    Example Entries
    Scholarly Article Example
Citation: Gándara, P., & Contreras, F. (2010). The Latino education crisis: The consequences of failed social policies. Harvard University Press.
Annotation: This book explores the educational challenges faced by Latino immigrant students in the United States, examining the impact of social policies on their academic achievement. Gándara and Contreras, both experts in education and Latino studies, present a comprehensive analysis of the systemic barriers that contribute to the educational crisis among Latino students. The book is aimed at educators, policymakers, and researchers and provides actionable recommendations for improving educational outcomes. Its relevance lies in its thorough examination of policy failures and their direct impact on immigrant families, making it a critical resource for understanding the broader context of educational challenges.
    Journal Article Example
Citation: Rong, X. L., & Brown, F. (2001). The effects of immigrant generation and ethnicity on educational attainment among young African and Caribbean Blacks in the United States. Harvard Educational Review, 71(3), 536-565. https://doi.org/10.17763/haer.71.3.v1r3742844r6t1u8
Annotation: This study investigates the educational attainment of young African and Caribbean Black immigrants in the United States, considering the influence of immigrant generation and ethnicity. The authors employ quantitative methods to analyze data from national educational databases. The study is relevant to researchers and educators focusing on the intersection of immigration, race, and education. It provides insights into how generational status and ethnic background affect academic performance, highlighting the unique challenges faced by these groups. The strength of the study lies in its robust statistical analysis, although it notes the limitation of not addressing individual school and community factors in depth.

(See details below).  Your report should be written in APA style with citations from the course text, readings
    Case #1:   Annie
Annie is a 15-year-old cheerleader who is tall, thin, and attractive.  No one who sold liquor to her questioned her age.  She got her money from babysitting and what her mother gave her to buy lunch.  Annie was kicked off the cheerleading squad for missing practice too many times, but that didn’t stop her drinking.  Soon she and several of her peers were drinking almost every day.  Sometimes they skipped school and went tothe woods to drink.  Annie’s whole life began to revolve around her drinking.  After a while, her parents began to detect Annie’s problem. Her father put down the line and grounded her for two months. He didn’t want to listen to her arguments.  But her parents’ attempts to get her to stop drinking by punishing her were unsuccessful.  It went on for two years, and, during the last summer, anytime she saw anybody, she was drunk.
Annie had a very strict upbringing.  Her father was a military officer and her mother was a stay-at-home mom.  The family is very religious. Annie’s parents wanted her to become a doctor, and up until her freshman year in high school, Annie did what her parents told her to, and was an A student taking pre-med honors classes. Annie met her boyfriend, Frank, at the end of her freshman year.   Frank is three years her senior and a high school dropout. Annie’s maternal grandmother died last spring, and Annie was very close to her.

  • Exploring the Impact of Social Media on Mental Health: A Quantitative Analysis

Paper should include both data and secondary sources. The data may be written, spoken, observed, or quantified information. The type and volume of data you use depends the nature of your question. Check the handout from last quarter for potential data sources. For the secondary sources, your paper should include a minimum of 8-10 high-quality scholarly sources.
    Format:
1 Frame: The frame is where you introduce the basic parts of your paper. The introduction introduces the whole project—the location, the stakes, the research question, and the argument. The introduction tells the reader what you will do in the paper and what they need to know to understand the paper. Your frame may also include a separate setting section, where you describe where your project is set, giving the essential background on time, place, and history. Finally, your frame will also include your literature review where you situate your argument within the broader literature and discuss what you will do differently in your paper. It would be possible to combine two of these sections (e.g., setting and literature review), but doing all three in one would be a real challenge.
    2 Evidence and Methods
The evidence and methods section is where you describe what you have and how you will use it in your paper. Your section should make a case for your evidence and methods—tell the reader why your data are important, and why your method is the best way to work with these data. If you have a comparative project, you will also want to make the case for your comparison here as well. It’s possible to include the evidence and methods section in your introduction if you have a more historical paper, but you should check with me ahead of time.
    3 Analysis
The analysis section is the heart of your paper. This is the section where you will work with all the material you collected. That analysis will vary depending the nature of your project and evidence. Some of you will have lots of tables and graphs. Others will have text alone. No matter what you do, make sure it is substantive and properly sourced, and that your figures and tables are clearly labeled.
    4 Conclusion
The conclusion is where you discuss the implications of your research. This is your last chance to tell the reader what they learned. Leave them with a take-away point! For quantitatively oriented papers, you can also discuss the limits of your research and make suggestions for future projects. You can also use a separate discussion section before the conclusion for research design and data, though you would only want to do so if you had a major follow-up project in mind. Either way, the conclusion should be quick and to the point.
    References
I would recommend that you use parenthetical citations and a Chicago-style bibliography. However, you may choose your style; just be sure to be consistent throughout the paper and the bibliography

who face the challenges of neglect and abuse while struggling to survive in a harsh New York City
environment. Through a systematic analysis of the film and responses to key questions, this research
aims to shed light on the complexities of child abuse and neglect as portrayed in contemporary cinema.
In efforts to delve deeper into the concepts of child abuse, please respond to at least 3 of the following
    prompts:
    • How does the movie portray the emotional and psychological effects of child abuse and neglect
on Mister and Pete? What coping mechanisms do they develop, and how do these mechanisms
    evolve throughout the film?
