Research is a critical element of public health services delivery. It is often used to examine the relationships between cost, quality, and access with the goal of improving population health, clinical, and organizational practices and informing public health care policies. It is essential that you as a public health care professional develop an understanding of the purpose and value of health care research.
To prepare for this assignment, think about some of the important issues in public health and health care today. Consider the topics you have been exposed to through previous courses in your program of study and any news items that have caught your attention lately. How can and how should research be used to inform the public of these issues?
Next, review peer-reviewed journals and Internet articles from the CSU Online Library that provide credible information on a particular topic in public health.
Identify a public health topic of interest and articles that relate to this topic to begin your final research paper.
With your one selected topic, and with information from your resources in mind (peer-reviewed, scholarly articles, CSU Online Library sources), think about the purpose and value of this particular research. Answer the questions below.
What is your research topic (provide details and background about the topic)?
Why did you select this topic?
    What is your research question?
Identify ethical issues that could occur in your research study, consider how you will avoid them.
Discuss how ethical standards will protect any human subjects who participate in your research study and include information from the Belmont Report that supports your thoughts (remember, this is a hypothetical research study that you will not conduct).

  • Title: The Role of Emotions in Moral Reasoning: Finding a Balance between Logic and Feeling

If moral reasoning is largely about providing good reasons for moral claims, where do feelings enter the picture? Is it possible to present a logical argument that you feel strongly about? If so, provide an example of such an argument.

  • “Resolving Conflicts and Upholding Ethical Standards in the Workplace: A Manager’s Responsibility in Dealing with a Politically Charged Situation at a Local Restaurant”

    Business Ethics Position Paper
Your task is to write a paper from one to two pages (double spaced) that analyzes one of the following business ethical issues. You choose which issue to write about; in this assignment, reflect deeply on a topic that matters to you. Each scenario represents a conflict in an organizational setting. In addition to applying ethical reasoning to your position, you must demonstrate how as a leader you would preserve the professional relationships in question and resolve the conflict. You may draw upon personal experience, current events, and research to support your views.
    Option A:
At a local restaurant a prominent politician has arrived and has been seated for dinner. Several of the serving staff are upset because they disagree with the politician’s political views. Some are requesting the manager on duty speak to the politician and ask him/or her to leave. Explain what the manager should do in this situation and how they could resolve the conflict between the servers and the politician in the most ethical manner.
    Content Requirements:
You must apply at least one ethical theory to support your position.
You must also show how your decision would preserve the professional relationships in question and resolve the conflict in an ethical manner.
You must demonstrate consistency of your clearly established viewpoint throughout the paper and a clear logical flow as you apply ethical reasoning.
Your writing must be original and insightful.
    Grammatical/Format Requirements:
Paper must be one to two pages in length, double spaced, in correct APA format using Times New Roman or Arial font size 12.
Paper must include a title page and reference page if citations are used.
Paper must adhere to Standard English with correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

  • “Developing an Integrated Ethical Framework for Personal and Professional Decision Making” OPTION 2: GROUP PROJECT – ETHICAL CASE STUDY ANALYSIS In groups of 3-4, choose an ethical case study from the Regis Library database or

    Final Project
    Dear Students:
You have two options to choose from for the final project. It is due Sunday, June 23 by midnight.
I would prefer that you do option 2. Unless you are a stellar writer, students usually get better grades doing the group project (option 2). Further, the survey you take highlighting your participation in the group usually adds points.
    OPTION 1: ETHICAL FRAMEWORK PAPER
In a 10 page paper, double spaced, 1-inch margins, size12 font, construct your own integrated framework (method) for resolving ethical dilemmas in your personal and professional life. This is not a group project.
2 of the 10 pages must include a properly formatted Annotated Bibliography (go on YouTube for examples) that includes five scholarly sources using Regis Library databases. Use your school’s required format (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc).
You must use Ruggiero (chapters 7-10) and two other theories.
Each of the three theories must be rigorously described and explained
Then you must demonstrate that they can be integrated into one unified framework for making ethical decisions and judgments.
For example, you could use Ruggiero’s four steps (ch. 7) and Lonergan’s operations of consciousness. Then you could show how people in different orders of consciousness (Kegan) would understand and use the steps.
Another example would be to use Ruggiero’s three basic criteria and show how each is understood differently depending on what order of consciousness one is in. Then you could show how Lonergan’s theory would apply.

  • The Moral Dilemma of Edward: An Ethical Analysis

The Mid-term essay is a five-paragraph essay written in APA 7 format in about two to three pages, NOT including the title and references pages, at approximately (1000 words) long.
As usual, I’ll evaluate your papers mainly by the following criteria:
an understanding of the assigned material
    originality of your ideas,
    development of thoughts, and
    style of writing.
Edward is taking his daily walk near the train tracks when he notices that the train that is approaching is out of control. Edward sees what has happened: the train driver saw five workmen ahead on the tracks and slammed on the brakes, but the brakes failed, and the driver fainted. The train is now rushing toward the five men; the banks are so steep that they will not be able to get off the track in time. Fortunately, Edward is standing next to a switch, which he can throw, that will turn the train onto a sidetrack. Unfortunately, there is one person standing on the sidetrack with his back turned. Edward can throw the switch, killing the one, or he can refrain from doing this, letting the five die. Remember, Edward did not build the train, nor is he responsible for its current predicament. However, if he pulls the switch, he is both intervening and making a judgment regarding human value. Take this into account when writing your essay.  There is a reason this is considered a “moral dilemma.”
Incorporating what you have learned from ethics, answer the following questions.
    1. “Do you think Edward should throw the switch? Why?”
    2. Would a Utilitarian agree? Why?
    3. Would a Kantian agree? Why?
    4. What do you believe is the best option “What is The Good?” Why?

  • Professional Code of Ethics and Decision Criteria in Healthcare: An Analysis Using the Ethical Theory Matrix Strengths and Weaknesses of Ethical Theories Ethical Theory | Strengths | Weaknesses Utilitarianism | – Focuses on maximizing overall happiness and minimizing harm for the majority. | – Ignores individual rights and

Identify the professional code of ethics for your professional specialty or a specialty that you are interested in, describe the decision criteria, and analyze each theory using examples and the Ethical Theory Matrix Template.
Ethics is a branch of philosophy devoted to the study of morality. Ethics has a long history of theories about determining right from wrong and identifying the principles of living a good life. For this assessment, you will be asked to apply foundational principles in ethics, such as autonomy and justice, in a relevant health care setting.
Each profession within health care has its own code of ethical behavior designed to help individuals within that profession to make sound ethical choices in carrying out the tasks and practices particular to their professional role. It may be useful to locate one or more relevant codes of ethics for your current or desired career path. This research will be beneficial to your professional development, and you will have a chance to apply it to the Tonya’s Case: Ethics and Professional Codes assessment in this course.
    Autonomy, Truth-Telling, and Confidentiality
These are broad-ranging topics, which, if taken alone, seem almost comically simple. Of course, rational people of legal age should be able to make decisions concerning themselves and their minor children. Of course, medical professionals should be honest with patients, and, of course, patients should be honest with members of their health care teams. Of course, one’s medical issues should be kept private. But rarely are things as simple as they seem. Take some time to scratch beneath the surface, and we encounter myriad ethical dilemmas.
Honesty tends to be a revered trait in many cultures. However, many people admit to lying occasionally, especially if the intent is to spare someone pain, embarrassment, or anguish. Is lying to someone because of love, concern, or reputation ever ethical?
Privacy and confidentiality are also important concepts. But are there limits? Can the greater good ever outweigh the rights of individuals?
And at what point can others, whether an individual or an entity such as a government body, ethically determine someone’s actions, fate, or choices? Fluoridated water, smoking regulations, compulsory K–12 education, and speed limits are only a few examples of how we, as a society, agree to limited personal freedoms because these things are good for us.
    Demonstration of Proficiency
By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the course competencies through the following assessment scoring guide criteria:
Competency 1: Articulate ethical issues in health care.
Articulate the time-tested theories of ethics.
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of the time-tested theories of ethics.
Competency 4: Explain the conceptual framework that health care leaders use to make ethical decisions.
Identify the decision criteria of the time-tested theories of ethics.
    Preparation
As you begin work on your Ethical Theories Matrix assessment, it may be helpful to review the suggested resources focused on moral and ethical considerations. For your own reference, you may want to briefly jot down your thoughts related to:
An inventory of the basic principles of health care ethics. These principles are nonmaleficence, beneficence, utility, distributive justice, and autonomy.
An explanation of each principle as well as your own example to illustrate the application of each.
    Instructions
Drawing from the material covered in the resources as well as your own research, complete this assessment using the Ethical Theory Matrix Template [DOC] Download Ethical Theory Matrix Template [DOC].
For each theory, first describe the decision criteria. The decision criteria are the instructions the theory gives for how to reach the morally correct choice in a situation that requires action.
Then, provide your own example of how someone might act using the decision criteria of the theory.
Finally, briefly describe the strengths and weaknesses of each theory using the last two columns of the Ethical Theory Matrix Template.
The suggested resources for this assessment could help you get a start on completing the matrix, but do not hesitate to use any outside resources that you can find online, the Capella library, or elsewhere.
This matrix is a tool you will use throughout the rest of the course. Submit your completed matrix as an attachment to this assessment.
Refer to the Matrix of Ethical Theories Scoring Guide for more information on how this assessment will be graded.
