    ·       When did it occur?
    ·       In 1-2 sentences, state whether you think “War is
    Hell”.
World War 1 was a worldwide war that took place
mainly in Europe and the Middle East from 1914 to 1918. The assassination of
Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand on 28 June 1914 triggered a series of
events that led to the war in early August 1914. War is hell because of the
extensive suffering, destruction, and loss it causes to people and
    communities.

and over 19,000 were wounded. In total more than 130,000 men had died during
    the campaign.
    What do you
think that would have done to the people at home?
After 4 months the battles became stalemate

  • Title: The Fallacy of Individual Success: Challenging Social Darwinism, Horatio Alger, and Carnegie’s Gospel of Wealth in the Context of Racism and Discrimination in America.

Industrialization brought great wealth to America, but the price was quite high. The growing extremes of poverty and wealth that were being exhibited at the end of the 19th century, caused some to seek ways to make possible a just and humane society, while others sought justification for the emerging social order. The promise of success was made, promoting the idea that America was the land of opportunity and that hard work led to success. Social Darwinism was used to provide a scientific explanation for why some acquired great wealth while others barely survived. Rags-to-riches stories presented a picture of the opportunities that were available to all and the success of the self-made man.
In order to prepare for this discussion forum:
Review background information on the works of Horatio Alger Jr., and read one of his short stories: Ragged Dick, available on this linked site.
    http://nationalhumanitiescenter.org/pds/gilded/people/text3/alger.pdf
Read this selection from Andrew Carnegie’s The Gospel of Wealth on this link. ATTACHED Read this brief selection on Social Darwinism and Herbert Spencer, who applied Darwin’s theories of evolution to society. He also coined the phrase “survival of the fittest.” ATTACHED
After you have completed your readings post your response (300 – 600 words) to ONE of the topics in the following question:
How would you respond to someone who presents you with the arguments proposed by Social Darwinists, the stories written by Horatio Alger, OR Carnegie’s Gospel of Wealth (choose ONLY ONE of these), to explain the success or failures of individuals in society? What evidence would you use to support your position? For this discussion, you must first identify and present their arguments, and then your counterargument. As you collect your information for this discussion you should keep in mind the opportunities that were available to many, but also the climate of racism that permeated parts of the American society and the legalized discrimination that existed.

What role did gender play in shaping the French colonial empire? How have issues related to gender remained central to post-colonial France? Although students are not expected to discuss readings or themes from other earlier modules, in considering these questions, students might nevertheless think about how these questions about gender have intersected with insecurities about race and/or the meaning of Frenchness (or French identify) and to what extent this intersectionality has been a perennial issue in the history of French colonialism and imperialism.

  • Final Primary Source Comparison: Exploring Nature and Human Nature in Three Historical Sources

    Final Primary Source Comparison Rubric
For your final assignment, you will complete a 3-5 page comparison of the primary sources you have been reading over the course. You will address either nature or human nature as it appears in one primary sources from each unit. Then you will compare and contrast your theme in each of the 3 primary sources you have chosen.
Your grade will be out of 50 points and will be based on how well you use your primary sources to explore your theme. You can view the grading rubric I will use below. Your paper should be in 12 point, Times New Roman font and your name should be on the first page. Your header does not count towards the page count.
You may not use outside sources for this assignment and should use parenthetical citations for the primary sources, textbook or lecture material. You should identify your sources at the end of the paragraph. For example, a textbook citation for page 523 from the textbook would look like (Traditions & Encounters, 523)”, the Diego Rivera Mural would be “(Diego Rivera Mural)”, the lecture from June 3rd would be “(Lecture, June 3)”, the Nelson Mandela speech would be “(Nelson Mandela)” and so forth.
Please note: the standard “5 paragraph essay” thesis in which you simply state that you “will discuss” these primary sources will result in a poor score. Instead, you should make a statement about how different cultures (or different times) viewed or experienced your theme. Also, as this is the final assignment for a history class, you should focus on history and refrain from discussing current events.
If you are struggling to think about a theme or how your theme looks in different in the sources, start by considering the way the sources discuss your theme (are they excited about your theme? has something bad just happened in relation to your theme? Are these sources really reflecting an emotion like fear, excitement, sadness or joy? Do your sources discuss the theme in the same way or do they disagree with each other?). The second and final questions on the primary source worksheets that you have been completing for class should help you complete this assignment so returning to those assignments (and your feedback) would be a good place to start.
Please feel free to attend office hours (or make an appointment if you would like to talk outside of office hours) to discuss your paper if you are struggling or have questions on the assignment.
