Your paraphrase can be as long as the excerpt you have chosen, but should not duplicate any phrasing from the excerpt. If you must, you can quote up to three words in a phrase.

Choose to paraphrase ONE of the excerpts below taken from Enclyclopedia.com:
    Option 1
Morrison began writing Sula in 1969, a time of great activism among African Americans and others who were working toward equal civil rights and opportunities. The book addresses issues of racism, bigotry, and suppression of African Americans; it depicts the despair people feel when they can’t get decent jobs, and the determination of some to survive. Eva, for example, cuts off her leg in order to get money to raise her family. Morrison shows how, faced with racist situations, some people had to grovel to whites simply to get by, as Helene does on a train heading through the South. Others, however, fought back, as Sula does when she threatens some white boys who are harassing her and Nel.
    or
    Option 2
In 1993, Morrison was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, and thus became the first African American and only the eighth woman ever to win the award. According to Maureen O’Brien in Publishers Weekly, Morrison said, “What is most wonderful for me personally is to know that the Prize has at last been awarded to an African American. I thank God that my mother is alive to see this day.” In 1996, she received the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.
Your discussion post will be graded according to the following criteria:
80% – Clear paraphrase of the selected text in your own words
20% – Thoughtful response to a classmate’s post that comments on what was done well and what could be improved (at least 75 words)

  • “Water Management in Las Vegas: A Call to Action”

For this assignment, you will create an op-ed article on an important topic as well as an infographic that makes a similar argument in a visual medium. Your op-ed article and the infographic should be able to work independently of each other but convey the same main argument.
Your first step will be choosing a topic for your op-ed article. Make sure it bears some importance for your community and/or your professional path, whether it’s your chosen major, the discipline where you plan to go, or the job you are currently holding. Make sure your topic is not too broad (e.g., “climate change” is a very broad topic, but “water management in Las Vegas in the time of climate change” is a lot more manageable) and not overused, in which case it might be difficult to find anything original to add to the existing debates.
Define your audience and choose the venue for your op-ed piece: who are you trying to reach, and what would you like them to do as a result of reading your op-ed? Do you want people to take action or to change their opinion on the topic? Who are you trying to reach? Is it people who mostly share your views but might not be aware of some facts, or people who hold opposite opinions? What newspaper would you like to see your op-ed published in, and why? You can choose a major newspaper like The New York Times or a local paper. Your topic and your audience will largely define your arguments.
Consider different rhetorical strategies we’ve learned so far and look at examples of op-ed articles. Choose argumentative strategies best suited for your topic, your audience, and your goals. Do some research: how would you back up your arguments? What kind of evidence can you use?
Your op-ed should have an engaging and informative title.
The introductory paragraph should open with a “hook” to get your readers’ attention. You can cite a recent news story or a new scientific study, tell a personal story or a dramatic anecdote, use irony or show contradictions in public opinion, or reference popular culture. You can find some examples of op-ed openings here. Your introduction should also give a preview of your main claim.
The body of your article should develop your arguments in more detail and provide evidence for your claims.
The concluding paragraph should connect your claims and urge the readers to action.
Your infographic should reflect your main arguments, but do not try to include every claim or every detail. You can use free tools to create your infographic (e.g., piktochart, canva, or venngage).

    Background
A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, websites, etc.) that were consulted during the research process. A bibliography includes the bibliographic information (author, title, publisher, etc.) cited in MLA format. An annotation is a summary and evaluation of a source.
Therefore, an annotated bibliography is a bibliography of sources which includes a summary and evaluation of each source along with the citation.
    The Assignment
For this assignment, you will construct an annotated bibliography of the sources you plan to use for your research essay. After each citation, you will write an annotation. Your annotations should do the following:
Summarize: What type of source is this? Is it a primary or secondary source? What is the point of this text? What topics are covered? How would you describe this source to someone who is not familiar with it?
Evaluate: How does this source fit into your research? How does it help you shape your argument? How can you use this source in your research essay? Has it changed how you think about your topic?
    Assignment Requirements
Your annotated bibliography must include at least 5 sources. Your citations of these sources must adhere to MLA format.
Sources should be listed in alphabetical order according to the author’s last name.
Annotations should be 100-150 words each.
Unlike your regular Works Cited page (which is double-spaced), I would like you to single-space your annotated bibliography, with an extra line between each citation and annotation.
