Discussion Board: The Massachusetts Health Care Reform Law
The Massachusetts Health Care Reform Law, also known as Chapter 58 of the Acts of 2006, was the first state-level comprehensive health care reform law in the United States, serving as a model for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) at the federal level. The law aimed to provide near-universal healthcare access in Massachusetts, significantly reducing the uninsured rate in the state.

Initial Post (Due 05/22)
1. Read the following article about The Massachusetts Health Care Reform Law
2. Reply directly to this post, you will not submit a document. In your initial post and using your own words (do not copy/paste any sentences from the original source) respond to the following questions:
a) How did Massachusetts nearly achieve universal healthcare insurance coverage? (your answer must be a minimum of 4-5 sentences)
b) The article states the following: “Under the individual mandate, people who don’t have health insurance face large penalties when they file their taxes, with very limited exceptions. Requiring that everyone have health insurance helped smooth out some demographic variations in the system.” Describe 1 advantage and 1 disadvantage of requiring everyone to have mandatory healthcare coverage. (your answer must be a minimum of 5-6 sentences)
c) The Affordable Care Act Mandate of 2010 had an individual mandate similar to Massachusetts, but it is not enforced anymore and there is no financial penalty for not having health insurance. Do you think the U.S. healthcare system should enforce this individual mandate for everyone in the U.S.? Explain your answer (your answer must be a minimum of 3-4 sentences)

The Impact of False Claims on the Healthcare System, Providers, and Patients
Module #3 (B) Discussion – False Claims Act – Outcomes for System, Providers and Patients
No unread replies. 1 1 reply.
Overview
The False Claims Act of 1863 became commonly relevant to health care with the rise of government funded health care programs. The two major government programs Medicare and Medicaid came into existence in 1965. The False Claims Act is the major tool in the government’s toolbox to go after fraudsters preying on these and other government programs. In layman’s terms, the False Claims Act gives the government the right to pursue criminal and civil charges for those that presented fictitious and inaccurate claims. For this discussion, you will continue your exploration of government websites in order to respond to the discussion prompt, which is based on the case scenario presented below.
Case Scenario
You work in a provider system. One of the providers in the system has been found guilty of submitting false claims for the last 5 years. The government has determined that the controls to prevent or detect fraud in the provider system are weak. As a result of weak controls, other claims need to be probe tested and reviewed via an audit. The claim set selected/ pulled by the government includes some claims submitted to Medicare, on your patients, for services you performed. You were told the Office of Inspector General is involved and you will be hearing more in the near future and as needed. Shocked and surprised by all this, you start asking for clarification within your organization and quickly learn your organization has no Compliance Officer or staff to consult. The provider system seems to have no resources to train you and though you did received 30 minutes of voluntary annual compliance training from a vendor, an audit situation was not discussed. You begin doing some self research on the False Claims regulations to try to better understand this situation.
Write a 2 part discussion post that includes:
Your thoughts about how you feel learning that the organization did not invest in having a Compliance Officer or staff. Speculate what other concerns you may have about your patients and/ or your career if the tone at the top of the organization is lacked when it comes to compliance. Speculate on how false claims will inflate the national cost of healthcare, harm patients and divert precious resources away from those that need care. -
Navigating Life’s Changes: Supporting Clients Through Grief, Loss, and Identity Issues
This week in Chapter 9, we read about the many stressors people can experience across the lifespan, including grief, loss, and identity issues. Here are some ideas for your post to get you started:
Life brings about a lot of change. The change may feel welcome to some, and it may feel traumatic to others. When reading this chapter, were there any vignettes that resonated for you? If so, why?
If parents have a child with a disability, much time could be spent helping the child cope, live, and function. How could you, as the counselor, best support a parent from feeling isolated?
Share your thoughts on the dual process model of grief work. How would you normalize this process with a client?
What about this week’s content did you find to be of most interest? -

“Transforming Nursing Practice: A Capstone Clinical Project on Implementing Evidence-Based Change in Patient Care” “Final Presentation and Poster: Showcasing My Research and Findings”
Overview The Capstone Clinical Project is the culminating academic endeavor of nursing students who earn a baccalaureate degree in nursing from Felician University. The clinical project provides students with the opportunity to explore a problem or issue that is related to one of the following nursing competencies: patient-centered care, teamwork/collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, or informatics. The capstone project is worth 40% of your final grade in Clinical Immersion. The project must demonstrate the student’s ability to synthesize and apply the knowledge and skills acquired in this academic program to real-world nursing issues and problems. This final project will affirm one’s ability to think critically and creatively, solve practical problems related to nursing practice or the facilitation of patient-centered care, make reasoned and ethical decisions, propose change, and demonstrate both oral and written communication effectively with peers, nursing staff and members of the health care team. Objectives At the completion of this capstone project, the student will: Collaborate with clinical partners to identify a practice problem or issue relevant to the nursing profession. Integrate Lewin’s Change Theory in human systems when identifying the practice problem or issue. Propose an innovative solution or change to a system-related patient care problem identified on the unit where the student is practicing. Analyze the outcomes of nursing interventions using research-based evidence and data. Formulate evidence-based conclusions and recommendations related to the problem identified. Disseminate recommendations to nursing staff, peers, and interdisciplinary health care team. Project Timeline Identify a practice/problem/policy on your assigned unit. Be specific as to how this affects the unit you are working on. Discuss with your professor and prepare a draft of your proposed change between Week 2-5. Find evidence to support this practice/policy change. You may use research articles, meta-analysis, and integrative reviews from peer-reviewed journals. Summarize the evidence from at least five to eight professional sources. Evaluate the evidence. Is the evidence strong enough to change practice/policy or support a current practice/policy? Does the evidence support the practice/policy? Make recommendations based on the evidence. How could you apply your recommendations to your unit? Submission of Change Project Proposal – which will then need to be approved by your instructor is due by Week 6. Submission of Literature Matrix by Week 6. Prepare a Live presentation (using PP, Prezi, or Google Slides) and poster presentation to disseminate your findings. After approval from the nurse manager and professor, disseminate your findings to your assigned unit. Posters may be constructed using the following website: http://www.makesigns.com Links to an external site.. Follow the link to scientific posters and utilize the templates provided. Posters should be 24×36 or larger. (You may use another website if you prefer). You will make a first draft of this poster, once approved by your instructor you will then send this to a printing service, which must be at least a 24×36 poster board. The first draft of the presentation and poster template proposed change project was submitted to the professor by Week 9. Final Capstone Presentation with Poster due by Week 13. Seminar presentations will be held in Week 14. The presentation and poster will be assessed on adherence to APA format, organization, and spelling. The following statement is required on all written assignments with respect to the Felician University Honor Code. It must be included on the cover page: “I pledge my honor that I have neither given nor received inappropriate aid on this assignment.” Tasks Make sure to review the rubric below prior to completing your Capstone Final Project. Upload and submit your Capstone Final Project to this assignment page. You will submit your Final Presentation and Poster on the next assignment page. Turn-It-In Assignment
