LM2 Critical Essay Assignment: Who Am I? Understanding Identity Formation
Assignment Guidelines: For this assignment you will critically analyze the materials from LM2 while at the same time critically analyzing your own identity formation.
In order to understand yourself, your communities, your viewpoints, your achievements, your place in this world at this moment of your life you need to explore the following: 
Where do I come from?
Who do I come from? Where did they come from? (parents, grandparent, great-grandparents, etc.)
What communities (work, religious, school, military…) do I belong to?
What specific events in my life define me thus far?
The essay should be organized as follows:
Open the essay with an introductory paragraph. In this paragraph, provide a good working definition of the term “identity” and cite the source of your definition (you will lose points if you omit this). Provide a brief explanation of who you are and how you identify, the culture(s) and communities you have been raised in and how, if at all, culture has defined who you are up to this point in your life. 
Then, using the four questions above expand the narrative of your identity formation using examples from the sources (readings, films, and podcasts) located in the learning module that support or speak to your identity formation. You need to cite four (4) sources and only one source can be a film or podcast, the other three must be readings.
For example: “In the article “Becoming Hispanic: Mexican American and Whiteness,” Neil Foley discusses how Mexican Americans in Texas used the term “Spanish- American” because they were determined to assimilate into white American culture and they believed their Mexican heritage would prevent their assimilation. My parents never taught me to speak Spanish because…”
Edit very carefully for grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors because I will count off!
You should have a conclusion as well, this paragraph should recap the entire essay and discuss what, if anything, you learned about yourself and Mexican American culture and why it’s important to form one’s identity. 
Format: 3-4 pages, 12pt font Times New Roman, double-spaced, 1″ margins all around.
Your Critical Essay Assignment is due on Thursday, June 27, 2024 by 11:59pm. You will upload your essay to the assignment link provided in Learning Module 2.
The purpose of this assignment is to:
Develop an understanding of how identity formation is developed.   
Develop a better understanding of how history and culture contribute to our identity formation.
To better understand how race, class, gender, sexuality, religion, politics, place, etc. inform one’s identity formation. 
Understand how various identities and practices are categorized and defined by you and by others.
Make sense of the positives and negative stereotypes that accompany identity formation.

Also note a complete works cited/references is required.  Do not forget to include our class book and the article from the book in the works cited at the very end of the assignment. If you’re using an online citations generator the format should be for an article within a book  (APA Format).  This is a large part of the grading, be sure to include the book and the article from the book with correct formatting in the works cited.  Thank you for your attention to this. PART 2
1. Task:  Create a popular culture collection of images.  Using one power point slide, arrange images of your favorite popular culture icons/representations. Remember popular culture refers to what is popular among the masses . There should be a minimum of 10 images and there can be more. 
2. Provide a few sentences to describe each one—-  numbered 1-10  (PLACE THE DESCRIPTIONS WITH THE ASSIGNMENT & NOT ON THE SLIDE)  ONLY IMAGES GO ON THE SLIDE
Be sure to arrange them in an attractive layout on the slide, like a collage. Submit the one slide only (power point) as an attachment. Only this powerpoint should be submitted as an attachment. Follow the announcement for how to submit the assignment using the assignment link.
PART 3
3. Choose one example of popular culture that you enjoy watching, using, wearing, playing, or listening to; for example, describe your favorite video game or movie or TV show, commercial, or social networking site, Disney, etc….  Be sure to answer A and B with specific examples for both.  DO NOT combine A & B — keep them separate.
A. Describe your example. Explain what your example of popular culture reveals about American society? (minimum 140 words, be sure to use at least one citation from chptr.1 reading with page # & relate it to your example). (Include word count at the end of response)
B. What social values and attitudes can you identify about your example? (minimum 120 words). (Include word count at the end of response).
Remember to include a complete works cited at the end of the assignment for all of the sources used such as textbook & article, websites, articles, videos, etc. A complete works cited is an important part of the grading for all assignments.

Assignment #1: Self-Reflection (10% of final grade)
In the first Module of the term, I will encourage you to consider our own relationship with Women’s Studies. You will write a critical analysis of your interactions with gender throughout your life and how you think they are connected to what we will learn in class. You can use the available Guiding Questions as a starting point for your essay – you are not expected to answer all of the questions, this is simply a resource for you to start reflecting on gender. In this assignment, we will use our lived experiences to theorize gender. 
Guiding Questions:
What are some of your own experiences with gender and identity? How do you understand gender? Have you ever systematically considered how you developed your gender identity? Do you think your own identity influenced how you understand gender? 
What are some of the meanings you and the people around you have assigned to your gender? What kind of external messages or gender cues have you received throughout your life? 
What messages do you send to others regarding what it means to be a man or a woman?
Have you ever considered how gender intersects with religion, class, age, and race?  
Growing up, what kind of “roles” were you expected to perform because of your gender? Did you know that gender had something to do with that? Did you ever notice a difference between what was expected of you and other people around you from a different gender? 
When did you start understanding inequality? What about oppression? Why do you think that is the case? 
Did you have a big “eureka” moment that shifted the way you think about gender and identity? When was that? Why at that moment? 
Did you have people around you that pushed you to think differently about gender and identity? Do you think they did that intentionally? How influential were they in your uprising? 
Have binary gender or sex-based terms (man/woman, male/female) limited your identity and/or discussions with others? How? 
How has your schooling played into your understanding of what it means to be a man, woman, transgender person, or otherwise non-binary individual?
Have you ever been ridiculed or denied an opportunity for doing or saying something that others didn’t consider “masculine” or “feminine” enough? How did that make you feel? How did you react? How did it affect your life beyond that single incident?

You will submit two reading responses across the semester. The expected word count of these responses is 750-1000 words. In this assignment you are encouraged to primarily focus on 1 reading. The reflection should be at least one (long) paragraph, but you can write as much as you want. The reflection should not be just a summary. I have read the readings, I don’t need a summary. The reflections should be your interpretation of and reflection on the reading. You can include your reaction to the reading, a discussion of how it relates to your life, questions, or critique.
