  • The Ever-Changing Labels of Society: How Shifting Definitions Affect Individuals and Their Lives

Essay #3—on Theme #3: Government and Society
    Directions for the essay:
Fraser’s essay “The Inner Corset” explores the changing definition of what it means to be beautiful. The pieces about gender in the classroom define “feminization of the classroom.” Think of another term that is used to describe or label individuals—a term whose definition has changed over the last century. Write an essay in which you explore how the changing definition has affected the way individuals think about themselves and others, as well as how they live their lives. For example, you might consider the changing definitions of terms such as educated, successful, middle-class, or well-traveled.
Please, no slang or derogatory terms. When in doubt, check with me first.
You may want to refer to one of the readings in your own essay (though not required), and if you do, be sure to cite when you use an idea which isn’t your own. Again, see MLA format in your text or look up the basics on OWL at Purdue’s writing lab.
Government and Society is a broad theme that parallels well with the cause and effect rhetorical strategy.  This theme can be used as a backdrop to more specific discussions on education, the environment, the economy, health care, peace and war, and social class (to name a few). A study of this theme prompts us to focus on the changing world: evolving societal and political, and economic trends and whether our current status (nationally, globally, etc.) today is better or worse than that of previous generations. Of course, there are ties here to the other themes—the Human Condition, Technology and Communication, and it will also lend itself well to discussions on the next theme, Ethics and Morality.

  • “Exploring the Text: A Critical Analysis of [Text Title] from Various Perspectives”

Ways to Proceed: You may examine the text from the author’s point of view (biography), from a historical standpoint, from a cultural/sociological perspective, or from any other critical position that strikes your fancy.  The main point is that you must have a critical framework from which you examine the text.  Furthermore, where there is a clear-cut opposition to your perspective, you must attempt to refute opposing arguments to your point of view.  Other than that, you are only limited in this assignment by the text that has been chose for you (you must necessarily examine the text on which your paper centers—this is a text-driven assignment), and by your own imagination.
Criteria for Evaluation: Your paper should be typed, double-spaced, one-inch margins (top, bottom, left, right), twelve point font (Courier, Arial, Times New Roman, Antique Olive, Bookman Old Style).  Your essay should be between approximately FIVE to SEVEN (5-7) pages in length, including your Works Cited page.  You will need to have a minimum of TWO (2) secondary sources for this paper.  Proper MLA citation and documentation—including parenthetical citations in the text of the paper and a “Works Cited” page is an absolute necessity for this paper.

  • “Exploring the Concept of Love: Lessons from The Art of Loving and Crazy Rich Asians”

I have attached pictures of more in depth instructions for the essay, but here are some additional details. Write a letter to a family member about the things I’ve learned in this class in terms of the concept of love. For reference some of the material we have read in class is class is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (ISBN 978-039-396458-5), How To Practice by His Holiness the Dalai Lama (ISBN 978-0-7434-5336-3) and the main one which this essay will be based on is The Art of Loving by Erich Fromm (ISBN 978-0-06-112973-5). Discuss some key concepts about love that was mentioned in The Art of Loving, and connect it to the film “Crazy Rich Asians” Apply these concepts and make connections to the plot, characters, or specific themes. Use 5 quotes from the film (crazy rich asians), and 5 quotes from The Art of Loving.

  • “Finding Meaning in Adversity: A Reflection on Life’s Transformative Moments”

Directions for the essay:  Describe a specific scene, event, or ritual that imparts special meaning—something that may have taken place during childhood, perhaps—a life-changing situation or occurrence. You should have read the assigned essays (and also the student sample essays in both the Description and Narration chapters) for ideas on how these authors compose their works (they too, are writing about this same topic, in a way). Here’s an example: one might write an essay discussing how a child living in a comfortable setting may never understand the true meaning of success because perhaps he or she has never truly had to work for it. Another example might be discussing how a negative situation (death of a loved one, an illness, etc.) brings about positive results (or vice versa—a positive situation that brings negative results!).
Please feel free to run ideas by me.
You do not have to cite these (or any) required readings/ essays, but if you decide to do so, be sure to include the author’s name within that sentence (as in “According to Hughes…”) or use a parenthetical citation after the sentence you have paraphrased or quoted, like the one at the end of this sentence (Hughes 152). Just be sure to give credit where it is due when quoting a writer’s work.  See MLA format in your text or look up the basics on OWL at Purdue’s writing lab. Finally, consider the theme as you write:
The Human Condition: What does it mean to be human, and how does one fit into a particular culture, race, gender, or class? How are people related by their experiences and how do individuals search for and find meaning in their existence? Studying such a theme employs a humanities-based approach to thinking, engaging philosophical, psychological, and sociological ideas, among others. Many essays involve writers’ personal experiences and significant events which have helped them answer some of their own questions about life; such essays may aid readers in questioning, rethinking, and/or changing their own outlooks.
ALL ESSAYS MUST BE THREE TO FOUR PAGES IN LENGTH! SEE ESSAY THEMES/ TOPICS HANDOUT for particulars on how to format your essay and what NOT to include…
