  • Title: The Role of Religion in Shaping Early American Society: An Analysis of Primary Sources

For this assignment we need to write a 700-800 word essay in which you analyze the primary sources mentioned in the instructions document below. Your essay should cite and engage at least three primary passages (from the assigned readings); these should be in support of your argument. No additional research is expected—in fact, it’s discouraged. Make sure you cite the sources for your information, and especially the primary sources, using footnotes.
The essay should have a solid thesis (an argument) that is supported with evidence. Feel free to use direct quotations from primary sources – but efficiently: quoting too much wastes valuable space, especially since you only have two pages for this exercise.
In the attached file section you’ll find all the primary sources that were assigned to us, and also the primary source we should analyse.

Title: Plessy v. Ferguson and the Legacy of Jim Crow: The struggles of equality.
    Introduction
This research project will investigate Plessy v. Ferguson and the Legacy of Jim Crow, a historical Supreme Court case that has had a profound impact on African American rights and equality struggles in America. This study will looks at how Plessy’s legal precedent informed segregation policies enacted under Jim Crow laws to understand the systematic obstructions faced by African Americans towards achieving full citizenship and civil rights. Furthermore, it aims at considering any protests or acts by colored people themselves or their groups against wrongs perpetrated through Plessy and Jim Crow, focusing on their role in the wider racial justice movement. Finally, this research will give an insight into black history which can be very relevant to social justice issues today as well as problems of equity
    Research Questions:
What were the circumstances surrounding the Plessy v. Ferguson case and what were the  legal consequences for African American rights in the United States?
How did the phrase “separate but equal” created by Plessy v. Ferguson help to institutionalize segregation and discrimination under Jim Crow laws?
What actions did African Americans take to combat segregation after the Plessy v. Ferguson verdict even though there were Jim Crow laws?
What were some of the political motivations behind this court’s decision that made them come into a conclusion like that and what were racial attitudes like at that time?
What are some long term legacies of plessy v ferguson as well as jim crow on african american civil rights movement/struggle for racial equality in america?

Smith’s monograph provides a detailed examination of Jim Crow laws in Virginia with a focus on statewide implementation thus presenting a representative ethnographic study on how segregation impacted upon black communities generally. The book is based on Smith’s archival research delineating tactics used by white supremacists to maintain racial hierarchy and control in the South under Jim Crow.

Derek Pinchbeck examines the intricate relationship between the Black Civil Rights Movements and the federal government of the United States. He looks at how this connection occurs in cycles, with civil rights progressions typically coinciding with changes in federal legislation. Pinchbeck also explores the dynamic linkages between grassroots activism, rulings in a court of law as well as legislative measures, by doing broad research based on historical data, legal cases and policy improvements. This thesis provides fresh ideas about complicated powers sustaining race equality struggle in America and a comprehensive evaluation of the Federal Government’s response towards addressing Civil Rights issues.

It analyzes how historical practices of segregation have changed to form part of modern concerns on residential separation and injustice. Due to her study on continuous American spatial segregation, she shed light upon Jim Crow laws’ long-lastingness and their effect on African Americans’ lives.

  • Title: “The Art of Living in Society: A Reflection on the United States from 1848-1877”

The historian Henry Adams, looking backward from the vantage point of the end of the 19th century claimed that:
It will seem a small thing, 300 hundred years hence, to have invented a government without kings or aristocracy. The future will merely inquire, “What improvements did we make to the art of living in society?”
How would you apply Adams’ criterion for a significant society to the period 1848 – 1877 in the United States?
What are your ideas about the meaning of American history during the generation of civil war and reconstruction?
You may wish to emphasize the Reconstruction period, or you may wish to consider the period as a single whole generation

The booklet should include the following components:
Define the custom, value, or belief.
Compare and contrast the custom, value, and/or belief across two (or three) societies/religions.
Show how the custom, value, and/or belief influenced your selected societies/religions.
Provide three to five appropriately cited and referenced primary sources (in this case, documents created by the selected societies/religions to illustrate the concepts). The reference list must be included at the end of your booklet or at the end of your video.

  • “Uncovering Untold Stories: The Impact of Women’s Experiences on American History”

Prepare a 4–5-minute presentation. To make your video, click on the platform from the Panopto tab on the left side of our Canvas site. You’ll see the “Create+” tab, with which you can create a video right there on the Panopto site or upload a video you made on your own. In your presentation, introduce your interviewee and her key life experiences. Discuss how her experiences relate to a broader theme in American women’s history. Explain the insights on the experiences of American women that you have gained through the interview project. Discuss why we should learn about her experience. Why is her experiences and/ or contribution important to understanding American history? Make sure you communicate your topic in a way that everyone understands. Make your presentation an engaging story with a clear introduction, conclusion, and thesis statement. You may choose whichever format you think is most appropriate, engaging, and effective for your presentation. It is my experience that most students prefer using a PowerPoint presentation. If you want to incorporate pictures, I find PowerPoint presentations work very well. But do not limit your creativity.

  • The Olympic Charter: A Reflection on the Modern Olympics and its Evolution through Time

The lectures for this week touched briefly on the Ancient Olympics to give some connections to the first Modern Olympics in 1896 before moving onto our first case study: The Berlin Olympics in 1936. Before we dig into our first case study in Module 3, I want you to get some practice seeing the Charter as a historical document by referencing the Fundamental Principles of Olympism (page 8) as detailed in the current (2023) Olympic Charter Links to an external site..
Reference the Charter to answer these questions:
How does the Olympic Charter reflect our moment in time? What in the current (2023) charter contrasts with Coubertin’s Olympic ideals as I described in the lecture?
For this Reflection, respond to the questions above using at least 1 specific example from the current charter and the Modern Olympics lecture. Also, what is at least one of the Fundamental Principles in the current Charter do you think might have been threatened in 1936? You should write at least 300 words for this Reflection and will upload a Word (.docx) or PDF to Turnitin for submission. That interface is better for grading. This Reflection will be shorter than many of the others, but it is good practice for citing specific evidence to support your interpretations. Below is the Chicago-style citation for the page with the Olympic Charter. You can click any Olympic Charter link there to get to the PDF. I′m sending you to this page instead of directly to the Charter PDF because I want you to see the IOC page and note you can access the Charter for most any year from this site.
International Olympic Committee (IOC). Olympic Charter, in force as of 15 October 2023. Accessed April 30, 2024. https://olympics.com/ioc/olympic-charter Links to an external site. please write this and cite everything using apa, have a lot of in text cites
