  • Title: Responding to “The Effects of Social Media on Mental Health”

Write a 3-4 page essay summarizing and responding to a single source.  Your essay should be written in MLA format (double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt. font, 1 inch margins).
Class-specific Skills Assessed: Critical Reading, Summarizing, Organization, Quoting, and Formatting Response writing calls for you to express the content of the article you’ve read in your own words and then provide your own perspective on that article (not that entire issue). In other words, I am looking for you to stay close to the source text and include specific points with which you agree or disagree. Each paragraph you write should have some reference to the article, whether you’re quoting or paraphrasing.
You do not necessarily need to agree or disagree with everything the author says in order to argue effectively. It is perfectly acceptable to have a fair amount of common ground along with some new perspective of your own. No matter which approach you choose, you will write as if you’re communicating with an audience that has not read the article that you’re responding to. You’ll need to explain what is contained in the original piece and why it is important that you respond to it; then you can develop your own opinions while making specific references to the article.
    Developing Your Essay
You should develop your essay as described here. An essay with the following structure will work very well for this assignment:
An introduction that includes a thesis statement.
A summary of the article you’ve chosen.
Your own reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with the author. This section should be the most substantial part of the essay and should be several paragraphs. I recommend using each paragraph to focus on a given quote or idea from the article.
A conclusion that rephrases the thesis statement.
A works cited entry. Since we have not covered these yet, I have created them for you and posted them on Canvas. Cut and paste the relevant entry into your document. Your Works Cited page does not count towards the paper’s length requirement.
Remember, you are to imagine that you are writing for an audience that has not read the article you’ve chosen, so you will need to be especially careful with the summary.  Use the strategies you’ve already learned to craft your summary of the article without plagiarizing, meaning that your summary must include the author’s name and the title of the work, and any borrowed language must be marked with quotation marks.

  • “Exploring Professional Magazines: A Report on an Article in the Field” Title: “Exploring Databases: A Lesson Plan for Researching and Citing Sources”

    Professional Magazine Report
    Due Jun 11 by 11:59pm
    Points 20
    Submitting a file upload
    Important terminology to understand first:
-Popular Magazines=like Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Cosmo, Men’s Health; are written for general audiences. They offer relatively short articles that provide general coverage of topics. Articles are written by journalists.
-Professional Magazines= magazines whose target audience are people who work in a particular profession, trade, or industry. They can usually be accessed by subscription only, but some have free issues offered online. Topics may include current issues, events, and trends in that particular field.  Professional magazines often contain regular columns of news and commentary, and sometimes “how to” articles, and valuable, practical advice for practitioners in a given area. Articles are usually written by specialists in the field.
For your first paper, I would like you to select an article that interests you from a professional magazine in your field, then provide a short report and discussion of it.
    ORGANIZATION
Introduction: Start off by introducing the article: Name of article, author, what magazine it appeared in, publication date, and who the target audience is for this magazine. Then provide a summary/describe what the article was about in your own words (but do cite if you include any specific information from the article).
Body: In the body, discuss what all you learned from the article? How such knowledge might be beneficial to you in your future career? Why this article was of particular interest to you?
I would also like to hear: if you were going to teach a lesson about this subject matter to a class of students in your same major/field, how might you set up the lesson? Consider various methods of instruction: lecture, handouts, video, group work, student presentations, assignments like papers and tests, etc. Detail what all you would include, in what order you would present information, etc.
Here is an example. A nursing student read an article about the growing number of nonsmokers being diagnosed with lung cancer. The purpose of the article was to encourage nurses to be aware of this increase and take note of patients who may seem to have some of the obvious symptoms of lung cancer but are often dismissed by care providers because they have never smoked. Her lesson plan included a 10-minute lecture of the recent research findings about lung cancer. Then showing a YouTube video she found about the early signs of lung cancer to educate nurses. Then more lecture on best questions to ask patients to assess their risk factors, and finally, role playing to practice how they might discuss this issue with their patients. The last part of the lesson included an assignment in which students were asked to find an article written in the last 10 years about lung cancer diagnoses in nonsmokers and present it to the class.
Conclusion: For the conclusion, I would like you to look for articles in KCC’s library databases that have to do with the same or a similar topic. Report on just one of these articles, first introducing it with its name, author, and what periodical it originally appeared in, then explaining what that article included that either expanded your understanding of the issue or simply addressed different aspects of it. Provide one or two quotes from the article.
MLA Documentation Style: When you refer to specific information from either article in the form of paraphrase or quote, you need to cite that information in the paper itself (and provide a Works Cited page).
Length: 2 pages  Sources: 2 (main article and one cited in the conclusion)

  • Exploring Developmental Stages Through Photovoice “Paraphrasing and Avoiding AI: Tips and Tricks”

    Exploratory photo project
Due by Wednesday, June 12, at 11:59 pm
PLEASE NOTE: Since you have a shorter turn-around time between this and your last assignment, I will allow a two-day grace period for the final if you need it. Please plan to get it in no later than Friday, June 14, at 11:59pm.
    Background
Photovoice is a qualitative research method grounded in feminist theory and used to gather information from study participants using photography as a tool to actively convey concerns and strengths of the individual and community (Wang & Burris, 1997). This technique has been adapted to classroom projects as a way for instructors to value student experience and knowledge and for students to be more active in demonstrating their insights and understanding of a topic (MacPherson, et al., 2022; Robinson-Keilig, et al., 2014).
For your final, you are asked to use Photovoice to illustrate your understanding of concepts that you have learned through the course.
    Instructions
Choose theories or cognitive experiences or physical experiencesfrom 6 different developmental stages that you have learned about through the class.
Each concept should relate to a different age or stage of life. For example, if you use a theory or experience about adolescence, the others should not be about issues related to the teen years.
If you need to refresh your memory on what we have covered, please review your notes, the readings, and/or the videos and podcasts from each week.
Take photos to illustrate these theories or experiences. These should be original photos that you take and NOT from the internet.
You will submit 6 photos as part of your final project, one for each theory/experience.
If your photos have identifiable people in them, then you must obtain consent. Please use this form and include it with your presentation. If people are not identifiable because their back is to the camera or they are in the background, then you do not need to get consent.
If you do not have access to a camera, please let me know as soon as possible so that we can talk about alternatives.
Please note that as a GCC employee, I am a mandated child abuse reporter so if there are images that reflect child abuse, I am required to make a report to the Los Angeles County Department of Child and Family Services, as well as the police.
Display. Create a PowerPoint/Google presentation with one photo on each slide. Your presentation should include:
A title page with a title for your project and your name.
6 photo slides. Each slide should have the following on it:
    Title for the photo
    Photo
A caption that includes the title of the photo as well as the date and time it was taken.
Reflective writing (see step 4 below).
Consent forms can be added as extra slides at the end or submitted separately.
Reflective writing. Tell me how this photo illustrates a theory or cognitive or physical experience that occurs during the developmental stage by answering the following questions in 2-3 paragraphs.
What is happening in the photo or what does it show?
What developmental stage or time of life is represented?
What theory or change is being illustrated? Please explain what it is, in your own words with no copy/pasting, quotations, or AI.
How does that theory or experience impact the lives of people in that stage of life?
Please only use the information in the textbook. And while you do not need to provide citations for the textbook, you must still use your own words.
Share. An important component of PhotoVoice projects is sharing it with others in the community. Please choose one of your photos to share on this Class Gallery.
Upload one photo to the gallery and include the title, developmental stage, and theory/experience for the photo, as well as your name to receive credit.
This Gallery will not be shared outside of the class.
    Formatting
Please only use the information in the textbook. And while you do not need to provide citations for the textbook, you must still use your own words. No quotations and no AI.
Need help remembering how to paraphrase? Please refer back to this page to rewatch the videos.
Please use whatever language or grammar is most comfortable for you. If you use a language other than English, please also provide a translation.

  • “The Interconnectedness of Dorian and the Painting in The Picture of Dorian Gray: A Study of Cause and Effect Relationships”

Focus on the connections and cause-effect relationships you perceive between Dorian and the painting of him by Basil Hallward, as described throughout The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (1891). In a carefully considered and meticulously prepared essay, derive a thesis that shows your interpretation of the meaning of the painting.
The essay is to address two questions as deeply and efficiently as possible:
How do you account for the descriptions of changes in the painting–with a supernatural, scientific, psychological, or other explanation?
How do you interpret Dorian’s changes through the course of the novel–are they integrally related to the descriptions of changes in the painting, or are they independent of them?
Organization Options. In each organizational format, be sure to address Dorian, the Painting, and the Basis and Meaning of the Changes that are described throughout the whole novel, selecting examples carefully to account for both coverage and depth.
Point-by-Point. You decide the order as well as the points; these are suggestions.
    Painting.
All instances covered with brief references and citations; selected instances described in more depth.
    Dorian.
Coverage and depth to show causes and effects through the novel.
    Basis and Meaning.
Evidence of supernatural or natural explanations of the causes and effects after the wish is made.

    Dorian.
    Painting.
    Basis and Meaning.
    [continue with Ch. 18-20]
    Requirements and Guidelines:
The 1891 version of the novel is your only source for this essay. Online version of the novel: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/174/174-h/174-h.htmLinks to an external site.
Make your planning and preparation as efficient as possible, starting with careful reading of the novel and effective notes, both in the novel and in the Class Notes, to assist the retrieval of examples as you need them. Work systematically on each step of the essay process.
As mentioned above, provide for two fundamental aspects of the essay’s development, which together make the essay as efficient and effective as possible in a relatively short space:
    Coverage of the novel, which you accomplish through many very brief references to it with multiple citations;
Depth of selected representative examples from the novel, showing trains of thought and some key passages from it to give a clear idea of the thesis at key points in the novel’s progress.

  • “The Journey of the Oklahoma Cowboy: A Visual Narrative of Politics and History” Introduction The artwork that I have chosen to analyze for this assignment is the statue of the Oklahoma Cowboy, located in the Cowboy and Western Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.

Art of the Non-Western World (Humanities). I picked this statue because I have lived in Oklahoma for over 30+ years and this work of art is the epitome of Oklahoma history. Politics and history has come a long way, and this is the overall grueling journey. I will take care of the photos this week, I have attached a copy of the statue that rests in the Oklahoma Cowboy and Western Hall of Fame.
    Prepare
Find a work of art in your community.
It need not be a non-Western image, but it can be from any time period or culture.
You should select only one work of art.
If you are not certain which work of art to select, you may submit photos of your options to your instructor for approval before you begin your paper.
Take a photograph of the work. If the work is a three-dimensional object, take pictures of all the sides you can access.
Take a selfie of yourself with the work.
Copy down the complete identification information on your chosen work. This includes:
    Title
    Artist’s name
    Date it was created
    Scale (size and shape)
Medium (material it is made from)
Location (It can be in a gallery, or outdoors, or in a museum, or even an original hanging in a business).
    Prompt
Analyze your chosen work of art based on the information presented in your textbook and outlined below.
Consider how and why the work was created.
Aspects to be considered (these are not listed in a particular order):
Color: Describe the color and explain how it affects the mood of the work and how it is used to organize the composition.
Composition: What is the subject or narrative? How is the work organized and unified? How do your eyes move around the work, and what do you focus on?
Objects: what is in the work? Is it crowded or empty? Is it naturalistic or abstract and to what degree?
Size and shape: horizontal or vertical? Large or small?
Technique: the manner and ability with which the work was created. This would be the brush strokes and paint of a painting, or the material of a sculpture and how it is manipulated and moved.
Style: the distinctive manner in which the work was created and the category into which the work falls. Some examples of styles are expressionist, surrealist, pop art, realism, and abstract.
    Procedure
    Write a 5-page paper (roughly 1250 words).
Include an APA-formatted title page and reference page.
    Include:
    An introduction
A paragraph about each of the aspects listed above
A conclusion that discusses how the creative process is revealed in your selected work
When you submit your assignment, please remember to upload all the images of the artwork and your selfie along with the document.
If you can, paste your images at the end of your essay, which should be a Word Document.
    Do not send a PDF.
