  • The Impact of Banned Literature on Society: Examining Huckleberry Finn, The Bluest Eye, 1984, and Tom Sawyer

*Insert Pieces of banned writing such as Huckleberry Finn, The Bluest Eye, 1984, Tom Sawyer, etc…
The paper is 1,750 to 2,500 words in length.
    Proper MLA formatting is used,
The introduction must have a clearly stated thesis statement (the first paragraph). Feel free to use a thesis generator if you are unsure: https://writingcenter.uagc.edu/thesis-generator$   $ or https://sunyempire.edu/learning-support/thesis-generator/  Make sure that you proofread and tweak the results as needed.
A “hook,” or attention-grabbing first sentence to introduce your paper.
Body paragraphs that prove (or counter) your thesis claim. If the paragraph is not germane to your thesis, please save it for another research paper.
Body paragraphs flow in an organized and cohesive manner. Transition words facilitate this aspect.
Subheadings are NOT required, but if used, they must be properly formatted.
There is at least one paragraph dedicated to a counterargument, and there is an answer for the counter.
At least four direct quotes from secondary sources are included, and they are properly cited in MLA style. Additionally, the quotes must have your interpretation, context, or comments as to their relevance to your thesis. (A good rule of thumb is one direct quote for every paragraph, except the intro and conclusion paragraphs.)
With very few exceptions, properly formatted in-text citations are in every paragraph—even when paraphrasing or summarizing. (They are not usually necessary in the opening or the closing paragraphs.)
    Slang is not used-
The pronoun “you” is not used-
    Contractions are not used-
There is noun/verb agreement, and the verb tenses are consistent throughout the paper.
The paper is carefully proofread for spelling, punctuation, grammar, as well as clear and precise syntax.
There is a conclusion that summarizes your evidence and restates your thesis in a different manner than the introduction.
Titles of books, journals, magazines, and newspapers are italicized. Articles, short stories, and titles of poems are in quotation marks.
There are at least three secondary sources on the Works Cited page, and they are alphabetically ordered.

  • Title: “The Divine Ambition of Hamlet: A Close Reading of Act IV, Scene iv”

    From Hamlet (IV. iv. 32-66):
Witness this army of such mass and charge
Led by a delicate and tender prince,
Whose spirit with divine ambition puff’d
Makes mouths at the invisible event,
Exposing what is mortal and unsure
To all that fortune, death and danger dare,
Even for an egg-shell. Rightly to be great
Is not to stir without great argument,
But greatly to find quarrel in a straw
    When honour’s at the stake.
Analyze your chosen passage, paying close
attention to the language and literary devices used in it. You should be answering the following questions:
What is the author doing here? How is the author doing it?
What is the significance of your observations (as relates to the theme of the passage or text as a whole, but also to our study of tragedy)?
You may discuss the passage in the context of the larger work, but please concentrate primarily on the passage itself.
You will need a clear and challenging thesis around which to build your essay (see handout on the Three Storey Thesis in Handouts under the Content tab). A good approach in this case is to take your answers to the questions above and use them to formulate a thesis. For example, your answer to “what is the author doing here?” would be the argument of your thesis (second storey); your answer to “how is the author doing it?” would be the topic of your thesis (first storey); and your answer to “what is the significance of your observations?” would be the
significance of your thesis (third storey).
The paper must also have an introduction, a body of supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion. Please underline the thesis as well as the topic sentences of each of the paragraphs in the body of the essay. You must reference all quotations and include a Works Cited (listing the text to which the passage belongs and any modules from which you draw information; you should use no other secondary sources). Please use MLA format in your in-text citations and bibliography.
Specifically, I will evaluate this assignment based on the following elements: 1) your ability to perform a close reading of a short segment of text (i.e., to construct a convincing argument about the passage based specifically on your analysis of the language and theme of the passage itself as they relate to tragedy); 2) your ability to isolate at least one important idea in the passage and intelligently discuss its thematic importance; 3) the ability to express yourself clearly and coherently in English.

  • Title: “A Tale of Two Essays: A Comparison of Narrative and Comparison/Contrast Writing”

ASSIGNMENT: Write a 3-4 page (approximately 700-1000 words) comparison/contrast essay in the informative mode. In addition, you must answer the “Think About Your Writing” questions, described below, beneath your essay.
    Answer these questions
Did you use the point-by-point or block method to organize your body paragraphs? What made you decide to organize your essay in this way? (3-4 sentences) Sophia says: Consider the ways a comparison/contrast essay can be organized. Which organization did you choose and why?
In what ways did writing a comparison/contrast essay differ from the narrative essay you wrote in Touchstone 1? Give specific examples. (3-4 sentences) Sophia says: Consider how the structure, point of view, and purpose of the two essays differ.
Remember that the writing process is a recursive process, and your first draft of an essay is rarely your last. What part of the draft did you struggle with? (3-4 sentences) Sophia says: Think about how you could improve the draft if you continued the writing process with revision and editing.

  • Title: Textual Research Proposal Presentation

    Textual Research Proposal
(Please review Research Paper Prompt materials for guidance on choosing your text. The Text Proposal is a related but separate assignment from the Final Research Paper.)

In your digital presentation submitted to Canvas, you will be expected to present the following:
A specific text and major question about said text regarding an analytical purpose.
Subtopics and sub-questions you will develop within your research paper (refer to prompt for further instruction on sub-topics/sub-questions).
Some academic information/facts/quotes (from your primary or secondary sources) you have researched so far that apply to your topic.
What you hope to achieve from doing research on your chosen text (besides a good grade).
You may present your topic in any fashion you are most comfortable with, including:
PowerPoint Presentation (with audio or video if possible, but not required)
    A short video/explainer
    Posterboard “video”
Any other medium you feel would be relevant to the assignment
You will be graded on the following:
Both the presentation AND a one-page summary of your presentation that breaks down the text and analytical discussion you are proposing. This can be in the form of a comprehensive outline or a one/two-paragraph breakdown of the presentation.

  • The Infantilization of Characters in “The Love of My Life”: A Critical Analysis

    Instructions: 1000-1250 words
    Double-spaced
MLA Document Formatting MLA Document Format
Sample Thesis: In the story “The Yellow Wallpaper,” the narrator turns into a crawling baby by the end, echoing the fact that she is placed in the nursery and treated like a child by her husband and sister-in-law.
Does this sound odd, weird even? Perhaps you disagree with it—we didn’t discuss this in class, and I’m not sure any of you would see the story in this light. But if I go through “The Yellow Wallpaper,” I can find lots of textual evidence to prove to you that the narrator is infantilized.  Although it is bizarrely worded, a thesis like this could work. I want to free you to find a thesis that speaks to your experience with the stories. I do not want canned thesis statements that sound “correct” or “proper.” You will need to re-read the story/stories to get down into their depths and really figure out for yourselves what you believe in.
Using your critical reading skills, evolve a persuasive thesis based on one to three of the following aspects of your reading:
Characters—the way a character is presented and developed to cause the reader to think and feel a certain way
    Plot and Structure
    Setting
    Theme
Point of view—the perspective from which the story is told, i.e. in the first-person (“The Yellow Wallpaper”) or the third-person (Paul’s Case) How much does the narrator know about the inner workings of the characters’ minds? In other words, how omniscientis the narrator?
Imagery/Symbolism—What is the significance of the imagery? What does it tell us about the story?
Form—The structure of the work as a whole
Tone—the feeling of the work that you perceive through the words
One helpful way to conceive of this paper is to look for patterns in the stories—look for things that stand out, and that make strong points about the work as a whole.  Make a strong thesis statement, and do not shy away from speaking your truth. Develop a sense of passion about your own topic; become a true expert on one aspect of the story; show your reader how carefully you can think about words.
    You will need:
    1)      An effective introduction with a powerful thesis statement
    2)       Textual evidence to support your thesis with correct MLA formatting
    3)      Transitions between paragraphs and ideas
    4)      An effective conclusion
    5) An MLA Works Cited with MLA parenthetical citations
THE STORY CHOSEN IS: THE LOVE OF MY LIFE
    NOT NO NAME WOMAN
