thinking skills. AI simply cannot do that learning for us.
Students caught using AI, plagiarizing, or cheating in any way, will receive an “F” for the assignment or exam. You may read about DVC’s academic integrity policy. This assignment is worth 6% (or 6 points).
I do not deduct points for spelling or grammar mistakes (although I often correct them – I can’t help myself as a teacher), but please make an effort to proofread your work.
I will be giving you feedback on each written assignment. Please learn how to access this feedback. It will be an important part of preparing for the tests.
In at least 200 words, please respond to the following prompts about your reading (from 178b to 193e of The Symposium).
Please number your answers and use Word or PDF format.

  • Title: Text Conversations Behind Famous Paintings

You are going to find paintings by the following artists, and then you are going to create a text conversation behind it. Create a conversation between the artist and someone else
they may know, OR create a conversation between the individuals in the actual painting,
explaining what led up to the scene in the painting. You can use the fake text message
conversation creator here: https://ifaketextmessage.com/ or if you have another
application you like better, like Canva, thats fine too.
You must create a conversation for THREE of the following artists:
    – Caravaggio
    – Artemisia Gentileschi
    – Bernini
    – Jan Vermeer
    – Rembrandt
    – Diego Velasquez
    – Peter Paul Rubens
    – Nicholas Poussin
    INSTRUCTIONS:
    1) Pick one of their paintings or sculptures that speak to you and create a text conversation
    based on that image
    2) The conversation should be at least 4 messages per person (4 imcoming and 4
    outgoing), but more is fine.
    3) Include the image of your paintings (identified with artist and name) and the image of
your text message in your submission (one document is fine).
    4) You can be as creative as you want, but just make sure I can read what you wrote.
HERE’s A EXAMPLE: By the way, Caraviggio killed a tavern boy because he delivered an
artichoke to the table. At the time, artichokes were only for peasants and a sign of poverty.
Caraviggio was angered because he thought the boy was saying he was poor. So I have
Caravaggio talking to a friend with the painting being “What Happned” when the artichoke
was delivered. See where I’m going with this?
Please look at the uploads I have added for an example view.

  • Exploring the World of Community Theater: A Comparative Study of Local and International Theaters

The Tampa Bay area has many active community theaters.  For part 2 of the research project, research and write about one local community theater. It must be a small theater organization, preferably a non-profit organization.  Larger theaters like the Straz, Ruth Eckerd Hall, Patel, Ringling will not count for this part of the project.  If you have any questions whether or not you chose a community theater, please e-mail me.
    In 3-4 pages, discuss:
What is the history of your chosen theater? How did they get started?  How has their theater evolved over the course of its history?  What are the goals of the theater?  Who can be a part of the theater?
What kinds of plays does the theater produce? Is there a current play being produced and shown?  If so, what is the play about?
Research reviews about the theater and/or its productions. This can be a critical news review or something on social media or Yelp.  What do the reviews say about the theater or performance?  Does this make you want to see a production at the theater or be part of the theater’s community?  Why or why not?
If you can see a production, awesome! Write about your experience at the performance.
Then, choose one area in an area in the US other than Florida and one area in the world outside the US where community theater is performed.
What is the history of each of your chosen theaters? How did they get started?  How has their theater evolved of the course of its history?  What are the goals of the theater?  Who can be a part of the theater?
What kinds of plays does the theater produce? Is there a current play being produced and shown?  If so, what is the play about?
If you can find reviews, what do the reviews say about the theater or performance? Does this make you want to see a production at the theater or be part of the theater’s community?  Why or why not?
How do the theater communities outside of the Tampa area compare to what you learned about the focus on theater in the Tampa area?
