    INSTRUCTIONS :
Be sure to address every item below:
    • Review the ACA (clinical mental health track) or ASCA (school counseling track) Code
of Ethics on all diversity-related standards. (Though you will read all diversity-related
standards in preparation, your paper should discuss only the standards most salient
    to the case.)
o How do you think they apply to this case? Give general and brief statements
    here.
o In essence, what does the code say about how counselors should approach
diversity and what they should do when their values clash with their client’s?
    • Related to individuals like the counseling client in this case, discuss the historical,
social, and political inequities that might come into play.
    • Do you believe EMU had a right to expect that a counselor in training at a public
university should broaden her experience to serve those whose worldview
fundamentally differed from her own? Why or why not?
    • What do you personally think about this case? Did either side go too far? Give your
opinion here and feel free to share your personal ideas and values on the topic.
o How would you address differences of values in the counseling relationship?
o How does this approach apply to your professional identity as a counselor?
    • Keeping in mind the emphasis on justice and equity throughout the ACA Code of
Ethics, how do you plan to work (at the individual, institutional, and/or societal
levels) to remove inequities for people in non-dominant groups?
Note: Of course, you will have your gut reaction to the case, but your opinion needs to be
informed by the ACA and/or ASCA Codes of Ethics. The paper needs to present a well –
defended opinion to a divisive topic.
Format your paper using APA Style, including title and references pages. The paper should
be 5- to 7-pages (not including title and reference pages), and exhibit a thorough13
development of each question, showing reference to the relevant ethic

  • Title: Close Reading and Philosophical Argument: Analyzing Rawls’ Theory of Justice

    ARGUMENT PROMPT
First, I want you to gain an appreciation of what it takes to do a close, careful reading of a somewhat technical philosophical text. Most of the work that you do to write this paper, you should be doing when you read each text for this class.
Secondly, I want you to start the process of learning to write in the style of a philosophical argument. As such, your task is to explain the author’s reasoning, NOT to summarize the text (so, e.g., you should avoid phrases like, “next, Rawls says…”). Since you will not be providing a novel thesis of your own, the thesis of your paper should be something like “X argues that Y.” You want to be as clear about your thesis as possible; I recommend having your thesis as the last sentence of your introduction, and begin with something like, ‘I will argue that…’ (It is OK to use the first person!) The body of your paper ought to justify this thesis by showing how the author defends it, using their reasoning.
This is an academic paper. You should avoid excessively casual language, irrelevant facts (including biographical information about the author), and MUST cite appropriately. You are free to use any standard citation style you’re comfortable with (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.), but you have to consistently use a real citation style. This means that you should cite every claim that is not your own, and include a ‘works cited’ page at the end (if there is room, please save paper by putting it at the bottom of the last page). If you do not know how to cite properly, or build a proper works cited, please ask me or use one of the many resources on campus designed to help students with their writing. Note: Electronic ‘works cited’ creators DO NOT WORK. Build your own works cited page!
Since the goal is to get you reading the text closely and carefully, you should NOT be using any secondary sources (e.g. articles about the author, or Google, or Cliff’s Notes, or Wikipedia, or ChatGPT, or Grammarly) for this assignment, even to help you understand the text better. You certainly should not be taking ideas directly from these sources. If you do it with a proper citation, you will be docked points for failing to complete the assignment as directed; if you do not include a proper citation, I am VERY likely to find out, in which case you will automatically fail and the case will be turned over to the Office of the Provost as a violation of the university’s academic integrity policy.
Papers should be submitted on Blackboard (upload a .pdf or .docx document; don’t just copy and paste the text of your paper), and you should turn in a hard copy on the day the paper is due.
Refer to my philosophy paper writing guide on Blackboard for more general information about how to write a philosophy paper and to the grading rubric (also on Blackboard) for information about how I grade various elements of your paper. The elements from the rubric will be weighted thusly:
Please use the attached below to complete this assignment and cite it whenever you refer to this reading.

  • EEOC Press Release Analysis: Recent Litigation Case Involving Minoritized Groups

    Introduction and Alignment
The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) investigates charges of discrimination in the workplace and enforces federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against individuals based on their “race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, transgender status, and sexual orientation), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information” (“EEOC Overview”, n.d.). • “Comedy as a Tool for Social Commentary”

Image Above: Stand up Comedy is a forum of expression, entertainment, but it’s also a forum of discussion of the toughest topics in our world.
Welcome to your last assignment! We have discussed a historical trajectory of injustice and violence perpetrated against people of color: Native Americans, African/ African Americans, Chicana/o/x members, and Asian/Asian Americans.  I wanted to offer you an opportunity to think about how stand-up comedy allows us, especially in the US, to regard the topics that we’ve engaged throughout the semester.  Therefore, I have chosen to divide this last assignment into TWO parts.
Part One: “Life is a Comedy” (10 points)
For the first part of this assignment, I’m asking you to please check out stand-up comedy on YouTube.  I want you to provide me with FOUR segments (not an entire show) from comedians that represent the different groups discussed in class (Native Americans, African/ African Americans, Chicana/o/x members, and Asian/Asian Americans)  that discuss any of the following topics: race, ethnicity, gender/sexuality, class, nationalism, immigration.  I will give you an opportunity to do the research and what you will submit are 4 stand-up comedy bits (title of the video and the link).
Part Two: Let’s Dissect that Stand-up Bit! (40 points)
Here we go! So for each bit that you have provided me, I want you to discuss how each bit is supported and/or reflected by what we’ve discussed in class.  In other words, I want you to connect at least FOUR sources per comedy bit.
ONE of the sources MUST be from your lecture notes (leaving you to choose 3 other sources).  Keep in mind that if you point to my PowerPoint, it’s part of the lecture notes, though by no means a “complete” sentence to what has been discussed in class. Please cite your notes as follows:
    (Hortua Lecture, Date of lecture)
Your other THREE sources MUST come from what has been provided in class ONLY: primary sources, videos, textbook/s, etc.
Rewind/Review: You will analyze ONE comedy bit for each group (Native Americans, African/ African Americans, Chicana/o/x members, and Asian/Asian Americans), and then use FOUR course sources provided from our class (One source MUST be your class notes) and then you will break down how each comedy bit is supported and/or reflected in our course materials and discussions.
How long does this have to be? For Part 2, I’m looking that you provide a 1.5 pages for each group. (4 groups; 6 pages).
    Points: 50 (10 points/40 points)

Both the brief summary and reflection/reaction should exhibit careful reading, attention, and thoughtfulness; and essays will be graded according to the following rubric:
Writing must be virtually free of spelling and grammatical errors. Writing with more than three spelling or grammatical errors will be penalized 2 points.
