IHP 330 Final Project Guidelines and Rubric Overview Epidemiology is the science public health practitioners use to study the patterns, causes, and effects of health conditions in defined populations. Public health practitioners rely on epidemiology to understand the risks and protective factors associated with health conditions, and to identify health disparities and specific populations at risk for disease. Studies in epidemiology inform the development of public health policy and targeted interventions to prevent disease and reduce health disparities. For your final project, you will complete an epidemiological research study report based on the provided research study found in the Module Seven Reading and Resources page. Epidemiologists in the field often must develop recommendations to address specific health issues, and part of that process is analyzing what other communities and epidemiologists have already done to address the issues. In your epidemiological research study report, you will analyze a health issue, the population impacted, and the prevention strategies used. You will then develop a research question and determine an appropriate research design to further investigate the issue. The final project is divided into two milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules Three and Five. The final product will be submitted in Module Seven. For the conclusion to your research study report, you will develop a research question to further investigate the public health issue and population, and to determine an appropriate research design for investigating the research question. Specifically, you must address the critical elements listed below. Most of the critical elements align with a particular course outcome. Population: In this report section, you will summarize key elements of the research study and analyze the population impacted by the health issue. Summarize the people, places, and times represented in the research study to provide context for your report. Describe three social and behavioral determinants strongly associated with the public health issue in the research study. Be sure to cite specific examples from the research study to support your description. Describe three known disparities associated with the health of the specific population. Health Issue: In this section of your final project, you will analyze the health issue that is the focus of the research study. You will draw conclusions about the health issue by reviewing the research study and conducting outside research on the topic. Describe the risk factors associated with the public health issue. Support your description with evidence from the research study and your independent research. Describe the mode of transmission of the public health issue. Support your description with evidence from the research study and one example from your independent research. Determine the incidence and prevalence of the health issue using the data from Table 1 of the research study to perform the appropriate calculations. Tip: To calculate incidence, use the figures in Table 1, pp. 12–13, and assume that the global population during the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic was 7.821 billion or 7,821,000,000. Determine the mortality rate of the health issue using the data from the research study to perform the appropriate calculations. Use the figures in Table 2 on p. xiv, and assume the total number of confirmed cases from Table 1. Interpret the odds ratio to determine the strength of association between the potential sources of exposure and the disease using the odds ratio given in Table 2. Using your research and analysis, draw connections between the population and public health issue. Consider where you identified common elements, what you learned about the public health issue by studying the population, and what you learned about the population by studying the public health issue. In addition, consider the study’s suggestion of the most likely primary source of the outbreak. Levels of Prevention: In this section, you will describe the prevention strategies the epidemiologists used in the research study. You will identify a strategy for each level of prevention and then differentiate between the strategies. Describe a primary prevention strategy represented in the research study and explain how it addresses key factors impacting the health issue of the specific population. Provide one example of a primary prevention strategy from the case study or your independent research. Describe a secondary prevention strategy represented in the research study and explain how it addresses key factors impacting the health issue of the specific population. Provide one example of a secondary prevention strategy from the case study or your independent research. Describe a tertiary prevention strategy represented in the research study and explain how it addresses key factors impacting the health issue of the specific population. Provide one example of a tertiary prevention strategy from the case study or your independent research. Explain how the primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies differ in how they address the key factors impacting the health issue in the research study. Conclusion: Now that you have analyzed the research study, you will develop a research question to further investigate the specific health issue and population, select an appropriate research design, and explain the importance of the research to the field of public health. Using your analysis of the research study, develop a research question to further investigate the specific public health issue and impacted population. Determine whether an observational or experimental research design would be more appropriate to investigate your research question. Be sure to justify your determination. Explain the importance of further research for improving the quality of health from a global perspective. What is the potential benefit? Milestone Milestone One: Health Issue In Module Three, you will analyze the health issue in focus in the provided research study. You will draw conclusions about the health issue through your review of the research study and by conducting outside research. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone One Rubric. Milestone Two: Population In Module Five, you will summarize the key elements of the research study and analyze the population impacted by the health issue. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone Two Rubric. Final Submission: Epidemiological Research Study Analysis In Module Seven, you will submit your final project. It should be a complete, polished artifact containing all of the critical elements of the final product. It should reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout the course. This submission will be graded with the Final Project Rubric. What to Submit Your final project should be 4–6 pages, double spaced, with one-inch margins, 12-point Times New Roman font, and APA formatting and citations. Based on what you have learned, write a philosophy of nursing that is holistic and focused from a health perspective. Each Section must be a minimum of ½ page and a maximum of 1 full page. The paper should be a minimum of five and a maximum of six pages not including the title page and reference page. Turnover is costly in terms of the time spent to replace a staff member and the dollars spent to advertise, review applications, interview candidates, and train new hires. Effective administrators look into why good staff members leave their organization and what encourages them to stay.
In this LearnScape, Bright Road Healthcare System is experiencing financial problems, for example insurers with late payments, Medicare patients with high readmission rates within 30 days (lost Medicare reimbursement), high staff turnover increasing costs, and low admissions to its obstetrics service. The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) is very concerned as he knows this reflects poorly on him and may affect his continued employment. The student, a financial consultant, will work with Bright Road Healthcare System staff members to review and analyze how operations in the healthcare system negatively affect its finances.
In the continuing evolution of healthcare, in the U.S., the industry has adopted more of a corporate model of service delivery, whereby the focus is on how to maintain a competitive advantage in the marketplace. This requires offering the right products and services, talent acquisition and retention, maintaining a healthy payer mix, managing the revenue cycle, cost containment, quality management, and innovation. Since we’re in a service delivery business, it cannot be over emphasized the significant role that people play in our industry. More specifically, we rely heavily on the competencies of highly skilled professionals when it comes to the delivery of health care services to a broad base of clients. While some turnover in an organization is healthy and perhaps even necessary, if the voluntary turnover is too great it can have a significant impact on access, cost, and quality. In the LearnScape scenario, students will begin to appreciate the impact that personnel play in the operations of a healthcare organization and the impact that personnel issues can have on almost every aspect of the business. In addition, the students will gain an appreciation for the roles and functions of certain personnel and what they perceive to be satisfiers and dissatisfiers. Based on the information provided in the scenario and on an outside review of the relevant literature, the students will carefully consider options that will improve the financial position of the healthcare system by addressing the negative trends experienced by the organization. The students will prepare a formal recommendation on changes that can improve the operational and financial performance of Bright Road to the Chief Administrative Officer. When formulating the recommendation, it is important to take into consideration the current healthcare workforce trends and best practices in the area of talent retention. The recommendation needs to be well supported, logically presented, and thoroughly vetted.
Initial Posting
The initial posting should be prepared as a Microsoft™ Word document, and then attached to the unit discussion thread. There is no minimum or maximum in terms of the word count; however, the response should explicitly address all required components of this discussion assignment. The document should be prepared as a practical business deliverable (single-spaced) and reflect higher-level cognitive processing (analysis, synthesis, and evaluation). Support the initial posting with at least 3 references of credible or peer-reviewed sources. Select a past disaster of interest or relevance to you from the Case Study Inventory.
Prepare a case study report and include epidemiological data (on morbidity, mortality and cost [infrastructure damage]) and identify key aspects of the response that you think positively or negatively impacted morbidity, mortality, and cost. Your report should include the sections outlined below. Use the sub-headings shown. Keep in mind that the case study report is a chronicle of the event, so please stick to the facts. For an example of what these should look like please see examples attached.

Case Study Report sections:
a. Introduction: one or two sentences describing the context of the case, for example: The Tokyo subway sarin gas attack in 1995 led to 12 deaths, more than 1000 injuries, and 5000 emergency medical evaluations. It led to a reexamination of the response to chemical disaster events and ultimately resulted in a number of new planning and response initiatives.
b. Facts of the Case: Person, place, time and cost if available (e.g., number of fatalities, exposures, how much damage to buildings and infrastructure and cost of damage, and cost of response etc.). Succinctly describe the event in complete sentences.
c. Epidemiological aspects of the event: Describe the study methods that were used for the event and the major measures of association (e.g., RR, OR, AOR) (i.e., for observational studies) and analytic approaches the authors used to analyze the data (e.g., regression models, Cox proportionate models, etc.). Describe any potential sources of biases, threats to validity or sources of confounding. State how authors dealt with missing data, if it was discussed in the paper.
d. Management of the event: briefly describe the public health response (remembering that medical care from this perspective is subsumed under public health) to the event and how effectively you thought it was managed, discuss what gaps in preparedness were identified, summarize lessons learned for improvements you would recommend or that were actually implemented in the aftermath of the event.
e. Communications of the event: If applicable, discuss the public communications surrounding the event (during, and immediately after) and your thoughts about how well that was managed.
f. Summarize: in a few closing sentences conclude your final “take away” message regarding this event.
