  • Title: Social Welfare Programs and US Foreign Policy

Number and answer all of the following:
    1.  Describe the differences between contributory programs (entitlement) and noncontributory programs (means-tested).  Discuss each of the programs under each category and who benefits most from each of those programs.
    2.  Describe some of the tools that the US has used to conduct foreign policy, giving an example of each.  What is the role of diplomacy?  What has been the influence of the United Nations (UN) since it was created?  What did the US do to create a new international monetary structure after WWII?  What do you believe to be the biggest threat to the US today?  Explain.

  • Title: The Structure and Functions of the Three Branches of Government

    1.  What is the organizational structure of Congress?  What are the leadership positions in both houses, and what are there functions?  First describe the positions, then google and find out  who currently holds these positions.  Choose either the US Representative for the district in which you live or go to college and do some research.  Discuss his/her background, education, characteristics of the district, committee he/she serves on, and the bills he/she has sponsored.  Your text is a little out of date, so I would google to get all of the current leaders.
    2.  (a) Watch the following video and then explain in your own words how the power of the veto works and what the pocket veto means.

Then do a search and find out which president had the most vetoes and what kind they were?  Who had the least?  Who had the most overridden by Congress?  President Trump had one veto overridden by Congress – what was that bill about?
    (b) Now watch these two videos about Presidential Executive Orders.

After watching, write a one page, double spaced paper on if you believe the president should have this power or not – relate your reasoning back to the information that you learned from the videos, and you can certainly use other sources.
    3.  The federal bureaucracy is organized into different types of agencies.  First, identify and describe cabinets, executive departments, independent regulatory commissions, and government corporations making sure to include an example of each.  Choose one specific cabinet department to research – discuss the purpose of that particular cabinet, its sub-agencies, the budget, the leadership and who holds the leadership position.
    4.  Explain the basic structure and jurisdiction of the federal judicial system.  Describe the three different levels of federal courts.  How are the lower courts created and how is their jurisdiction defined?  Go to https://www.oyez.org/cases/2022 Links to an external site.and pick a recent case that has been decided by the Court.  Summarize the basic facts of the case, the decision of the court (the vote) and the opinions that were written.
