“The Pursuit of Eudaimonia: A Comparison of Orwell’s “Shooting an Elephant” and Hurston’s “How it Feels to Be Colored Me””
Compare and contrast two of the works listed in the directions. For this I have considered possibly using George Orwell’s “Shooting an Elephant” and Zora Neale Hurston’s “How it Feels to Be Colored Me”. Including in the directions, answering this question specifically: Which narrator experiences greater eudaimonia
(there’s that word again – remember, the word means “spiritual well-being”
and is translated as “happiness” often)?
So, which narrator experiences greater happiness? Alternatively, you could answer which
narrator experiences greater suffering, depending on how you want to approach
the topic. -
“The Impact of Helicopter Parenting on Parent-Child Relationships”
I’ve attached the topic and link to the relating article.

Important terminology to understand before reading this assignment:
-Professional Magazines= magazines whose target audience are people who work in a particular profession, trade, or industry. They can usually be accessed by subscription only, but some have free issues offered online. Topics may include current issues, events, and trends in that particular field. Professional magazines often contain regular columns of news and commentary, and sometimes “how to” articles, and valuable, practical advice for practitioners in a given area. Articles are usually written by specialists in the field.
-Professional Magazine article=one single article from a prof magazine.
-Academic Journal=an academic publication written for professionals in a particular field of study. Include more sophisticated, in depth coverage of topics (articles can be up to 50 pages). Authors are professionals, with some of the highest credentials in their fields. Articles go through a rigorous review process by experts in the field before they are selected for publication. Typically come out monthly, have volume and issue numbers.
-Journal article=one single article from a journal.
________________________________________________________________
Overview
This assignment will expose you to two types of professional sources in your field. You will research and make observations about the similarities and differences between professional magazines and academic journals. To do so, you will first have to find an academic journal in your field; since you already found a professional magazine for our first assignment, you already have that. You can access some journals online and also through KCC databases.
You must read 3 articles from the professional magazine and 3 from the academic journal before making your observations. Then, you will develop a claim regarding the similarities and the differences and ultimately write your paper to defend this claim using support from all of these articles.
Specifics (*Include the headings below when you write the paper)
I. Introduction: Introduce both the mag and journal (their titles go in italics) and state who the target audience is of each (you can research this; remember, it won’t be the general public. These are written for professionals in certain fields.) There is no need to name all of the articles you will be using in the paper at this time. End with your claim about the similarities and/or differences in the conventions.
For example: While both the English Teaching Professional magazine and College English journal are written for English instructors, it’s fairly evident that College English targets college professors based on the content, extensive research, and formality whereas, English Teaching Professional targets high school and college instructors who want practical advice on teaching.
II. The Professional Magazine: Open this paragraph by sharing your overall impression of the magazine: what kinds of information is included in it and who specifically would be interested in, and benefit from, this information? Also, provide the titles of the 3 articles you reviewed. Article titles should be in quotations marks and capitalize all major words in the title.
Also, discuss the following: (NOTE: you don’t need to answer the following questions separately for each article. Instead, skim your 3 articles and base your answers on all 3):
-The credentials/backgrounds of the authors of the articles, if provided.
-The average length of the articles
-Types of sources cited. Name some specific ones.
-Any visuals included like graphs, charts, or images? Describe some specific ones.
-How are the articles organized? Any section headings, for example?
-Tone of the writing (formal, informal).
-Provide some examples of any jargon used (terminology used in this profession).
-Any other observations.
III. The Academic Journal: Open this paragraph by sharing your overall impression of the journal: what kinds of information is included in it and who specifically would be interested in, and benefit from, this information? Also, provide the titles of the 3 articles you reviewed. Article titles should be in quotations marks and capitalize all major words in the title.
Also, discuss the following: (again, you don’t need to answer the following questions separately for each article)
-The credentials/backgrounds of the authors of the articles, should be provided.
-The average length of the articles (should be quite long…if not, you might not be looking at a journal)?
-Types of sources cited. Name some specific ones.
-Any visuals included like graphs, charts, or images?
-How are the articles organized? Any section headings, for example?
-Tone of the writing (formal, informal)?
-Provide some examples of any jargon used (terminology used in this profession).
IV. Conclusion: Discuss your personal impression of these publications. As a future professional in this field, do you find either/both interesting? Helpful? Educational? If you were asked to contribute an article to one of them, what would you like to write about, AND in what way would that topic fit in with the purpose/content of the publication. Be as specific as possible.
Length: at least 3 pages plus a Works Cited of your 6 articles.

Title: The Dangers of Allowing Children on Social Media: Failing to Think What We Are Doing in 2024
Topic I chose: Children should not be allowed on social media
(Kids should not be on social media, as it inhibits a child’s ability to develop a healthy sense of identity and sense of self. )
TASK
Write an argumentative research paper in which you identify an example of failing to “think what we are doing” in 2024. Indicate the specific ways in which your chosen topic poses potential dangers and illustrate with evidence from your research. Consider counterargument along the way, acknowledging why some people don’t recognize the dangers you are pointing to. Finally, indicate a way forward: what do you think we should do about this issue?
Introduction
Start by introducing your topic in general terms. Briefly describe how it started and where it stands today. Indicate the major stakeholders involved in the issue. Finish with a thesis statement in which you claim that your topic represents a lack of thinking what we are doing and indicate, briefly, why. Finally, give a brief statement of what you think we should do about this issue.
Body
Develop your essay with multiple argumentative body paragraphs. Each body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that is either a claim (one reason in support of your argument) or a statement of counterargument (one reason others disagree). Topic sentences should be followed by evidence/support drawn from your research and your own reasoning. Argumentative paragraphs should include paraphrase/quotation from appropriate sources in support of the topic sentence claim. Counterargument paragraphs should include evidence or reasoning that refutes or concedes the counterargument claim.
As a whole, the body of your essay should support your thesis (that your chosen topic represents a lack of thinking what we are doing), both by presenting evidence for your claims and by presenting and refuting counterargument.
Conclusion
Your conclusion should briefly summarize your argument, highlighting major points, and close with a “call to action”: what should your readers do now that you have alerted them to this problem?

Title: Finding My Voice
Please post your rough draft of your Memoir here. Your rough draft should be attached to your post as either a Microsoft Word document or as a PDF.
This draft should be a complete draft (1200-1500 words) to ensure that you will as much valuable feedback as possible from your classmates. Keep in mind that I will not be commenting on your drafts. Instead this is your opportunity to share your ideas, strategies, and content with one another in an effort to not only write better essays, but also to help build a sense of community in our classroom.
If you have specific questions about your rough draft, or if you need help with a certain section of your essay, please let me know via email or schedule a conference. I am happy to help! Instructions: There are several ways to focus your memoir. You can choose to focus on a memory, a person, an event, a time of transition, or anything else that appeals to you. But this memoir should be more of a snapshot than a life story. I don’t want to know about everything that has ever happened to you up to this point. I want you to choose some piece of your life that is meaningful and write about it in great detail and description. Remember that no matter how you frame your memoir, you should be the main character in this essay.
Using the pieces by Gay, Cisneros, and Shteyngart linked to in our course text as models, draw on personal or community/family memories and artifacts to recreate a specific time, moment, and place through narration and description. Be sure to incorporate a conflict and resolution as well as a bottom line to your essay—a lesson learned or a moral to your story.
That being said, I encourage you to think of topics that are linked to current events in our country and your experience with them. You may wish to use this as an opportunity to reflect on your experiences and create a narrative about topics like:
COVID-19/Quarantine
Police brutality
The Black Lives Matter movement
Recent protests related to social justice and systemic racism
The Supreme Court’s ruling on DACA
The Supreme Court’s ruling to protect LGBTQ+ employees
You do not have to choose one of these topics—your memoir topic can be on just about any topic you wish as long as it is appropriate for the classroom (remember this will be shared with and reviewed by your peers). I have had many students write successful memoirs about childhood memories, their first day of college, moving into the dorms, a study abroad experience, or other memorable times with friends and family. Just remember that your memoir must have a plot, characters, conflict, and theme. It must also contain rich descriptive paragraphs and a clear lesson learned. Why was this such an important part of your life?
In your memoir, you are expected to:
Choose a topic that is appropriate for academic memoir writing (remember that you will be sharing this with the entire class)
Create a clear and cohesive plot with characters and a conflict that is overcome by your main character (you!)
Use sharp details and vivid description (use all five senses when possible)
Use Gay’s, Cisneros’, or Shteyngart’s pieces as a lens through which to write your own memoir
Use your memoir to demonstrate a good understanding of this new writing situation
Avoid clichés and stilted sentence structures and phrasing
Use proper grammar, proofread closely, and polish your writing
Create a strong, cohesive, and clear piece of writing
Incorporate a lesson learned or moral to your story (theme)
Other Guidelines:
Your memoir should be 1250-1500 words long (not including the title page or references page)
It should be in Times New Roman, 12-point font, double spaced
Please use APA or MLA formatting guidelines for your memoir
If you use outside sources in your memoir, please use in-text citations and a reference or works cited page. However, no references are required. -
“Designing My Path: A Reflection on My Chosen Pathways and their Alignment with My Personal/Professional Goals” Designing My Path: A Reflection on My Chosen Pathways and their Alignment with My Personal/Professional Goals In my previous
For this assignment, you’ll be referring back to Design Your Path Parts 1 & 2 and writing a culminating paper – don’t worry it’s not a terribly long one. Don’t forget to name the file as outlined in the syllabus, and be sure you include a header in your document.
Step 1: Download the template provided for this assignment. You must use this template.
Step 2: Write a 500-word paper identifying the two pathways you have chosen to follow. Discuss why you chose these pathways and how the Student Learning Outcomes align with your personal/professional goal(s). If you do not discuss the SLOs, you will lose points.
Step 3: Refer to the feedback I provided for Design Your Path Parts 1 & 2. You should incorporate that feedback into Step 4.
Step 4: Fill in Area F/Field of Study and the Area G pathways in the template. Don’t forget to identify your two pathways! You’ve already selected your Area G Pathway courses (you may need to make some tweaks based on my previous feedback). Area F/Field of Study is where the prerequisites you (or I) previously identified come into play. You’ll want to strategically place prerequisites needed for your pathway courses in Area F/Field of Study. I strongly encourage you to consult Area F/Field of Study in DegreeWorks. Many of you have at least one or two classes listed in Area F/Field of Study already, and some of you may have it fully completed.
Note: do NOT include ITDS 2799, ITDS 2791, ITDS 2792, ITDS 2793, ITDS 3099, ITDS 4799, ITDS 4791, or ITDS 4792 in Area F/Field of Study or in your pathways. Those are already required courses that you take in addition to the 15 credits in Area F/Field of Study and two Area G pathways (18 credits each).
Grading Breakdown:
Essay – 75 points
Area F – 25 points
Pathway 1 – 25 points
Pathway 2 – 25 points I
