In almost all the chapters of Rubenstein, J.M. (2015 and 2019), Contemporary Human Geography, New
York: Prentice-Hall, centrifugal and centripetal forces are inferred—either directly or indirectly—in
communities, cities, states, nations, countries, and world regions. The forces sometimes act in harmony
or disharmony against each other.
The essence of the exercise is to reinforce students’ understanding of Cultural Geography through a
creative writing assignment. There are no correct answers, per se.
Instructions: ✓ Briefly define the centrifugal and centripetal forces. (Note: Not as used in Physics!)
✓ Using concrete examples from the class textbook, lectures, current affairs and events, and the
Internet, discuss how the forces help us understand Cultural Geography across communities,
cities, states, nations, countries, and world regions.
✓ References cited/sources: Textbook, Websites, Journals, Newspapers, among others.

✓ Do not rush to finish so that you are done with the assignment! Take your time.
✓ Your essay should be about two pages (+ or – will not lose you points), typewritten (doublespaced, 12-point Times New Roman, with one-inch margins).
