  • “The Power of Rhetoric: Analyzing the Effectiveness of American Indian Activist Strategies in the 1960s and 1970s”

For this project, you will have read “The Rhetoric of American Indian Activism in the 1960s and 1970s” by John Sanchez and Mary E. Stuckey (the “Lens” text), as well as the “Alcatraz Proclamation” and “The Letter” written by the collective activist group “Indians of all Tribes,” with Adam Fortunate Eagle being the primary author.  The second section of the “Lens” text focuses on the four specific audiences which activists had to engage and the rhetorical devices used to address those respective audiences – these are the primary “tools” you will use in your analysis, although the entirety of the “lens” text is there to help you, contextually.
You will use “The Rhetoric” text as a lens on “The Proclamation” and “The Letter,” exploring how the specific rhetorical moves discussed in the “lens” text are implemented in the target texts. You will pick at least one example from each of the target texts and describe how it works, why it may have been used, and possible effects on the audience.  You need to use a total of three examples, but you must analyze BOTH target texts.
Ultimately, you need to determine how effective the activists’ strategies were for the 4 main target audience.
Successful Papers will do the following:
Introduce the topic and the text on rhetoric (the “lens”). Briefly introduce the target texts, and describe what the paper will do (metadiscourse).
Analyze one element of context (audience being the most pertinent for this paper) from each of the target texts, using the “lens” text to provide you with the tools to conduct your analysis.  Using examples, discuss how the specific portion of the text you are examining works, why it may have been used in the context, and possible effects on the audience
Present a conclusion.  In other words, answer the question “So what, who cares?” What is significant about the work you did/things you learned in the course of writing this paper?
Implement proper stylistic conventions to include: sentence variation, college-level vocabulary, target audience, complex sentence structure.
Smoothly integrate supporting evidence (quotes) into the text.
Be cohesive, with a clear structure that uses effective transitions to hold together the discussion.
Include proper MLA documentation, with in-text citations and a Works Cited list at the end

Part 1: Cinderella (from Combine and Compose )
In Combine and Compose, you will see a sentence combining test on page 77. Do not complete the entire test. You are only responsible for completing #76-90 on page 85 and 86 in the text. For this portion of the assignment, combine using ANY method (sentence combining methods 1-11), making sure the method you choose is both logical and correct. There may be more than one correct method.
This test will assess how well you understood methods 1-11, and each question is worth 4 points.  Each sentence cluster will ask you to combine the sentences using the method it demands.
If you do not have access to the book, you can view the sentence clusters below:
Combine and Compose pg. 85, #76-79

    He asked them.
They wanted to try on the slipper.
78, He couldn’t even get in the door.
The one stepsister pushed the other out of the way and grabbed the slipper from the prince.
She crammed and jammed her big foot into the slipper. Her toes bled.
Combine and Compose pg. 86, #80-90
The other sister tried it on. It didn’t fit either.
Out of the corner of his eye, the prince spotted another young woman.
    She was sweeping the hearth.
    She looked at the slipper.
She saw it was made out of glass.
He asked her to try it on.
    He made the stepsisters angry.
Cinderella was both nervous and excited. Cinderella obliged the prince.
The slipper was a perfect fit.
It made the prince embrace his true love.
The stepsisters gasped in surprise. The Prince kissed his true love.
    He kissed Cinderella.
No longer would Cinderella be condemned to a horrible fate. It was a life of poverty and loneliness.
He picked her up in his arms. He lifted her atop his horse. His horse was a mighty steed.
Together the happy couple rode off.
They rode off towards the gleaming palace.
The couple was Cinderella and Prince Charming.

At this point, you’ve organized your ideas into an outline. Please review my notes on your outline in order to revise and assemble your paper. As a reminder, here is the formal assignment prompt: This literary criticism essay explores a common theme or motif in at least two works of literature. This essay explores its topic in greater depth than the previous short essays, and must use supporting sources. The criticism essay will be a more elaborate version of the short essays you’ve written in this course. In fact, you can use one of your short essays as a first draft. Choose at least two works of literature that we have studied in this course. Choose a common theme, topic, or motif in these two works. Your essay should explore the following:
Similarities and differences between how these works treat your theme, topic, or motif.
The significance of your theme, topic, or motif.
The main point you want to make about the theme, topic, or motif—in other words, an argumentative thesis statement.
Details from the literary works that support your thesis statement.
This essay should follow the basic introduction, body, conclusion structure learned in College Composition. Since this is a literary criticism essay, your analysis and argument should be rooted in a close reading of your literary sources. For this essay, you’ll also need to use supporting sources. In many cases, you’ll find that scholarly research has been done on your specific literary works. In other cases, you may look for research related to the genre, theme, or historical context of these works. You must have at least 5 sources. (This is a minimum number. There is no maximum number.) Your sources must include at least 2 works of literature that we have studied during this course. Your sources must also include at least 2 academic journal articles or academic nonfiction books. Your essay should be at least 1200 words long.

  • The Importance of Writing in Nursing: Exploring Different Forms and Examples

Our readings this week focused on how writing is a fundamental part of nursing and why good writing matters for nurses at different stages in their careers.
In “Writing in NursingLinks to an external site.,” Dr. Nancyruth Leibold includes a list of almost thirty different kinds of writing that nurses might produce in their careers. Read through this list and choose one kind of writing that interests you.
Next, spend some time researching this form of writing online:
Start by looking for general definitions, descriptions, and how-to articles that explain the basics of this kind of writing.
Continue by looking for nursing-specific information on this kind of writing, identifying how this kind of writing is produced in the field of nursing.
Locate a 1-2 nursing-specific examples of this kind of writing and spend some time looking them over.
Finally, choose one strong, nursing-specific example of the kind of writing you’ve researched and read it carefully.
Create a document that includes the following:
A general definition of the kind of writing you chose to research.
A description of how this kind of writing is used specifically in nursing. What purpose does it serve in nursing, and who is the most common target audience?
A link to your example and a summary that includes its purpose and main points.
Your own opinion or analysis of the writing in the example. For example, is the writing complex or simple? Concise or wordy? Vague or specific? Formal or conversational? Persuasive or descriptive? What else did you notice about this writing that you found noteworthy or interesting?
    Your document should:
Include your name, assignment title, and date at the top.
