Essay 2 Prompt
Prompt: Write a 1,200 word essay on ONE of the short stories that we have read for class:
“The Cask of Amontillado” pgs. 81-87
“Recaitatif” pgs. 101-115
“The Lesson” pg 248-253
“Volar”, pg. 145-146
Your essay should focus on only ONE of following literary elements:
Chapter 2 “Plot” pgs. 48-55
Ch. 3: Narration and Point of View pgs. 77-80
Ch. 4: “Characters” pgs. 94-101
Ch. 5: “Setting” pgs. 122-125
Ch. 6 “Symbolism & Figurative Language, pgs. 147-151
Ch. 7: “Theme” pgs. 184-188
Your thesis statement should reflect what you will be arguing about in your essay. It should be specific and narrow in focus and clearly tell the reader the purpose of your essay. Make sure your thesis includes the theme you will discuss in the short story as well as the literary element.
You should use specific textual references and provide commentary and analysis of the ideas you present in support of your thesis argument.
You will NOT use outside sources for this paper.
****Be careful to avoid plot summary. Assume the reader has read the story, so you do not need to summarize story points.
Do set up your quotes with a brief phrase that sets up the context of the quote.
Do provide insightful analysis as to how the author expresses his ideas through one of the elements of fiction listed above.
Minimum Criteria (to earn a C or higher): (Essay worth 150 points)
Minimum word count: 1,200 words – essays not meeting the word count will automatically receive a D or lower.
Thesis statement. This should be a statement that clearly offers some argument regarding specifically what you will address (character, symbolism, setting, etc.). Your thesis should come at the end of the introductory paragraph. Make sure you include the theme and literary element that you will use to argue your ideas about this short story. DO NOT ANNOUNCE: “In this essay I will…”
Don’t go beyond the short story to discuss the topic ideas in general or to make an application as to how the reader should apply the ideas. Keep your focus on the short story ideas only. To help you to stay focused on the author’s argument, avoid phrases or words such as “the reader…” or “you, we”, etc.
Well organized argument with . . .
Clear and logical paragraphing. This includes how the ideas are divided into paragraphs, the order of the ideas, the correct use of topic sentences and transitions. Each paragraph should focus on just one idea, and the line of thought should be easy for a reader to follow.
Clearly focused topic sentences that are argumentative, clearly identify the main point of the paragraph, and in some way argue the thesis.
Note: Don’t use a quote for a topic sentence; your topic sentence should clearly connect to the thesis idea in some way.
Supporting quotes from the story. Make sure to use 2-3 direct quotes per paragraph to help you stay focused on analysis of the theme and literary elements. In other words, why does the author use that particular idea/literary element to argue the theme? Make sure to read through the announcement boards for additional help.
Error Free sentences. At this stage in your writing, your sentences should be free from errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Make sure you leave enough time to proofread for typos as well.
Correct MLA in-text citation & document formatting – Note: This paper does not require outside research, so you do not need a works cited page.

“The Complexities of Identity: A Thematic Analysis of Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel”
Paper 2: Thematic Threads
With poetry, we discussed the issue of theme and worked with the tricky concept of
understanding what a poem means. In longer fiction, we are able to engage with fleshed-out
characters who live their lives and make their own decisions. We’ve met a number of people, but
do we really know them? Is it possible to make a judgment about a person who only exists in our
imaginations?
In 5 pages, focus your analytical eye on applying a theme to a character. Choose a character
from one of the three longform texts we’ve read (Ms Marvel) and
present a close reading which illustrates the way you feel s/he ought to be read. As before, this is
a thesis-driven assignment. Make a clear statement and support yourself with evidence from the
text. As was the case with Paper 1, it is expected that this paper will contain no outside sources.
Your argument will be entirely your own, rather than a summary of another scholar’s analysis.
While preparing the subject of your analysis, you may want to consider the questions you’ve
already been asking. If we want to make a statement about Kamala’s relationship with her
religion, which passages illustrate that statement? Where should we look to find a motive for
Colonel Joll’s behavior? What sections will help us explain Rachel’s motivations? Dig into the
language and tell us why we should agree with your assessment.
Remember to parse your source text for everything it has to offer. Relate your interpretation of
the source material, and be sure to think critically about the needs of people who disagree with
yourself as well. A strong thesis can be argued against.

“Contrasting Heroes: A Comparative Analysis of Hector and Achilles in Homer’s The Iliad”
In Homer’s epic poem, The Iliad, two central characters, Hector and Achilles, stand as contrasting heroic figures. This essay prompts you to explore and analyze the similarities and differences between Hector and Achilles, considering their strengths, weaknesses, character development, motivations, and the impact they have on the narrative. Your paper should be 3-4 pages in MLA Style and a separate Works Cited page. Cite at least ONE scholarly source to support your views. DO NOT REFERENCE OUTSIDE SOURCES (Google, Wikipedia, student guides, encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc.). DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. Plagiarism results in an “F” on the paper, and the paper and it cannot be re-done. A second instance of plagiarism results in automatic failure of the course. Per standard composition format: 1. Create your own title for your paper. Capitalize the first letter of all main words in your essay title. Do not title your essay “Much Ado About Nothing” or “Research Essay.” 2. Indent paragraphs. 3. Spell the author’s name correctly (William Shakespeare). 4. Use the author’s surname (last name) after mentioning him by full name: Shakespeare. Essay Structure: 1. All writing must be double-spaced (not 2.5), with 12 pt. font (not 14). 2. MLA formatted heading. 3. A title for your essay, centered. 4. Clear opening paragraph with thesis statement and signal phrase (mentioning full name of author and title of text). 5. Clear topic sentences. 6. Quotations (properly introduced and cited). Do not use long quotes. Keep the similarity rating to a maximum of 20%. If it exceeds that, try shortening a few quotes and paraphrasing more. 7. Transitional phrases to move from paragraph to paragraph. 8. Vary your diction (word choice) so that your sentences don’t all begin the same way. 9. Do NOT use ANY dictionary or encyclopedia definitions in your writing–do not write: “The dictionary defines___ as…” or “Webster’s Dictionary defines___ as….” 10. A clear conclusion. Additional Notes on Grammar: 1. You must proofread for sentence structure (sentence fragments, run-ons, comma splices, subject/verb agreement errors, spelling errors, etc.). I uploaded grammar guides to the Moodle Room, and you can also use NetTutor to help you proofread. Or, you can use The Learning Center for tutoring (in-person, on campus or virtual). In addition, use the ETS rater–it will help, but it does not find all errors. It is your responsibility to upload the strongest paper you can. 2. You must use proper punctuation (periods, commas, quotation marks, semicolons, apostrophes, etc.). 3. You must use proper capitalization of words. 4. Again, you must focus on format AND content. 5. Again, please proofread before uploading your work. PLEASE NOTE: Simply re-wording summaries or analysis from another source, or changing specific nouns, adjectives, adverbs, etc., constitutes plagiarism—your work must consist of YOUR OWN THOUGHTS AND WRITING—please don’t fail this course because of plagiarism. Make sure that you use quotation marks and that you give proper credit to the source if you are paraphrasing. When you have completed the assignment, save a copy in an easily accessible place and upload a copy (Word document or PDF ONLY–do not use Google Docs or Google Drive) through Moodle.
