Film: Titanic
For this paper you will take an outside film approved by your instructor and analyze it according to ONE lens (race, class, gender OR sexual orientation), using a minimum of three anthology articles to support your claims.
This paper is critically important to fulfilling many of your student credits (“Y” credit, Gordon Rule credit, 3000/4000-level course credit) required for graduation.
Failure to submit your paper has severe consequences. This paper is the basis for earning the “Y” credit and Gordon Rule credit. Without this assignment, you cannot earn these credits, regardless of any other work completed for the class. To receive credit, the paper must earn at least a C-.
Your paper will be primarily graded on three criteria: 1) the clarity and conciseness of your writing; 2) proper use of the sources in your paper; and, 3) the ability to identify an issue of race, class, gender and/or sexuality presented in the film and synthesize the arguments as appropriate to the topic of your paper.
More information may be found on the following pages. Please read them carefully. The Grading Rubric explains the criteria for grading your paper and provides a check list. The Assignment explains the purpose and mechanics of the paper assignment.
In addition, please adhere to the following formatting:
Papers must be at least 1,500 words
The word limit does not include Works Cited page, footnotes, endnotes or header
Provide citations for anything you cite (Chicago or MLA style)
Do not use any sources that are not in your Anthology or the Belton textbook
No internet sources are allowed
Papers will be typed, double-spaced, in a 12-point font, and have 1 inch margins
Write only in present tense.
Double space your paper.
Use character names when discussing character actions and actor names to discuss actor actions (Johnny Depp acts well, Captain Jack Sparrow seems crazy to all who view him.)
Always cite author ideas as well as quotations.
ALWAYS include a works cited page.
Italicize all film titles.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
You might want to think of your thesis in terms of the articles and then apply it to scenes from the film. For example, start with how hegemony uses class to maintain its status. Wealthy men are “gentleman,” and working class men are there to either serve the wealthy or stay out of their privileged spaces. This is enforced by both ISAs and RSAs. Identify them on the ship. I also think you need at least one point that looks at the intersection of class and gender. How are the choices different for Rose, Jack, and Cal? That will help you consider aspects of social capital and social gravity (McNamee & Miller) as well as the extent to which Rose must trade power for patronage, regardless of which man she chooses (Risman).

Analyzing and Critiquing “The Gold Rush”: A Cinematographic Examination
Analyze and critique The Gold Rush. Craft a paper in which you create an analysis of the film’s story and how it is presented cinematographically. The point here is to offer your own analytical insights after critically viewing a film. This should be a 3 page paper, not including the Works Cited page.
Refer to the readings and sample essays in Gocsik and Monahan to help you with this first writing assignment.
Refer to the Glossary to help you with your analysis. (The Glossary can be found under Course Menu in the navigation bar.)
Remember that your analysis needs a thesis sentence to focus your insights around a central idea. For examples of analytical thesis sentences, review Thesis Characteristics in the Empire State University Online Writing Center. You may also wish to use the Creating Your Thesis resource.
Do not write a literary analysis, nor merely retell the story.
Remember your research from the first module regarding good vs. bad research!
Always use proper academic formatting and a scholarly approach to your assignments.
Check spelling, grammar and mechanics.
Write film titles properly in your paper; use italics or, in this course, you may also underline the name of a film.
All papers should be 12 pt. type, double spaced.
All of your Written Assignments must include at least two scholarly sources AND must include direct reference to your learning from the Belton and/or Corrigan texts assigned for each module.
All of your research research (scholarly or non-scholarly sources) and any ideas you got from from course texts MUST be cited in all of your written work using MLA, APA, or Chicago Style. Written work without proper referencing will be returned. Work in which you present the ideas of other people as your own ideas without quotation marks and in-text citations will receive a failing grade.
If you have questions about this, please do not hesitate to reach out and schedule a time to meet with me.
Remember you can use the Ongoing Film Discussion area to help you expand your thinking and share your ideas.

“Exploring the Theme of Interracial Relationships in Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner: A Collaborative Analysis”
Your paper is a short collaborative paper with your partner. It will focus on the film Guess Who’s coming to Dinner. It will incorporate at least one secondary source.
The paper should focus on communicating one idea that the film expresses. This short three-paragraph essay should include an introduction, complete with a proper academic thesis; a body, which fully explores your subject using at least one secondary source; a conclusion that gracefully exits the reader out of the text. (Please do not use in summary or in conclusion. Please think about what you have argued and discuss the relevance of this discussion.)
The first page of your paper should include a proper heading: your class, your names, and the date on the left hand side of the page at the top. You will then skip a few lines and begin with your title. You will begin your discussion on that same page. Your paragraphs should be full paragraphs of approximately 150-200 words.
Grading criteria:
Have you followed directions?
Do you have an appropriate introduction that appropriately introduces the subject?
Do you have a thesis that makes a claim and justifies that claim?
Is the body of your paper relevant to your thesis and do your sentences flow smoothly?
Have you used your secondary source appropriately? Have you let your reader know how you are using this source?
Have you documented appropriately?
Does your conclusion move the discussion forward and out? -
“Media Diaries: Exploring Latinx Representation in Media” Week 1 (January 25-31): Title: “One Day at a Time” Production Information: Created by Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce, directed by Pamela
Instructions for Media Diaries
Beginning the first week of class, you are to keep a weekly diary of media that you
watched or listened to that week (clarification: one individual program, news
article, or film per week). Each entry (300-500 words) should include the title, any
production information including director, writer, leading actors (or anchors,
reporters), producer or show runner, producing organization (newspaper, studio or
broadcast network or cable channel), as well as your observations regarding genre,
thematic content, style, and the targeted audience (whom the media is designed to
appeal to the most.) Please date your entry to reflect the time of viewing. There will
be a preliminary submission and review of these diaries in week 6, and the final
diaries are to be submitted together with the final reports by June 13 th 10 a.m.
How to select programs or films for viewing: please select a film, television
program, radio show, podcast or print medium that we have not covered in class. A
list of possible sources is provided in “Helpful Links” on Canvas. Your
selections should feature one or more of the following: 1) Latinx-related themes; 2)
Latinx-created (written, designed, or directed) media; and/or 3) Latinx performers.
The more Latinx related the show or article, the better, but it is also of interest to
comment on the representation of Latinxs in the general media, regardless of the
identity of the creator or producer. Please refrain from surfing Youtube, unless the
film or program is rare and cannot be accessed by any other means. You may also
choose to comment on artisanal or self-produced “home videos” shared on the web. -
“Representing Contested Territories: A Comparative Analysis of Aesthetics and Production Practices in The Lives of Others and Omar”

In your analysis, I encourage you to compare and contrast different stylistic choices and/or production practices that are used by these filmmakers to represent the sociopolitical issues that you have chosen to focus on as well as how these sociopolitical issues are relevant to each respective country/region/era, etc. In doing so, you may analyze how each director represents the same/similar contested territories (including any relevant sociopolitical issues) using different aesthetics and/or production practices. Alternatively, you may compare how the same/similar aesthetics and/or production practices are used to represent different contested territories (including any relevant sociopolitical issues) in these films.
