Title: “Unlocking Potential: A Psychological Skills Training Program for George, a High School Basketball Athlete”
Throughout this course, students were introduced to sport psychology topics, including motivation, stress, anxiety, reinforcement, group dynamics, arousal regulation, imagery, etc. Students will address the following case study:
George is a sophomore high school basketball athlete and the leading scorer. He aspires of playing basketball in college at the Division I level. He is talented, but there are definite areas of improvement. After going to a showcase and talking to some Division I recruiters, it was expressed to him that there might be a possibility for him to play Division I, but that he would have to be a walk on. This information made George very frustrated. His self-confidence diminished and his performance was affected. Even though his coach explained to him that what the recruiters said was not bad news, he still feels as if he is not a strong athlete for the team. Not only has his shooting percentage decreased, but he is also not sleeping well, suffering with his grades in school and has nagging injuries. According to his coach, he has shifted from being the model athlete to a fragile athlete.
Each student will take on the role as a sport psychology professional and provide a PowerPoint presentation addressing their case study and the following:
-A needs assessment identifying the area of potential concern for the athlete(s)…what might be holding them back? What is challenging their success? Are there individual concerns, group concerns or both?
-Identify two psychological skills (learned from this course) that could be applied to this athlete(s) and why it could provide success if implemented correctly
-Develop a psychological skills training session for working effectively with this athlete(s). Incorporate the two skills you identified as being helpful in this case. -Address the performance skills, foundation skills, personal development skills and team skills you would implement with this program. -Share the objectives of the session, how you would implement the program, the program design, your approach for working with this athlete(s) and assessment of mental skills. Make sure to include an activity that would be beneficial. All ideas should be unique and original. Do not copy from the internet. If any outside sources are utilized for assistance there must be proper references included.
